I just don't see DC Minimates working. It's been tried so many times and failed repeatedly.

I know the natural reaction is to compare DC to Marvel but let's face it; DC simply doesn't have as many viable characters as Marvel. DC has ONE money-maker; Batman. Everyone else – including their "man of steel" – is a dud. WB can't get another successful franchise off the ground. The last Justice League film project was axed days before it started filming. The Wonder Woman TV pilot was turned down by NBC. A concept for a live-action Batman spin-off, "The Graysons," was (thankfully) discarded before it even made it into production. The vast majority of WB's DC projects languish in development hell for years if not decades and the few that make it out end up being unrecognizable bastardizations. (Yes, that was a Catwoman reference.)

On the other hand, Marvel managed to make even some of their second-tier characters household names and they're not stopping. An Ant-Man film is in the works, a Guardians of the Galaxy feature is on the slate, and even Squirrel Girl is getting face time with the mass market. Marvel is left by Disney to do what it does best while DC is practically sabotaged by its parent company, WB, at every turn.

DC Entertainment might have its act together when it comes to animation but Mattel cancelled its Young Justice toy line because retailers just aren't interested. And if you can't promote a toy line with a critically acclaimed, high-rated cartoon, you're screwed.

One problem is that DC characters are gods and consumers don't identify with gods. They identify with teen angst. They identify with people with problems, whether it's peer pressure or alcoholism or dysfunctional families and Marvel excels at offering that. Marvel exists in the real world – New York and Los Angeles – while DC is a fairytale with places like Metropolis, Gotham City, and Blüdhaven.

And then there are the capes. The DC Universe is loaded with cape-wearing characters, far more than Marvel. Costume practicality aside, capes have always been a chore to translate into toys. Do you go with cloth or sculpted plastic? Do you want it flexible enough for the character to actually sit down or does it only need to look good in the standard "waiting for a bus" pose?

Finally, which character has a cooler name; Rocket Raccoon or Ace the Bat-Hound?

No, I really don't see DC Minimates working. At all. Ever.

Whoa, Mr. Negative! Don't lose hope.

Five years ago, everyone on this board would have given The Avengers movie a 10% chance of being successful. Hawkeye? He uses a bow and arrow as his "super-power". How the hell do you make that cool when bad guys routinely carry AK-47s? But Marvel pulled it off with the blockbuster of the summer.

The best DC stories occur when the DC characters are allowed to be gods. Angst only works with Batman. The problem is no one is daring to break the mold established by the dark and edgy stories. I think a Justice League movie that goes directly to what fans want to see - a spectacular CGI filled explosion of mayhem between the Justice League and Legion of Doom - would be a hit. Screw the origin story. Make the no holds barred extravaganza everyone wants to see and do the origin stories after you've destroyed half of earth in the beat down battle of the 21st century. If fans take a liking to one of the Justice League characters, then that becomes your spin off.

I would like to see an experiment with cloth capes and DC Minimates would be a cool testing ground. Use Luke's wire design with logo's printed on the cape and you are good to go.

Lastly, I do think people identify with gods but not on a strictly personal level. These types of stories are bigger than us and tell us something about ourselves and who we want to be. Greek Mythology communicates some timeless themes about good and evil, morality, love, and death.

I just don't want to buy another Batman or Superman minimate, or wait 9 more waves before they get around to the characters we didn't get around to last time. And that's all I have to say on the matter of DC mates.

Now we just sit and wait for the internet to break down tonight under the weight of whatever gets revealed this afternoon.

Tease you about what TM2?

The two little girls next door to me collect MLP. The MLP people are not nearly as bad as the perverted lot that collect those bishoujo child porn statues and figures. Creepy...

But they won't start off with those. We got 10 Batman figs in C3 and immediately turned around and gave us 3 more. (which is a bit unfair since they licensed Batman from WB and not DC. but there were 2 Superman in C3 and we got 3 in DCD.

Remember, as is pointed out to me all the time, companies make no money off the secondary marker. So they won't pay attention to the people that already have 13 Batmen, they'll give us another in wave 1. And 3. And 8. Again.

Sorry, don't mean to drag up the DC discussion. lets go back to teasing me about Ponies.

You collect MLP?! :woot: No, really, do you? I love to see collections that contain hundreds of these things. I just don't care for them. I kid about stuff, but know in reality I collect toys no matter what form they are in. It would be hypocritical to say they are any sillier to collect.

I'll always be creeped out by the bishoujo stuff no matter what...

And along the lines of the DC minis argument... Marvel has given us how many Spidermans and Wolverines???

They look like half nekkid children. Like I said, to each his own. Nice Pony collection. My neighbors would go nuts. There a ton of the MLPs on ebay. If demand isn't there, price will crash. Good luck.

Dammit... this is exactly what I DIDN'T want to hear about Derpy... lol...

Don't get me wrong, I saw it coming, but I still hoped I'd be wrong.

I live in Chicago, so I don't go to SDCC... that said I sometimes order exclusives after the con from Hasbro's website, or pick them up on resale at Wizard World Chicago. Usually the GI Joes are sold out before I even realize they're up, but the Marvel figs stay in stock for long enough for me to pick up, and the My Little Pony stays in stock nearly forever. I suspect that won't be the case this year, and Derpy will sell out as fast as the GI Joes...

So anyway... when Hasbro posts their exclusives on the web store, as they normally do after the con, I'm gonna TRY to get one before they sell out, but I'm not optimistic. I was hoping to get more than one, because not only does my sister also want one, but I wanted two so I could re-style one's hair (shut up!) but at this point I'm thinking I'd be lucky if I get my hands on one.

Worst case scenario, there are plenty on ebay... price isn't good, but supply is ample. And hopefully people will start gouging eachother more and it will see a drop. Seems the highest prices on any exclusive are always the weekend of the con, and far out from the con after supply dries up. There's a slump between the two... where the price starts to dip, because supply is high, but demand dies off. Which is usually the best time to buy.

I don't really care about Zecora... the glow in the dark gimmick kills my interest. Rather just get the normal, non-con exclusive version when it's released later.

Wait... is this the minimate forum? lolz...

PS. I sympatize with your wife, and understand her problem, but as a guy in his twenties who wants a Derpy... yeah sorry. I want a Derpy. But if it makes you feel better, I can't get one as of yet either.

Gillbob, some of us are getting together at C2E2 2013, so look for us then. Sorry for the Pony-talk. I was curious. I think they are interesting, just not for me.

I know some things have been held back for the panel, so its shouldn't be over yet.

Wait wait wait. There are translucent ponies?

But... But... I don't wanna buy ponies. But having them, for some form of jousting for TTFC? Well now...

(See how I try to justify that shit? Yeah.)

Of course they're probably rare and stuff right? Hell if I know.

Oh yeah, minimates! Thundercats! Alpha Flight! Battle Beasts! Other stuff! WOO!!
