So far, so good. MJ's looking sweet. I'd really like to see one from the first film with sculpted nipples. I like that bulked-up Spidey, too. Tobey's not as lean as Spidey should be as far as I'm concerned so this one's more authentic to the source material. And I'm sure it reflects the power he feels with the symbiote.

I'd have been happy if DCD simply used most of the list of figures they've offered in their standard line but, hell, they seem to be going above and beyond that already. I woudn't be surprised to see Swamp Thing & John Constantine in the next series with Professor Zoom & Weather Wizard.

I just wanted to mention that I finally got the swag Adam mentioned a few months ago thanks to The Donster's mediation. Still wish things could have been handled differently from the start but I'm ready to move forward. I just hope my comrades are as satisfied with their consolation prizes as I am. Thanks again, Don, for the follow through. It paid off AND made my week.

Minimates were EVERYWHERE in this issue, particularly because this one featured Toy Fair coverage and they were all over the place there as well. My wallet aches.

I'll be shocked if it isn't the Defenders and sorely disappointed if I'm forced to add another Silver Surfer to my collection. (Not happy about the possibility of another petite Hulk either.)

A Legion/Fatal Five wave with Validus.

I've seen movies go through the development process before and this one hasn't hit any of the usual brick walls yet. If anything it's maintaining its stride. The script has been approved, it's got a greenlight from the studio AND a release date. Shooting is scheduled for this fall. I'm all for a lot of brainstorming, especially on a show like this. I'd be far more concerned if it was being rushed. I really don't expect the producers to allow the fans to be flies on the wall for every little decision. They've got to redesign the future, from sets to wardrobe, before filming can begin. There's a lot of pre-production work to be done. I'm sure we won't see a design for the Enterprise until it's finalized. That will likely be the single biggest announcement outside of casting. Again, I'm not without my concerns, and I could let those concerns undermine my enthusiasm for this project, but the fact that Paramount is finally giving fresh blood carte blanche to offer a reimagining has me brimming with hope. And hope is what Star Trek is all about.

This topic might be better served in a neutral forum. We know DST can't/won't do this with Marvel but there's nothing to stop DC Direct from doing a Legion of Super-Heroes wave that includes parts for a Colossal Boy or a Doom Patrol wave with Elasti-Girl.

I'm seriously hoping they go ALL the way back and include Pike as Captain of the Enterprise. If need be they can promote Kirk by the end of the movie but I'd love to see the original "Number One" as well. That's what excites me about this the most; the possibility of seeing so many characters share screentime in ways only clichéd time travel could have in Trek's previous incarnation. That said, I have some reservations about big names playing these venerable roles. I think the last thing ANY fan wants is to see this franchise relaunched as a parody. I have no reason to believe that's what the producers have in mind – they seem like rabid Trekkies themselves even if they aren't purists – but I want to see Kirk on screen, not Matt Damon doing his best Shatner as Kirk impression. Clearly there are a lot of fine lines here but I'm going to remain optimistic that these guys have enough respect for the source material not to seriously fuck things up. And if they do, I'll be fanning the shitstorm of protest along with a few others.

Greed is what brought Trek to the big screen in the first place. I truly believe that was a mistake. Had it been up to me (and my Tardis) Star Trek would have simply continued on the small screen in 1978 as intended. Yeah, you might not have had Spock in the beginning but I have every reason to believe that might have changed. You'd also have had new characters with a common setting, the U.S.S. Enterprise. But most importantly it would not have divided the fanbase the way so many spin-offs did. TNG, VOY, and ENT did not need to be seperate shows. "Star Trek" should have been allowed to evolve as a TV series the same way others do; maintain the core mission statement but don't be afraid to rotate cast members out as needed. If The Shatner wants out of the series after a couple seasons, promote Kirk to Admiral and put Picard or Janeway or Archer in the center seat. If certain characters are getting a little long in the tooth to believably still be at the same station after 15 years, reassign them. There are ways to keep the show fresh without reinventing the wheel every seven years. The lone exception is DS9. That show was a true spinoff. It was too different to fit the original mission statement and really needed to stand on its own.

This is awesome news. I've been waiting to read the word "reimagining" since the project was announced! I'm all for leaving old Trek (and narrow-minded Trekkies) behind. This franchise needs to be reintroduced to a much broader audience without the restrictions of such an anal-retentive, fractured fanbase obsessed with nitpicking continuity errors spanning 40 years. My only issue remains that this is a theatrical endeavor rather than a television project. Hopefully this will spin-off a TV series based on the movie. The thought of seeing Trek's most popular characters brought back to life is very exciting.

I've never been into Lego sets (though my son certainly is). The only thing MegaBloks has to offer me are the building façades like this one that make instant dioramas for my Minimates. Those are acceptable.

With some licensors, it's all semantic. You can have two companies producing the same product under different agreements. For instance Manufacturer A could sell "Spider-Man Stickers with Pencils" under their Stickers contract while Manufacturer B could offer "Spider-Man Pencils with Stickers" under their Pencils contract. And because they both use the same style guides, there's a good chance the product will look very similar. Also, not every agreement is exclusive. It's less expensive for a manufacturer to hold a non-exclusive contract, meaning the licensor could offer the same license to the competition at will concurrently. Other contracts are defined by market, so that a Marvel licensee like DST could sell to the specialty market but stays away from the mass market dominated by Hasbro. There are ways around this. It just depends on how badly DST wants to do this product. But hell, if they're offering Ghost Rider...

As a licensing professional of over 15 years as well as a Marvel licensee, I have to say this announcement does NOT preclude Minimates based on the Iron Man and Hulk movies. Marvel is notorious for splitting hairs when it comes to product categories. If Hasbro and DST can both offer Marvel action figures, I see no reason why DST can't offer Minimates even though another manufacturer has the rights to construction sets. It's also worth mentioning that the Iron Man and Hulk movie properties are included in the overall Marvel agreement. Usually they're licensed seperately but it seems that Marvel is following WB's lead in that they offer every aspect of a character under their brand umbrella; comic, cartoon, and cinema. If DST has renewed thier contract, they might already have rights to these two properties.

Good news! My wife and her nephew graduated high school together. (His mother and my mother are the same age.) Isn't math fun?!

Good ideas. I was having trouble justifying the $90 price tag for seven figures. (Almost $13 a 'mate!) But I'm forgetting the nice thing about properties like this and Star Trek is the army building potential thanks to so many characters in uniform. The customizability of Minimates only makes it easier. Now I just need a second job.

I was hoping the helmets would be molded in a colored, translucent plastic and painted. I'd prefer a visor. Otherwise I'm thinking about asking my retailer to order a case just so I can get a set with the chase, but what the heck am I going to do with the rest?

If the Kellogg's 'mates were scratch & sniff, I'd agree. THAT would be inspired.

Personally I think Voyager should have been the sixth season of TNG. I can totally understand the love-hate thing with DS9 among Trekkies because it was so different, but VOY was just TNG with a different cast in a prolonged story arc. Worst finale ever as well.

I'd have preferred to wait a lot longer as well, if only to give the purists time to die off and build up demand with everyone else. Reideen, my favorite Trek was DS9 because it was so anti-Trek. BSG gives me the same vibe but with much more interesting production qualities, from set design and visual effects to cinematography and musical score. I'm hoping to see some of that in Abrams' Trek but I'm not holding my breath.
