hellpop
Hey guys, I've finally decided to getting around to posting my customs. I'm going to be uploading the images to my blog, so I hope no one minds going there to check them out. It's just easier that way. They're almost all quick customs, but I like 'em, and I hope you will too. First up: The Question Followed by: Black Adam EDIT: Images added Edited June 26, 2019 by hellpop

hellpop
I've been really, really lax about sharing my customs. Mostly because I'm lasy, and a lousy photographer. But I want to turn over a new leaf; call it an early new year's resolution. And I want to start with a bang, a simple custom but one I'm pretty thrilled with: Grendel! Special thanks to Luke314pi, who kindly printed the decal for me. You'll find that decal, along with a little bit more about my methodology, at my blog: Grendel
hellpop
I posted this in the Marvel section, when his name came up, but figured I'd throw him in here too: Quasar! I don't make many Marvel customs, because they could be made obsolete at any time, and I'm more interested in filling out the ranks of DC Comics, as well as making various indie characters. That said, Quasar's one of my favorite characters (I think he's the most underrated character in the Marvel Universe), and I've always wanted a figure of him. And, honestly, I don't think DST's ever going to do him. So making a Quasar custom has always been on the back of my mind, but he didn't come together until Marvel Wave 31 arrived. That's when two pieces for this guy were released: Captain Britain's hair (the perfect Quasar hair) and Mar-Vell's chest. Add an Angel head, Mary Marvel's arms (though Marty McFly's will do also), some Ocean Master wrist bands, the Sentry's cape, and Ultimate Spidey's crotch and legs, and you've got yourself a Quasar! He's not perfect, unfortunately, because his chest symbol doesn't look quite like Mar-Vell's. My ultimate plan is to paint a C3 Alt Superman's cape blue, then use this decal here: But he'll do for now. Oh, the energy blast from the second picture comes from an Iron Man 2 figure. Fits on the bracelet just right. EDIT: Added a bit more about him at my blog here. EDIT AGAIN: I did, in fact, modify him, using the formula described above. Take a look: Sorry my flash washed out the symbol a bit, but I ended up painting over the decal edges up to the star, and I'm pretty happy with it. Here, by the way, is the decal I used, sized appropriately: Enjoy! Edited November 20, 2010 by hellpop

Oh, the energy blast from the second picture comes from an Iron Man 2 figure. Fits on the bracelet just right. Sweet Quasar, hellpop! He's a fave of mine so it's nice to at least see a credible QC of him in 'Mate form. I was actually thinking of Quasar as I made the wrist gauntlets on Trigon for my DC Custom Design entry! Excellent job!
pawcanada
Definitly making my own version sa Quasar is a great character and I have about half of what I need lying around in my parts box . Was it Silver Age or X Factor Angel you used?

Was it Silver Age or X Factor Angel you used? I think it was the Champions, actually. Might be SA, but definitely not X-Factor, since I don't have that one. Looking at the Database.... looks like I used SA Angel.
pawcanada
Curses... That might be hard to track down. I supose a Captain Britain face might work though. Alternatively I have a spare DA Sentry face...
hellpop
Curses... That might be hard to track down. I supose a Captain Britain face might work though. Alternatively I have a spare DA Sentry face... Sentry face should work very well. I liked the FA Angel face because it reminds me of Greg Capullo's work, whom I consider the definitive Quasar artist (if there is such a thing), and I was really trying to capure that look. But any face with blond eyebrow highlights (Capt. Brit, Hank Pym, Hawkeye, Captain America) should work just as well. I think at least one of the heads in the new Cap box set would be a great replacement head. By the way, if anyone wants to do this and is in need of a Mar-Vell torso, I believe I have an extra one that I'd be glad to trade. PM me and we'll talk. hellpop
Here's one of the ones I consider a standout of my collection, the Demon: Yes, that's an Action League head ol' Etrigan is sporting. I was so pleased with him, I made a Jason Blood: You can read more about him (and see my bonus Black Manta custom) here at my blog.
boyd
Great Demon! I'm surprised with how well the Demon head looks on a Minimate body.
hellpop
Great Demon! I'm surprised with how well the Demon head looks on a Minimate body. It's definitely a little big... if I were to give you a profile picture, you'd probably be able to see that more clearly. That cape makes a big difference. I toyed with using the powerhouse piece from the Red Hulk, but I just didn't like the look as much. But it does match up pretty well, especially now that AA is doing more sculpted heads with things like Ghostbusters and Universal Monsters. hellpop
Here's a few JSA guys: Hourman: Green Lantern: For a full description, including formulas, check out the full post at my blog: http://dinosaursinf14s.blogspot.com/2010/1...-and-green.html Edited December 12, 2010 by hellpop
MiniFiend UK
Great JSA figures! I have always wondered how someone would tackle Classic Hourman's mask as its always stumped me what it actually is. Is it a hood like Specter's and he has mask underneath or does it go all the way over to cover his face with eye holes. Always a fan of Alan Scott. great work on both figures. karamazov80
Awesome! Hourman's one of my favorite relatively unknown characters, and that Spirit mask is a good idea. To minifiend's post, it is a yellow hood with eyeholes, so the black is just shadow.
hellpop
Thanks guys! Karamazov, if I remember correctly, you and I had the same basic idea to use the Spectre hood at about the same time (I even found your post in your old custom thread). Minifiend: As Karamazov said, it's a hood that covers his face, and the black part is just shading. The recent DCUC Hourman figure actually doesn't include the shading, which is a shame, IMHO. If you check out my blog post I talk about it a little bit more, but basically I was inspired by the DC Direct Pocket Superheroes figure in making him. Probably the absolute best way to make him is to sculpt a bit onto the hood, but I think this is an acceptable substitute.
hellpop
The first (well, I guess not the first, since I did show off Constantine...) of my many Vertigo Minimates: Shade the Changing Man. From behind: As always, recipes and more (this time including a couple Shade wallpapers) can be found at my blog.
boyd
Fully agree with you that Shade is a classic run of comics. I should dig them out and re-read them sometime. And your Shade customs is quite good. The gradient works really well for him.
