DSTZach
In case nobody's ever seen this, this is the photo guide I shot in early 2004 for ToyFare #80. It covers the first few waves, then the last few pages do some mix-and-matching, and run down some odds. Kinda fun. I supervised the shoot, if I didn't shoot it myself, and the inimitable Jesse DeStasio wrote it.
Lobsterman
"M.O.D.O.K.: Not in this lifetime" It's kind of amazing thinking about how far the line has come since then. Did the guys at DST even think they would run for 25 waves, much less 50? Go give your comrades a pat on the back, Zach! ---- The only thing missing from that odds list now is Alpha Flight... youbastards
Love the "Not in this lifetime" comment in reference to MODOK!!! I spot the infamous dark grey Stealth Iron Man! Thanks for this blast from the past, Zach! Looks like Alpha Flight and Angar the Screamer are the only ones mentioned in that article that aren't produced...yet. Mirymate
Cool stuff, Zach. I guess we're on our second lifetime then, as MODOk arrives this summer. Shame poor Alpha Flight's odds have barely improved.

Did the guys at DST even think they would run for 25 waves, much less 50? Chuck says at every opportunity that they NEVER thought it would get this far. I hope to discuss our plans for Wave 50 very soon. Shame poor Alpha Flight's odds have barely improved. Yes, a shame.
Squall
Gold Spider-Man; The Minimate You'll Never Own. LOL! I love the use of common items on the background. Was it intended to show some scale comparison?
Jeff
Thanks sooo much for this! I'd save articles from Toyfare/Wizard over the years but somehow this got lost in the shuffle. This just made my day.
winkerbean
So this Andy chap that said "not in this lifetime" he's still alive right. I'd hate to think he gave his life so MODOK would live!
Tigertail
Thanks for the pics, Zach. Brings great memories on hunting for those
DSTZach
I love the use of common items on the background. Was it intended to show some scale comparison? Yes, absolutely. I think Doctor Doom is standing on my personal copy of the Atari game "Warlords." And I should point out that Lurch77 already had this in his official timeline thread, but I had no idea, since I'd mentioned it in the photo thread and people had expressed interest. Also, I did a search for "ToyFare guide" and nothing showed up.
Lurch77
So many sight gags in that guide, you guys did a great job! I always wondered though what's the red thing that Juggernaut is standing by? That guide also helped inspire Quick Customs
Punisher
What a great article, thanks for showing Zach! I laughed out loud at Cyclops standing next to the visine. Also, back to school Hulk is now officially THE GREATEST MINIMATE CUSTOM EVER!
hellpop
Why is Victoria's Secret Model Mary Jane wearing a belt?
DSTZach
So many sight gags in that guide, you guys did a great job! I always wondered though what's the red thing that Juggernaut is standing by? I think it's supposed to be a crimson gem of Cyttorak, although where we found a red, gem-shaped object and why we used it is beyond me, since it's not recognizable as much of anything. Sometimes you look back at photo shoots you did and think, "...Huh. That's weird." Pat McCallum would ream me out if a picture didn't make sense or was hard to understand. He taught me everything I know about photography, although working alongside professional photographers for several years helped a lot. Glad I didn't throw away money on an art degree! Oh, wait... Why is Victoria's Secret Model Mary Jane wearing a belt? Am I the only guy who would draw belts on all of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit models? TENIME_art
I've got the full poster that was shown in part at the beginning of the article on my wall behind my Avengers Mansion (it was above my Minimates shelf, but they kinda...grew over it, lol). MINI_MYTE
I sure do miss Toy Fare magazine. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane though. Edited May 1, 2012 by MINI_MYTE
youbastards
I love that a.) Jean Grey is standing on diskettes, something that would be hard pressed to find laying around just 8 years later b.) She still hasn't returned to the 616 Marvel Universe since this was published (to the best of my knowledge...Miry?) c.) Thunderbird is standing on a pile of casino chips! Zach - is that the Toyfare Gold Spidey that you said you weren't sure where it ended up? Mirymate
She kinda returned, sort of... That whole Phoenix: Warsong/White Hot Room/Prime Host thing. Long and short I think her spirit has been absorbed into the Phoenix Force and her corpse is still in the ground... I think. If they were clear about how they left her status, they were clearly vague. Something tells me things will be clearer relatively soon. Tavinos
I want a gold spidey! I've been collecting minimates for about a month and have never herd of it
DSTZach
I hope you get one some day, Tavino. And yes, YB, that was it. Tenime, how big is your poster? Is it printed by you or someone else? Edited May 2, 2012 by Zach Oat

TENIME_art
Tenime, how big is your poster? Is it printed by you or someone else? It was from a Wizard (or affiliated) magazine. It's basically a pullout, so it's the size of a Toyfare opened. I can try to take a pic of what's still exposed, lol.
Shanester
That pic of the minis fighting Galactus has been the wallpaper on my laptop for years now. It has transferred to at least 3 different machines. I still have the TF issue even though it is a bit ragged and dog-earred. Nice stuff Zach. About 6 years ago I saw you taking photos on Preview Day (SDCC) and threw my arms up and yelled "Oooaaaattttt!" You turned around and looked at me very worriedly. Next time we meet, I will try not to frighten you.
