entertheninja!
It seems Campbell is casting none other than Freddy/rorschach himself Jackie Earle Haley to play the villain Sinestro! I think it's great! Ryan reynolds and jackie earle Haley in a movie...sweet
karamazov80
I can't see it. Maybe old school Sinestro from the 60s, but not as the Sinestro from the more recent comics I've seen or the First Flight cartoon.
Mirymate
Yeah, this says a lot about the "feel" of the movie. Definitly going with a more SA tone... not that that would be a bad thing. I'd rather see a lighter, sci-fi adventure GL movie than some grim-and-gritty Dark Knight inspired take. Much like Reynolds, he wouldn't have been my pick, but I have no strong objections. gambitron
After seeing Haley in the movie Little Children I get creeped out every time I see him so I personally would prefer a different actor to be cast but that's just me.
minimadman
As much as I like Ryan Reynolds casting as GL I don't really like the idea of Jackie Earl Haley as Sinestro. His is lacking the physicality that the roll would require. Ryan Reynolds is 6'2 Jackie Earl Haley is 5'5.
karamazov80
I can see a smaller guy as Sinestro. Even a funny looking guy (he is an alien, after all). However, it is hard for me to imagine Haley as a proud, charismatic, potentially heroic, but ultimately disgruntled would-be tyrant. Weasely, traditional bad guy? Sure. But you know what? I'm gonna try to just drop all pre-conceived ideas with this movie. Ryan Reynolds as Hal is already going to require a huge leap from any expectations of what a Hal Jordan should be, so I'm just gonna try to roll with it. I'm certainly not expecting Nolan-level work here.

I think that he should be of a size to stand toe to toe with Hal. Reynolds could put his hand on the top of Haley's head and hold him at bay like a cartoon. Why is everyone so against Ryan Reynolds? That is great casting. I can not think of anyone i would rather see as Green Lantern. It was like when I heard Christian Bale was cast as Batman I knew immediately that it was a great decision. What should Hal be that you think Ryan Reynolds is not?
karamazov80
Well, I posted my feelings earlier in the general movie thread re: the Reynolds casting. I haven't seen him in a role that fits into my conception of Hal Jordan. Deadpool? A too bulky Wally West Flash? Booster Gold? Sure. But not Hal Jordan. I always read him as being a real "straight man," which Reynolds is not, IMO.

Hal is the cocky test pilot with nerves of steel but he is like a big kid always after the thrill.

Hal is cocky, brash, and can be sarcastic, all of which play to Reynolds' strengths. But Reynolds always struck me as more snarky than I see Hal. K80 is right, there's a Booster Gold quality to his usual roles. That said, Hal seems different depending on the company he's in. With Barry, he's the brash, arrogant risk taker to Barry's straight man. If Hal's with Ollie, then suddenly Hal's the straighter laced, cool headed one. With the GLC, he's the rebel who's been promoted to a leadership position and is uncomfortable with it. Yet with the Justice League, Hal wants to be the leader. So really, just about any interpretation of the character is justifiable.

Certainly, he seems to be the arrogant, reckless test pilot in his ret-conned early history (possibly even in his earlier comics--I haven't read them). But my impression of him from the 70s and 80s stuff that I read was more of a fairly vanilla character.
Twisted Two-Face
OH DEAR GOD WHY?! Why do they just LOVE to kill this movie?!?!?! Do they NEED it to have "younger audience appeal?!?!?!?!" Why do i say this?? Why that would be to the casting of Carol Ferris. If anyone recalls it was down to Eva Green ("Casino Royale"), Keri Russell (animated "Wonder Woman"), Diane Kruger ("Inglourious Basterds"), Blake Lively ("Gossip Girl") and Jennifer Garner ("Elektra"). Well, i for one really though Kruger had it in the bag; she IS Carol, the other choices were awful, and i love her. Wel, she didn't get it. Who did?? Blake. Lively. UGH. So, so, so, SOOOOO wrong for Carol Ferris.

Mirymate
Can't say I'm happy either, TTF, BUT remember Katie Holmes wasn't able to sink Batman Begins. Maybe Ms. Lively won't be enough to sink this one. That's Ryan Reynolds job.

I'm not that happy either, seems wrong for the film, but he's right it is just a film...Now I'm a fan of carol ferris, she is a great character;and their gonna screw her over in this film. But they screwed many of our favorite characters in films already, so ehh, there's always the comics and thats what counts!
karamazov80
I have no idea who this woman is, but she doesn't look like someone I would take very seriously. But when you think about it, how important is having a great actress as Carol Ferris? What characteristics does she need that require real acting chops? It isn't like she is playing an overly complex Jean Grey-type. She will probably only have a marginal role in the film, anyway. Like Miry suggests, I am much more worried about Reynolds. If he plays true to type, I don't know how I will feel about this movie.
minimadman
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PEOPLE RYAN REYNOLDS IS GOOD CASTING. WATCH SMOKING ACES. REYNOLDS HAS THE CHOPS TO BE HAL JORDAN. I'm sorry I yelled. That said I can not and will not vouch for Blake Lively.
karamazov80
I saw Smoking Aces a couple years ago (I think). . .honestly can't remember a thing about Ryan's performance Maybe that's good in the context of him taking the Hal Jordan role, though. minimadman
Just out of curiousity who is you think would be better than Reynolds in Green Lantern? I may react violently if one of you says Nathan Fillion.
The_Donster
Yeah, Nathan would be my first choice either and I'm willing to give Reynolds a chance.
minimadman
Yeah, Nathan would be my first choice either and I'm willing to give Reynolds a chance. I think had someone not made that fake trailer he would not even be given a passing thought and for good reason. I think that he's funny in Dr.Horrible but I don't really think that he's that great an actor. I'm not saying that Reynolds is the best actor ever but there is a reason one of them is a movie star and the other is not. Fillion is the new Bruce Campbell, he has a cult following but that's going to be as far as it goes.
The_Donster
Sorry, I meant wouldn't. I think he's a good actor, he just doesn't fit the mold of GL for me. Neither does Reynold's, but he's a bit closer to GL than ol' Mal Sometimes though, I wish they would just get unknown's to play parts. I definitely agree with this. Just look at Christopher Reeve, for God's sake. Quite frankly, no one has the chops to play Hal; while i'd hate to say this about a character i love dearly, Hal really is a "boring everyman." Reynolds is too much o an Ollie Queen, and Fillion, whle he would be a BETTER choice, isn't fit either. They needed to have gone for the "unkown" here, and it's a shame they didn't. So far every actor hasn't been right for the roles they've gotten, and it is really dissapointing.
Trekker 42
Though sometimes major actors ARE the way to go. I mean, look at everything Robert Downey Jr. has done in about a year or two. Gold. Even Tropic Thunder, which I overall HATED, I loved RDJ in it. And Norton was about as good a Banner as I've ever seen. And then you got Jeff Bridges, someone most everyone knows even if they don't know they do... Then again, you've got Chris Hemsworth as Thor. So honestly we'll have to see how that goes. But it seems that known actors do better for Marvel. At least so far
