NorthRaider Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 So what kinds of animals are we looking at for Battle Beasts? There's the croc for sure, judging from that TV commercial there's the bat thing (Man-Bat update! ), the lizard/dinosaur thing, the dragon thing (so many reptiles!), the shark thing, the elephant thing... Prolific and wacky-looking. Sounds like a good fit for a Minimate license. Hopefully it'll actually sell. Quote
pickle Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 I used to collect these when I was a kid. I hope they keep with the old school weapons with the minimate sets. Glad to see these coming back. Quote
luke314pi Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 I have a few dozen of these when I was a kid, and they were among my favorite toys. These were my three favorites: Quote
buttheadsmate Posted July 26, 2009 Author Posted July 26, 2009 (edited) Wow! Octillion Octopus,King Cobra & Nellie the Elephant ......er....Sledgehammer Elephant. Edited July 26, 2009 by buttheadsmate Quote
cesium salami Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 I was always uncomfortable rubbing that elephants faction sticker. My favorites were always "Rocky Rhino" and "Sly Fox". Although, as a kid, I never called them by their proper Battle Beasts name. I mean "Run Amok Duck"? (okay that one may be pretty awesome after all). The more I think about it though, it may not be likely that the fire/water/wood factions enter into DST's Battle Beasts. This part of it was something that Hasbro created, and probably remains their intelletual property. I could be wrong though, I'm no lawyer. Quote
Danny Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Battle Beasts on Wikipedia Pics of all the toys in order - I'm gonna bagsy Pirate Lion for my avatar alter ego! Yes I am number one! I do remember these, although they hit the UK just as I was starting to drift away from toys as an early teenager. I think it's a pretty good license to get for DST. It allows them to attempt to resurrect an 80s property properly by actually owning it. It's fairly obscure (it's no Thundercats!) but gives them a lot of room to do versions of the earlier toys plus new ones. And the property itself - 2" figures that are broadly the same basic bodies, sold in 2-packs? It's a perfect fit! Be interesting to see if this new line does take off. Minimates as a brand are really gathering some steam right now so it's the perfect time to try something like this - nostalgic yet kid-focused - which could really get them back into major stores in America like Walmart and Target. groundhog7s Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 I avoided these when they were first out, but I think they're a perfect fit for Minimates. Here's hoping they'll hit retail stores hard. Quote
TBT! Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 I have to say that from what I've seen looking around the internet ( I was too old to have these first time out) these look like they could be a lot of fun! Good job DST, and yes I claim Pew-Trid Skunk as my own! T. Quote
MiniFiend UK Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Cant wait to see more of these and if nothing else they will make cool Ani-men style villains for the superheroes. Quote
karamazov80 Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 (edited) The armor will probably be great for making custom, futuristic bad guys. I had a few of these as a kid, and am glad to see them as Minimates. I hope they will be popular. Here is the post with Ivan's picture, so those who missed it will know of what we write: http://www.minimatemultiverse.com/index.ph...st&p=122072 Edited July 26, 2009 by karamazov80 Quote
Trekker 42 Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 (edited) If I do one, it's gonna be Stone Cobra Edited July 26, 2009 by Trekker 42 Quote
Danny Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 I've just been looking through some of the Beasts themselves and I think there is a huge amount of potential in this license. I'm definitely excited However, is this gonna work at retail? Is the concept too "out there" for todays kids? Cos that's who they will have to market Battle Beasts to, and hard. I can see this going either way; could be a huge line or could tank on the first wave. I don't think this is gonna work being sold to specialty stores as it's not really adult collector-focused. This has to get into TRU and other shops. Ivan makes a great point though (in the SDCC thread). As DST own the entire property, they could easily market other Battle Beasts things (eraser toppers, customisable card games, etc) to ensure visibility of the brand. Quote
drgnrbrn316 Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 This one will be the one we get the most variations of: Web Slinging Spider I'm surprised no one has called Horny Toad yet. Quote
Amazing.JL Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Here's a link to Thanks for the refresher. I think I was a bit young when these came out or didn't care. I remember them though. Nice job of DST getting the license and hope it works out for them. Kinda looking forward to the parts too and the possible playsets. hmmm I wonder if they'll place a battle badge on the mates, sort of feels like they need to be there to know if they're wood, fire, water, etc. Quote
MINI_MYTE Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Here's a link to a Battle Beasts collectors site. Quote
Cappy Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 (edited) Battle Beasts on Wikipedia Pics of all the toys in order Thanks for those links, and Mini Myte's too, I needed the education. Battle Beasts completely passed me by. Did some one say these original figures were 2"? An excellent fit for Minimates, it would seem. So, have we decided if the playset crocodile is actually a Battle Beast, or simply inspired by the line? Regardless, if that 'mate is an example, I'm truly looking forward to the power-armor variations we're going to get for our Minimates! Edited July 26, 2009 by Cappy Quote
captain_cbecker Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Creepy animal-like characters that are elementally aligned with Fire, Water & Wood? Funky, play-on-words type names? Collect all 84? This sounds like an early precursor to Pokemon without the seizures and and lurching, Japanese-style animation. Quote
Twisted Two-Face Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Ya know, i thought these looked ridiculous when i saw the Gator in the playset...then i got to thinking of all the customizablitity with swapable parts and crap...these are gonna be great for army-building variants. The more i look, the more i like, and makes me sad i wasn't alive in the 80s to enjoy them. And i'm guessing that, sicne DST owns the license, that they can create their own characters?? That'd be very, very neat; i like where this is going. Oh, and i so call "Deer Stalker" Quote
MINI_MYTE Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 (edited) I call Gargantuan Gorilla. Edited July 26, 2009 by MINI_MYTE Quote
TBT! Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Is there a randy old goat battlebeast? We were saving that one for BHM T. Quote
