NorthRaider
Hmm, if I was your place I'd think of a good story concept I remember reading from before and seeing if I can invent something along those lines. This might be a fun place to start.

This might be a fun place to start. Ahhhh the Eldritch Abomination. Hard to create a concrete image with those things though... But speaking of the Eldritch Abominations, do you recommend Lovecraft? I've heard quite a bit about him and it's usually really good. I've just never had time to go through his stories on the computer. For some reason I cannot read a book on the computer... it has to be printed page... Weird.
minimadman
Hey guys, need some help. I'm a minor league writer (unpublished) and I've been reading so much humor lately that I can't write anything serious. So I need a scary book. Something that's just insanely scary. Not topical scary (state of the economy or global warming) Not Twilight Scary (What our society has sunken to) Just insanely scary. Any suggestions? Read Shutter Island. Very very serious and very very good book.

And do not under any circumstances, get spoilers. None. At all. Got it?
vbpanizzi
Trekker-I have stated it before, but House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski is amazing. Lovecraft is wonderful. Clive Barker's Books of Blood is also very good.
entertheninja!
Appreciate the advice turtle and I still am very thankful for the reccommendation on the "Yiddish Policeman's Union"! So far I am mesmerized by Fight Club. The way everything just dits is crazy. What should be my next Palahniuk read though? Probably not Choke; it's about a sex addict I believe. Nothing I can't handle and nothing pornographic I'm sure but a bit sketchy nonetheless. Coming from a 15 year old, it wasn't that bad. Pygmy was worse IMO. That one was good, but you have to read stuff over to understand it, as it's written in the perspective of a teenager who just came from a foreign country. I'm going to read Lullaby by him next. But I've still got to read It, Shudder Island, and Darkly Devoted Dexter first. If its not graphic, than I'll look into it. I am almost done with fight club, and I must say it's getting pretty boring. I still like it though. I want to find Solaris, but none of the bookstores have it! It seems interesting. Anyway not sure what book to pick after Fight Club, and i really need a strong reccomendation. Maybe Terminal Spy, not sure.

If you have, try the Bartemaeus Trilogy by Jonathon Stroud. First book is The Amulet of Samarkand. I also recommend his other book for young adults, Heroes of the Valley, but not as strongly. If you want a very much rooted in magic andmystery story your best bet is Bartemaeus. And if you're more of a swords and horses, no magic, Heroes of the Valley. entertheninja!
I read I believe the first book in the bartemaeus trilogy and I wasn't feeling it. That was a while ago so maybe I'll look into again now. Very much obliged bud.
entertheninja!
Eek double post. Finished Fight Club. Liked it a lot. The story is cool and the characters were great, but I felt the ending was way too obscure.
groundhog7s
I started the Iron Man 2 novelization yesterday (much to my wife's disapproval). I normally don't want to know anything about a movie before I see it, but almost always know all the important stuff beforehand just because of trailers, commercials and people who blurt out spoilers. I figured with IM2 I'd beat everybody to the punch and ruin it for myself since I have the chance.
minimadman
I started reading Dirty Jokes and Beer by Drew Carey. He is surprisingly candid about his life. Did you know he was once a Marine?
groundhog7s
I've never read the book, but I love his line on the back about Denny's.
minimadman
I've never read the book, but I love his line on the back about Denny's. If you like him at all you should definitely check it out. It's not like a lot of books by stand up comedians where it's their act written down nor is it ghost written. There are a couple short stories that he wrote in there as well. velvet
just finished dave eggers' "what is the what" a few weeks ago, and now i'm toiling away at "infinite jest" (by the late, great david foster wallace). after that i think i'll check out j.m. coetzee's latest book that just came out recently... I just finished the Harry Potter series all the way through for the first time since the seventh one came out. It was like falling in love all over again. I have also just started the book from David Cross There's a Reason I Drink. It's pretty funny if you like David Cross. i'll definitely have to check that book out--- i'm a huge david cross fan. Trekker 42
Right now I'm rereading Turn Coat by Jim Butcher. The next Dresden book, Changes, comes out Tuesday and I need to be prepared!
BrobotC
ive been thinking about buying any book from the dexter morgan series, are they a good read?
Trekker 42
Annnnnd now I've finished the new Dresden book. And man is it a powerhouse. I swear half of the storyline so far ends right here and seeds are sewn for some insanity later on. Jim Butcher really knows how to put out a great story and have some fun with a great character. I was cheering by the end of it. And I don't cheer much while reading. In other words Holy. Crap. Amazing book.
Punisher
Yes! I've only read two, but I have all four, and they are indeed a good read. Especially if you are a huge fan of the show like me
TM2 Dinobot
I finished The Green and the Gray by Timothy Zahn. It's the only thing of his I've ever had to actually struggle to get through. I called every single 'surprise' from chapter 1. Either he's losing his touch or I've read too much of his stuff.
entertheninja!
Picked up Children of Men by P.D James. Too early to tell, but it seems very good. Really interesting characters.

buttheadsmate
One of my good friends is also my Marvel comic pimp & he has recently started reading Marvel paper-back novels which are published by Boulevard Books. These are virtually unobtainable in the UK & I was wondering if anybody here has access to these secondhand? Perhaps a collection sitting gathering dust? I'd be happy to strike a deal /trade/pay for these ...PMs welcome. Thankyou.
Lobsterman
Just finished "I.O.U." by John Lanchester. Really good analysis of the financial meltdown last year. It helped me understand from a layman's perspective a lot of the shady dealings that caused the house of cards to collapse... and got me really pissed off that a boondoggle like that could sail through without anyone saying anything!
