MsMarvel fan
I recently bought a lot on ebay, they have arrived but they smell like an ashtray. Has anyone experienced this before and successfully removed unpleasant odors from any toys? I have them in a bag with baking soda to see if it will absorb the stink. khonshu knight
On my experience leaving them out in the open for a while with enough space worked(at least with transformers it did) but I've also heard on leaving them in soap water for a few minutes and a quick rinse might also work. battlecat
Washing with soapy water worked for me on other toys, never had smokey mates before...
Rheul
Put them in a zip lock bag with a few dryer sheets. Works every time.
buttheadsmate
Put them in a zip lock bag with a few dryer sheets. Works every time. I have a separate 'smoked' section of my collection .....they stay outside in the porch looking forlorn in all weathers, growing old before their time & suffereing with stiff joints. Seriously,I bought a collection once & it completely wreaked of fags whoops sorry different meaning over here cigarettes & it was a devil of a job eliminating the smell. I eventually soaked them in a bowl of water containing a drop of lemon-juice...it worked a treat .
TM2 Dinobot
Frotunately I've never had this issue. There's nothing that smells quite as good as a fresh minimate.
MINI_MYTE
Have you tried bathing them? Sorry, couldn't pass up the opportunity. Edited January 28, 2012 by MINI_MYTE
gambitron
I also got an lot on ebay that came smelling like smoke. I left them out in the garage over night and it worked fine.
buttheadsmate
I guarantee one method of removing cigarette smells from Minimates........leave them in your unflushed toilet for a few days. I guarantee that they won't smell of cigarettes* when you fish them out. *obviously this doesn't work with 'Riot Spidey' ...usual reasons apply. Zombieboyfiend
unscent*ed* fabreeze on a cloth in a box with the minimates works for me. Just make sure not to let the Fabreeze and mates touch because i'm not sure if the chemicals with damage the paint or plastic. karamazov80
I can also vouch for the dryer sheet in a zip-loc bag method. Leave it in for about a week to be safe.
MsMarvel fan
Thanks for all the tips! I'm moving house today, and will try a method or two and let you know the results.
Lurch77
Put them in a zip lock bag with a few dryer sheets. Works every time. This works for me too. I've pick up toys from consignment and garage sales that had a lingering smell. A few days in the bag and they're right as rain.
MsMarvel fan
Because I had them buried in Baking soda, I had to wash them. It took a few washes as baking soda got in all the cracks and left a residue I couldn't see until it was dry. (And the stink is gone!) Next time I'll use a dryer sheet and save myself the hassle. thanks for all the suggestions!
TENIME_art
I got the coveted Mega Bloks Baxter Building set used, and it REEKS. I'm definitely afraid to put my Minimates on it. I can't wash the pieces, because of pre-applied stickers (and I have no idea where I'd get replacements). I'll try the dryer sheet/ziploc bag trick, thanks, guys. youbastards
Tenime, if the dryer sheets down't work and you have access to a flat bed scanner, you can always scan the stickers then print them out on a sticker sheet like decals. TENIME_art
Except for the translucent ones.
youbastards
Clear waterslide decals with some matte sealant applied to keep it in place should work fine for clear stickers.
Molybdenum Man
I just picked up a Crossbones / Secret War Cap from TRU. They reeked of VOCs - the first time I have ever seen this with 'mates. Has anyone else seen this (smelled this)? I'll try the dryer sheet method.

Pete
If you have smokey Minimates, start smoking and the smell won't bother you. Simples!
