Toy Story 3

as Pixar can do no wrong:

My personal opinion (from having worked with then on a professional level), is that they are a bunch of ****'* ( yes that was Rad's favourite word.) and my loathing for them is so deep that I won't even watch the movies they make or for that matter buy/do anything that puts money in their pockets.

Well, I hope to never deal with them on a professional level, then. As far being story-tellers, those guys are up there with the Coen Brothers, IMO. . .well, maybe they aren't quite that good.

They're at Nolan level at least. The Cohen Bros though, I'm not familiar with. But que sera sera. I'll get to them once I clear off the rest of The List. The rest of The List are movies I want to see more...

The Cohen Bros though, I'm not familiar with.

Raising Arizona, Fargo, Big Lebowski, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading, etc. Surely you have heard of one or two of these?

pleasedontbetrue, pleasedontbetrue, pleasedontbetrue,

...it's true isn't it?

*&%*#%(*^#&%# WHY? WHY WHY WHY?!?!?! Why the HELL are they wasting my time with this crap? Who honestly thinks Toy Story 3 is a good idea? I ask you? This is the worst movie news I've heard in a long time. I mean for crying out loud, they've finished the story. What are they going to do now, try and find Rex's parents?! This is bloody insane. I can't believe this.

They give me this, instead of Incredibles 2? [/veiled threat]

I don't care what they do after seeing UP this afternoon Pixar could animated the phone book and I'd be first in line to see it. The Toy Story series is awesome they can make as many sequels as they wish. TBT sorry to hear that your loathing for Pixar precludes you from enjoying their top notch entertainment. UP is spectacular. I am astounded by the way that Pixar injects a heart and soul into all of their movies. Live action movies have nothing on them.

I liked "o brother", "fargo", and of course, "the big lebowski", but other than that, I don't like the coen brothers much. "miller's crossing" was alright... but meh

that being said, I love toy story and I love toy story 2 even more! so I have been thoroughly excited about toy story 3 for a long time now.

Well Disney was going to do it without Pixar initially, but then John Lasseter was like "NO YOU ****S, I'M GOING TO DO IT SO YOU DON'T RUIN IT EVEN THOUGH WE NEVER PLANNED ON IT AND WE'RE GOING TO DO IT RIGHT AFTER ALL OF THE SEQUELS YOU MESSED UP"

So it's going to be good.

Oh they did "O Brother"? Didn't know that. Well I liked that one but it does not come CLOSE to making my top 30 much less top 10. That's all I've seen of the Cohens and honestly, I'm not impressed. Never said i've never heard of the Cohens, just haven't seen much of their stuff.

And as for Pixar, I really do want to see UP and I'm not a big fan of Toy Story. I believe, though good movies they are, Pixar's later stuff beats it out.

And damn we need Incredibles 2. I loved The Incredibles, it's still my favorite of Pixar's. Maybe UP will change that...

They are critical darlings, and for good reason, as they are the masters of their craft. The Big Lebowski is the best comedy to come out in the last 20 years, in my opinion, and No Country was one movie that actually deserved the "Best Picture" Oscar.

Really now? Interesting... As far as I can tell there hasn't been a movie that won the Best Picture oscar for being the best damn movie of the year since... Wow... Maybe Return of the King. But honestly it was kinda stuck in the middle of undeservings in a year rather devoid of good films (X-Men 2 nonwithstanding). Kinda reminds me of 1992 when Unforgiven won. There were few films that were any damn good from the year of my birth (Basically Aladdin and Batman Returns) so they just had to pick the best of what they had. Probably my answer would have to be Forrest Gump was the last TRULY deserving film.

I can say without a doubt that the least deserving film of recent years IMHO to win best picture was The Departed. My god I HATED The Departed so much. I would have given that year to Casino Royale without a doubt...

And looking back at 2007 I see that it too was devoid of basically anything good... So it looks like it was a 1992...

And as for Pixar... They deserve every Best Animated they got!

I guess any Oscar win/nomination really should be taken with a grain of salt, as there's always a greater level of politicking involved in the selection of these than people think.

I personally kinda feel this way about Slumdog Millionaire: granted, I haven't seen that movie yet, but believe me when I say that such quirky rags-to-riches films in a Third World setting are not exactly new. I say this is just one of those weird cases of Hollywood tripping all over themselves with an "innovative" concept like they did with Brokeback Mountain (gay cowboys!) and Juno (a pregnant teen not keeling over with angst!) while completely missing the mark with their earlier snubs of Scorcese and even guys like Orson Welles and Stanley Kubrick. It's probably a side effect of the Oscars and other awards bodies turning into some sort of dated, out-of-touch elitist entity or something.

Yeah, I think you are pretty spot on, Raider, which is why I feel "No Country" was one of the rare times when the truly best picture won. Of course, even there, I don't think that it won based on its merits. Instead, as with Scorsese with "Departed," I feel that the award was basically given as a "life time achievement"-type award, because these are amongst the greatest film-makers today, and got overlooked for some of their other (arguably greater) films. I do feel the movie deserved it, but am too cynical to think that the voters voted for the right reasons.

The Oscars don't mean much to me, honestly.

All righty then.

Pardon the thread necro but if I'm not mistaken, Toy Story 3 is showing in theaters as we speak. Just came back from seeing it today and I feel I won't be able to properly sound off on it until I get something out of the way first:

These days when it comes to mass opinion on something like Pixar movies, it's impossible to find a middle ground. I hear a lot of people saying that while Toy Story 3 is an unnecessary sequel, it's still going to be good anyway. However even if you say it's good, you still can't take any full pride in saying that because in the back of your mind you'll still feel like you could've had something else "way better" instead.

In any case this is just my usual long-winded way of saying that I thought Toy Story 3 is actually not that bad a movie, but that I am positive I would still get lynched for this opinion. Because fandom in the real world works way too much like Watchmen (i.e. the eternal war of "Grey areas" versus "No compromise").

I saw this with the kids last weekend, and regardless of everyone else's opinion, I loved it! I don't think it was an unnecessary sequel at all and am surprised there hasn't been more talk of it on here actually. My kids loved every minute of it as did my wife, call us what you will, I don't care, but it was a great movie. I just hope they don't go too far and try to make a 4th, THAT would be unnecessary.

BS

While they aren't making a Toy Story 4, apparently a sequel of sorts is in the works. Thankfully it's only going to be an animated short they're probably gonna stick in the DVD or before the next Pixar movie, kinda like "Mike's New Car" was for Monsters Inc.

Which reminds me: the short they showed right before Toy Story 3 (titled "

Day & Night

") was pretty cool too. I liked the clever "mixing of mediums" they used in there.

I loved this movie (especially the fantasy sequence at the beginning). My daughter was on the verge of tears at the end of the movie. I love kids reactions to movies like this!

The short before the movie was probably one of my least favorites.

I can only imagine how much the whole abandonment subtext of this movie would have screwed me up if I was seven or eight years old when it came out. When I was that age I was very attached to my toys. I tried not to show favoritism to any particular one and I'd feel bad if I had ignored a toy for a while. It wasn't obsessive or anything, but I treated them like they had feelings.

Of course, as a kid I knew my toys weren't alive, but this movie probably would have made me really wonder. They'd go to extreme lengths just to be played with. There was grief over toys that weren't around anymore (Squeaker, Bo, etc.) The fear over being left behind or thrown out seemed genuine.

If I had been exposed to this movie as a kid I probably would have never been able to get rid of any toy.

Oh wait... :)

OK... well... I saw this yesterday and I did not get what I was expecting.

I was absolutely not expecting to see the best movie of this year so far. But I did. I was not expecting to see a treat on a visual and emotional level. But I did. I was absolutely not expecting to have the tears running down my cheeks at the end of this film. And yaknow what? I freakin did. It is absolutely my favorite Pixar film easily. This is the only studio who I can fully count on to deliver Every. Single. Time. My expectations were set high from Up. They were set so high that I wasn't sure they could be beaten. They were. They absolutely were. Pixar cannot fail. The closest they came to failure was A Bug's Life and that movie was such a visual extravaganza (and Kevin Spacey's performance so good) that it's impossible to hate it.

Still.

Toy Story 3 is absolutely this year's best movie so far released, bar none. Probably Pixar's best film yet. And an absolute must-see.

Oh and little tidbit for those who have already seen it:

The garbage man who serves Andy's house is Sid the malicious toy torturer from Toy Story 1
