The_Donster
I hear you guys when it comes to audio. The only reason I didn't get one was this was for the bedroom. When it comes to our family room or living room, that will be an entirely different story and I'll probable go a little higher end for those sets and systems. I'll check out Deadwood, but will most likely rent it. Funny thing about Bladerunner, I was actually looking at that set yesterday at Target. Right now it looks like Star Trek is on me and the mrs. must have. Another one I'm thinking about is Hellboy 2, which was a visually pleasing movie. Kind of bums me out that Del Toro won't be directing The Hobbit, but glad Jackson is instead. As far as the technology being obsolete in a few years, I'm also not concerned. While I do stream most of my shows through Netflix, the one's I buy will be keepers that I consistently watch.
buttheadsmate
I only have one reservation (check that avatar) about Deadwood & that is the language...... & I don't mean the ones on the DVD menu. I swear & curse but being the eternal hypocrite I actually frown upon bad language when confronted with it incessantly in a public place & my living room. My GF tolerates my tongue (careful you guys ) but let's me know when I cuss too much...my bad & my point is that 'Deadwood' is absolutely full on with the 'c*cks8cking' & the 'c%nt' flying....it is appalling. It is appalling but somehow justified & strangely enough after a while you just don't even notice it but when I first started watching Deadwood I felt uneasy . Damn I miss that show....Deadwood Minimates box sets 1 & 2 would have sold far better than some lines I can think of .
youbastards
You are 100% correct, the language is very offputting at first, but it is woven in to some of the most eloquent dialogue to ever grace a TV show, especially Swearengen's monologues and diatribes. I always thought it was funny that, despite being based on a real person, his name is "swear-engine".
karamazov80
It's like watching the Big Lebowski. I don't know if any other movie of the 1990s had more cussing, but I don't even notice it anymore (if I ever did). Sometimes, it just fits with the subject matter and isn't a huge deal. Maybe I'm just desensitized to it all across the board, though.
buttheadsmate
I recall watching 'Trains Planes & Automobiles' for the first time ,ending up absolutely weeping with laughter at this unexpected scene . When the film hit TV in the UK they dubbed/censored out the 'F' & it completely destroyed the scene & in many ways the whole film. Steve Martin has made some shite movies but not that one & there have been a couple of moments in my life that that scene almost prepared me for. 'Al Swearengen' recently appeared in 'Pillars of the Earth' & despite the fact he played a 12th. Century cardinal he still managed a "c %nt" or two. Hailed as a show that 'American audiences loved' fooled me into watching Pillars of the Earth ,especially as Mc.Shane was in it.......he was terribly miscast & it was awful . neolego
I have a modest Blu Ray collection, so I'll throw my hat into the game. On the TV side, LOST and Smallville on Blu Ray is nice, especially the last few seasons. Battlestar Galactica is probably my favorite TV set though! As for movies, there are so that are just most haves. The Dark Knight and Star Trek are simply the best Blu Ray transfers I have ever seen. Those two movies should be part of everyone's collection. As mentioned, Watchmen is a great transfer as well as Spider-Man 3 and X3 (of course, the latter two have nothing to do with MOVIE quality!). Iron Man 1 and 2 also look great as does the Pirates of the Carribean series, most impressive would be At World's End. Finally, just one word: Pixar. I have every Pixar Blu Ray released so far (Toy Story 1-3, Bug's Life, Cars, Monsters, Inc., Up, Wall.E, and Ratatouille) and every one is FLAWLESS! Also, the answer your question back a while ago, the main difference between VuDo and Netflix is that VuDo is only On-Demand (to my knowledge). That mean's it's streaming only, no physically DVD/BluRay sent to your home. It's also more expensive as you pay per movie, in HD is like $5 or $6 to rent. As opposed to a flat rate to watch as many as you like. However, the benefit is that you can get movies as soon as they are released with VuDo as opposed to several months later on Netflix. Again, you are paying more, but you have access to the movies earlier. As far as quality, I stream both VuDo and Netflix through my PS3 to my HDTV and both look great in 1080p and are instantly available, so I don't think quality is an issue either way. neo
karamazov80
Hailed as a show that 'American audiences loved' fooled me into watching Pillars of the Earth Though this may well be the case, I have never heard of it
youbastards
Same here, that was the first I had heard of it too, but then again it did air on Starz...
The_Donster
The recent conversation about cussing got me to thinking too. A show I kind of got into was Spartacus: Blood and Sand and I highly recommend it, but I thought the cursing was a bit over the top too. As the show and my wife pointed out though, cursing was a part of everyday life back during that time. I was actually surprised at my prudish behavior given the words that come out of my mouth. Of course with a little guy, I'm trying to clean up my act a bit. Back to topic, Neo, I heard the same thing from someone else on another board about Pixar stuff. I have noticed that animation really gives the picture a punch. Might see if I can get Lex to watch The Incredibles or Finding Nemo. He definitely liked seeing Elmo on the big screen. Might wait for the hype to die down or a great sale and pick up the Toy Story trilogy down the road. Another friend suggested The Godfather Part I and II. I'll probable rent those though. neolego
...Might see if I can get Lex to watch The Incredibles or Finding Nemo.... Just so you know, Both Nemo and The Incredibles has yet to be released. It is currently on the schedule for "Spring 2011", I would assume March as that is when Disney normally makes big releases. Currently those are the only 2 Pixar movies missing on Blu Ray. And if Lex hasn't seen Toy Story 3 yet, he will love it. It's the best of the Series, I took Kira and Cal to see it in 3D at the theater and they LOVED it! And I wasn't tearing up at the end, it was hayfever season...... neo
The_Donster
Nah, not yet. He's still young enough that he barely has enough attention for Sprout We have those 2 on dvd and are trying not to get anything that we already have on blu-ray just yet. Looks like Inception has made the list. Wondering if anyone is going to have any store exclusive contenton their disc? We missed watching that at theaters because we were at SDCC when it hit and don't think we can wait for Netflix to get it in January
minimadman
Inception is visually stunning & probably the best movie of this past summer. BTW I am currently really enjoying the Back to the Future Blurays. Edited December 1, 2010 by minimadman
The_Donster
Like James Bond, I'm glad I didn't pick these up when the boxed set hit. I just got Crazy Heart delivered from Netflix. So I guess that one will be our first blu-ray movie we play. Added Narnia and Hitchhiker's Guide to my que along with Dr. No. I want to see how some of the older movies look on blu-ray. I now the newer stuff looks spectacular or should, but I wonder about the transfer of movies that weren't digital?
buttheadsmate
I want to see how some of the older movies look on blu-ray. I now the newer stuff looks spectacular or should, but I wonder about the transfer of movies that weren't digital? As I said earlier everything that was filmed (in its literal sense) should transfer perfectly to any digital format, those shows that were not filmed ,but were videoed, will remain in an area that will, justifiably, be categorised as 'grey areas' because currently you can't enhance what isn't there. All the time I'm writing this I am specifically thinking of the 'X-Files' which unfortunately was videoed.
The_Donster
I hear you BHM. I'm currently watching the last disc of Highlander The Series Season 5 and feel the same way. The blu-ray cleans it up as best as they can, but it still looks a little fuzzy in some spots. I did a quick google search and apparently they weren't able to do a true 1080p on the blu-ray of the 1st few season Guess I'll be sticking with what I have for now. Gotta love these shows that were done on a shoe string budget.
The_Donster
Got a question about watching dvd's on my blu-ray. Got that awesome pixelated picture on the last disc I was watching. So I was wondering if anyone has run into this. Is this due to the quality of the disc, since I know Panzer-Davis doesn't put their best effort on there dvd's. I ran into this with a Venture Bros season dvd on my 360 back in the day, which is probable why I'm not stressing things too much. Going to watch Crazy Heart on blu-ray later and see if anything happens before I go into panic mode. I'm hoping it is just a glitch on the disc, not the player. I like having all of my components working off of 1 remote
The_Donster
WOW, amazing picture. Is this what it is like for people who get glasses? It is now so hard to watch tv down stairs now Really stellar colors and couldn't be happier. Thanks for your input on what to what, I'll check those out. The_Donster
Just traded my 3 disc version of Casino Royale for it's blu-ray counterpart last night. Looking forward to checking that out once I get the tv and sound bar on the wall With all the excitement of errands, our son's Santa photo's and a date with my wife, we forgot to do this and watch Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Haven't seen that since it originally hit cable and hope I like it better this time
youbastards
Casino Royale is stunning in Blu, but the opening title/music sequence particularly stands out.
The_Donster
Are you talking about the flashback scene or the chase scene? I haven't seen this since it came out in theaters. One thing I did read was the flashback scene is a bit hazy, but it is meant to be. Kind of wish Quantum of Solace 3 disc version would come out. Was almost ready to buy that one and heard some rumblings about that on one of the blu-ray forums. So I'm going to wait. Right now I'll just watch the Bond films on Netflix until the new one's hit. Since there are only a few I want to actually own
youbastards
I'm talking about , right after the flashback, with the opening song. It just looks beautiful in HD.
The_Donster
I have no doubt this will kick some ass on the disc. Chris Cornel amazes me still, such a rich voice. Which is probable why I want to wait until I have everything set up to watch this for the first time.
