Lobsterman
I really hope this isn't bad news for DC mates. We had a torrent this year, but the lack of any word on future waves for several months is a little unsettling in this context. It looks like DC is continuing to solicit "specialty" figures next year, like the urban vinyl Batman, and artist- and story-specific figures. Hopefully the Mattel license doesn't preclude the 2" scale, as Hasbro's Marvel license doesn't. Any insiders know anything?
Rad
Surely this is just for mainstream toy stores. I can't imagine DC Direct passing everything to Mattel.

We had a torrent this year, but the lack of any word on future waves for several months is a little unsettling in this context. If we don't get a solicitation next month for DC Minimates in March 2008, THEN I'll worry. Keep in mind what we already got this year was supposed to be released last year. I'd be thrilled if DCD decided to offer six series a year but it looks like they'll be offering three for 2008, just like they planned to do in 2006 and 2007. Personally I think they could ramp it up to four series a year without a problem. Toss in a couple boxed sets... But I really don't think Mattel has any interest in block figures. Hopefully that category wasn't part of the deal.

Nope, as Lego have that sewn up already. But yeah, the mass market versus the specialist market (the whole reason DC Direct exists) are entirely different things. DC Direct is DC, so they really can make whatever they want with their product, can't they?

DC Direct is DC, so they really can make whatever they want with their product, can't they? Depends on the license terms Deadpool. Years and years ago, Batman and Superman figures were only made by Hasbro. The license was given to them at a time before DC Direct existed. Hasbro had exclusive rights to make figures of those characters. That's why the first few years of DC Direct were Superman & Batman-less. Once the license went to Mattel, that restriction was lifted and DCD has pumped out wave after wave of SuperBat stuff ever since - with little else being made. Would they make the same/similar mistake again? I doubt it, but this is DC Direct we're talking about. With Georg Brewer at the helm, anything's possible.
