NEW YORK - Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence in a possible drug-related death, police said. He was 28.

According to WNBC, Ledger was found with pills strewn all around him.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper, who went to let Ledger know the masseuse was there, found him unconscious at approximately 3:30 p.m. ET, according to the New York Times. After receiving no response from the actor after shaking him, they called authorities.

Holy shit. He looked so awesome as Joker in the upcoming Batman movie.

I was kinda hoping I was being "Roy Rolled". Very sad news indeed. When I first heard of Heath Ledger playing the Joker I was like i'm not sure about that but I thought after seeing the trailer boy was I wrong! My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.

And we're sad... why? Were any of our lives personally effected? I feel sorry for his ex and his kid, sure, but he's just another actor that OD'd on pills. At least they finished Batman.

It's amusing. They killed off the Joker the first time round, so they were unable to bring him back, and now the new actor died, so they're REALLY unable to bring him back. :P

I'm always sad if someone dies. I don't give special treatment though.

Actually I had a friend die a few years ago due to an OD that I didn't directly cause but I contributed to. I have to live with that everyday when I see or hear from his wife. I'm just thinking of the lives Heath Ledger (the man, not the actor) will impact with this tragedy.

Yes, I agree. The human aspect is ALWAYS sad and moving. I don't understand how people come out of the woodwork to say they'll miss someone famous when they die. They didn't actually know the person.

I feel the same way about this that I did about when that porn star died. Sad that a human being is dead. But with the millions and millions and MILLIONS of people dead in Africa and other hot spots in the world, I do have to beg the question: Why do people care about one #@&&*$ OD'd actor above the millions dead every year. Seems to be misplaced grief and attention.

Sure, but you can still be personally touched by an actor or any other contributor to any form of art. By definition, art should be something that effects you emotionally, to some degree or another, whether it be movies, theatre, music, or something more tangible like a painting or sculpture. If someone deeply moves another person through his or her particular art, I see no reason why there wouldn't be some kind of connection. That is generally what people refer to when they say they'll miss someone they've never actually met personally.

I think that God Magnus is right. Further, I think that celebrities, including politicians and athletes, often become symbols that we identify ourselves with. If you feel that John Coltrane, Desmond Tutu, or Ingmar Bergman understands things the way that you do for instance, represents these parts of yourself to others, and/or perhaps exemplifies what you hope that you can be in some way, then like Magnus says, you develop emotional attachments as if you really knew these people, and you feel for these people when bad things happen to them. I think Ledger's acting in some of his more recent work, particularly, could have impacted people in this way.

I think one of the things I respected most about Heath was that he didnt sign his name on any film that was thrown at him...he was more choosey about what he did and was willing to take risky roles (Brokeback Mountain) and took roles that he wanted to do not just anything that had a dollar sign attached to it. He really seemed like someone to relate to and wasn't always in the tabloids as being a problem celeb. I feel saddened by his death and wish his family, friends and fans all the best.

I wonder if there is some sort of DC curse going around? I mean, Keaton hasn't been as successful after he played Batman, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin ruined Joel Shumacher's reputation which he was only able to gain back after the excellent Phantom of the Opera film, George Reeves's had an odd death, Christopher Reeve's accident, and now Heath Ledger. What's going on here?

But the real question here is what's going to happen to the film after Dark Knight? If the Joker survives Dark Knight, which I think he will, who will be the Joker in the sequel?

James Dean,Bruce Lee?..... & for the record I actually thought Ledger was a superb actor & will be sorely missed.

I was a huge fan of Heath's work and I will miss seeing him on screen greatly. I'm glad they got Dark Knight done in time.

I have a very short list of favourite actors, but Heath Ledger was right near the top. I was actually talking about him just the other day, saying what a fantastic actor he is. This is a terrible shame, and brings great sadness to me.

All the best to his family.

CNN has said that the early reports of strewn pills were "in error" and that the containers were for prescription drugs; he was being treated for influenza.

It may be an unexpected drug interaction, in that case... since no illegal drugs were found in his system.

Sometimes, flu kills people just because it can.

personally, i found myself a whole lot more moved by his death than i would have expected otherwise... I don't know why, but he always seemed like a really decent guy to me, and for all it's ridiculousness' "A Knight's Tale" really moved me when i saw it and has remained one of my favorite movies since...

It is, oddly enough, possible for someone to feel sad over the death of a person they didn't know personally. Just because he was a celebrity does not invalidate a real sense of loss.
