2014 C2E2 MINIMATE MEET-UP!

Recommended Posts

DST did do a little party at NYCC for the 10th anniversary thing, and invited those of us that were around. UK Collector and myself went, I don't know if any other MMMVers were there. So there is a bit of a precident for DST hosted parties, but that might have been a one time thing, and it was also a unique situation since DST had a separate room for the 10th Ann. display, so I don't know if they had to shell out anything additional for that (though it was catered).

Anyway, I think trying to line up a block of hotel rooms and planning a dinner/party at a local watering hole after the Con closes one night is the best idea I've heard. That way, we can all still have our con experiences and still have a Minimate-centric event. Heck, that way we might even attract some members that would like to come to a MMMV meetup but don't want to pay to go to the con. We'd also have a better chance of having Zach, Chuck, and any of the other DST staffers that might be in town come by and let their hair down. Obviously, if DST wanted to pick up the tab, that would be great, but I think we could get enough members to divide the cost so it wouldn't be too bad.

BTW, I'm blanking on his name, but isn't there an MMMVer that opened a gym in Chicago? Maybe he'd like to host an after-hours get together?

That sounds like a good idea Hellpop. I don't know how anyone else feels, but my only real interest at any convention these days would revolve around a minimate meetup, and any panel that DST would have. I literally only spent $8 at the convention, because I found a Dormamu 2-pack that i was looking for, since the other one I had i was used for customs. I did go to the toy hunter panel, which was pretty cool, and that was it for my con experience .... but, thats all I wanted to do, and had a great time ... and had a nice dinner with Shane's family.

Hey Lobsterman, YB and myself actually talked about what we'd do for our exclusive..... ;-)

I would like to be on that committee. :)

Random thoughts:

A hotel bloc? In my past experiences those never turn out great, as they're not as useful as you might imagine. Maybe it's different when traveling with family, but I rarely spend time in the hotel room (of course, we've usually got 7 people in there anyways). What does it matter if you're next door or 3 floors up?

A meeting room would be great. I don't know if there would be a room available in the convention hall itself, or if the hotel would work better. Something where we can set up tables, chat, swap meet pieces, trade customizing tips.

Food? Would a restaurant be nice or should we cater in? I think if we got Subway or whatever for people to munch on, and then had BYOB or whatever. Just a nice relaxed environment.

Lobby... God bless you sir. tongue.png Some cons do something interesting where their customizing class IS their exclusive. Maybe we could do something like that? A water slide MMMV logo. It would be really cool if DST would spot us some mates, and it would be amazing if they were exclusive. Like, picture a transparent dark blue mat with flakes of white. He's look like a starscape, and then have the cube world on top? Beautiful. But I'm just dreaming...

Set up/break down. We could arrive, either as individuals or a group, to help with the booth in setting up and tearing it apart. Nice gesture.

Day. This is trickiest. Like I said, the thing I hear over and over is "I'll only be there Saturday because I have to work." If you're a bum like me, taking a week off is no problem. I'm a leech on society anyways, what's one more day? But people who have careers and families, that my be tougher. You can't just pull the kids out of school to be there mid week. You can't take a day off cause then who pays the bills? Saturday is the most crowded, but it has the best chance of getting the most people. Sunday would be the second best option. People start leaving, and are tired, but a Sunday afternoon party might be neat. It'd give us 3 days to advertise. Thursday would be the calmest, but the least accessible for normal people. And then there's Friday. People would be fresh in the week, able to stay around chatting.

I'm not trying to make this a big deal. I'm just throwing thoughts out there. Really, all I want it to hang out and chill with people I've know for literally years but have never met.

fatcow was the member who announced it here: http://www.minimatemultiverse.com/index.php?showtopic=10956&hl=retroactive

That's a great idea to have it there if it's open or available. Of course, that just reminded I never got any prize for naming the place...

This sounds awesome, but 2014 may be an odd year for me. Looking to buy a house, which means probably no holidays....especially comic cons where I'm liable to spend double the amount of money I'd spend on a normal holiday.

I will more than likely be going NYCC this year again though. Would be great to see some of you there.

Which was awesome btw, shame I had to run off somewhere else. Better planning needed this year so I can enjoy more drinking and socialising with you guys...assuming you'll be there hellpop!

A safe bet... though I don't know if I'll be there for as long. My brother was living in the city, giving me a place to crash over the weekend, but he's moved out. But I've got a friend who's an artist, so I do get a chance to tag along to some cool things... last year we almost had dinner with Paul Levitz, but it fell through....

TM2, a "hotel bloc" doesn't necessarily mean all rooms together. In fact, it rarely does. Before I became a computer nerd, I managed "hotel blocs" for major sports orgs like NBA, NHL, NFL, etc. A "hotel bloc" generally means a set number of reserved rooms at a set price per room. Just FYI.

Also, they general require someone to sign and guarantee the bloc.

Dammit. I signed up for this idea entirely predicated on the notion we'd be able to open up all of the connecting doors between the rooms and do a giant 100 yard MMMV Slip-n-Slide.

Been there! You can request it. Hotel properties hate to follow through, but it is fun when they do. I used to put all my staff on one floor so that I didn't have to travel the whole building to find folks.

I was thinking about a day. What about Sunday afternoon? The con shuts down at 5. Most of us are tired and broke by that point anyways. We could do either before the con closes, or wait until those of us helping shut down the DST booth. That still gives us some of the afternoon and all evening. And it works better than Thursday for sure. Just a thought.

I'd like to put my name on any list for next year & I'll put my money where my mouth is as soon as the tickets go on sale . Accommodation is the area where 'somebody on the ground' will help me out . I shared a room with Cappy in San Diego some years ago ....we still talk tongue.png

My trip will involve a holiday rather than just the Con so beware of suggesting that you want me to meet your Mom.....or your sister 'back home' whistling.gif

I'd love to come say hi to the guys I know and meet those I don't but 2014 is already looking stupidly busy & fully booked for me with several long hauls to weddings, probably including one in France... so It looks like i'll have to pass again... sad.png

This was all so much easier when I lived in San Diego and you all came to me smile.png

I'll say! This bloke comes swaggering in with his British accent, renewing previous connections with the local birds ... they were calling him! Do NOT let this man meet your female friends and relatives.

:P
