Marvel's making soup with yesterday's sandwiches.

So... Somebody's stolen Stark tech and is selling it to the highest bidder, and now Tony has to build something even better to stop it. It's like he's... going to war... with his own... armor. Like some kind of... Armor War, I guess? Is that it?

I love how Marvel can basically just copy/paste from the backs of old TPBs into press releases these days.

Having just caught up with the current Iron Man series I was thinking just yesterday that with all the new 'improved' villains armors that there would be an 'Stark wars' event soon.

Some other thoughts...

I do like the look of the current black/electroblue armor and think it'd be a great minimate, that reboot one looks to have more gold in it.

Stark isn't currently wearing the armor & unless I misread it Rhodey is being Iron Man again, so they have already gone back to older storylines.

Why do they have to keep rebooting back to issue #1 only to go back to the older numbering system in a few issues!

It's like pro wrestling--they've gotta rehash story ideas every few years because there's only so much creativity to go around. Honestly, I don't mind that so much as "what kind of outrageous cross-title 'event' ideas can we come up with this year? And which A- and B-list characters can we kill off only to revise a few months later?" If creativity nowadays means Identity Crisis, Brand New Day, etc., then I say let's do Demon in a Bottle again instead

It must work from a sales POV. Never underestimate the ability of comic collectors to buy into lame gimmicks.

Funny you should say that...

If you read 'fear itself', Stark fell off the wagon while worknig on forging the weapons in Asgard and is currently being sued for being drunk in charge of the armor!

I've been thinking the same, especially if they did it with tampos on a clear blue base! I wonder if that would work, or if the light wouldn't come through and it would end up looking all black?

See, I actually wonder if it's the opposite. Love 'em or hate 'em, there have been a lot of very different, continuity-wrecking storylines over the past decade (House of M, Civil War, Secret Invasion, even AvsX) I'd argue were very creative, but got a lot of mixed reviews from long-time readers who didn't feel like they portrayed the characters in a way that was comfortable or familiar. It almost feels like this is an attempt to tap back into that good ole days nostalgia – "Hey, remember how awesome comics were when you first started reading them in the seventies and eighties? Let's do that again."

I don't know if I can stay on Iron Man after Fraction leaves the book anyway, Gillen's a great writer sometimes but Greg Land's creepy porn-tracing is more offputting than even the worst Liefeld art to me.

I'm with TBT on that current armor making for a great mate though, and a Rescue too please DST

I'm incredibly uninformed, but I kinda figured that about 80% of Iron Man stories are about Tony stark going to war with his own armor.

I'd say the bulk of Iron Man stories in recent history are him trying to rebuild his company/life from whatever his latest disaster was and people/enemies from his past coming back to get some sort of revenge. History coming back to haunt him is a recurring theme for Tony Stark.

The people stealing his tech storylines haven't happened in a big 'armor wars' way for a long time ( Norman Osborn excluded! ;) ).

Well that's the other side of the coin I was referring to. Either they are rehashing old ideas, or just jumping the shark by taking what should be reserved for What If? or "Elseworlds"-type stories (i.e., House of M) and making them canon. In fairness, I stopped reading most comics altogether awhile back after getting tired of all of it, so it's possible Quesada, Lee/Didio, etc. aren't doing that stuff to the extent those companies used to.

It does, but it works less and less. Marvel's gone to the relaunch well so often that most people have seen through the gimmick, especially when they get on this "new numbering/return to old numbering for anniversary issue/renumber again" cycle. But Marvel has always, always been shortsighted as a publisher.

I don't have much to add here that hasn't been said, what marvel is doing doesn't surprise me in the least. I already quit following comics two years back- I just got tired of all the bullshit. I need a solid, unchanging canon, and it seems like no one knows how to offer that. So all I read these days are the Adventure Time comics, which may not have a solid canon, per se, but at least it never contradicts itself haha.

What I did come here to say is that the title of this thread make me bust out laughing, i'd never heard that phrase before and it completely fits.

Yeah, why can't they be more like DC? After Wolfman and Perez's Crisis on Infinite Earths, canon was firmly established, alternate universes went the way of the dodo, and DC has stuck with it through thick and thin :highfive2:

I'm actually not defending Marvel though my posts seems to come off that way re-reading it :D Just that I disagree with both companies' approaches in this department. Crisis on Infinite Earths was seen as necessary at the time because of so much confusion that the multiverse created. Now DC just does a reboot every few years in the interest of improving sales and backtracking/negating the important decisions guys that came before made.

Out of curiosity how many major (and I mean SERIOUSLY major) comics haven't gone through at least one continuity snafu? Hellboy maybe? I dunno. I haven't seriously read in years. I pick and choose storylines that seem particularly interesting and just say "To hell with continuity. I hope I can figure out what's going on in this one thing alone."

I. . .just say "To hell with continuity."

Mr. Quesada, is that you?

This makes me wish there was a "Like" feature on here, haha. And to answer the Hellboy question, that still follows a solid continuity to my knowledge- I quit reading it about a year ago now though
