Pwime
Hey guys - been lurking a little while, and I finally decided to try my hand at a custom of my own. I didn't feel like spending a ridiculous amount for a Batman on eBay, so I opted to make my own - using a Protector as a base, Scarlet Witch cape, and an obscene amount of Apoxie. Considering this is the first time I've ever sculpted/customized a figure, I have to say I'm pretty pleased with how the apoxie accessories/details turned out, as well as the chest sticker. The problem was the paint - the grey paint on the body, in particular. Certain parts came out really smooth, whereas others bear some really ugly and obvious brush marks and bubbles. All the paint was the same consistency - very slightly watered down, two coats. the legs and knees turned out fine for the most part, but the arms are awful - cracking on the joints even though i kept moving them throughout the drying period and chipping off everywhere else. I'm wondering if it would be best to just remove the paint from problem areas and start over at this point? Anyone have any tips? I also designed the figure to have removable parts, like the old Batman minimates, in order to alternately display as a grey-suited Bruce Wayne - but the paint chipping is pretty bad in certain areas when removing the accessories. Would a spray can clear coat help, or is the figure doomed either way? I'm using citadel paints because, well...they're pretty awesome. emperorshotz
Hey, man. Welcome! Love what you've done here. As far as the paint chipping, a topcoat to protect would definitely help. I wouldn't say this figure is anywhere near doomed. You could also try finding cheap figures with grey parts/arms and try to match as close as possible, then paint the citadel grey over and then topcoat/seal. That way, even if minor chipping happens, it's not as noticeable. Hope that helps and great job!!
Shogi
Like emperor said, I'd try finding grey parts. I typically try to not paint joints when I can. Otherwise, this is a great custom! The chest looks awesome!
Pwime
Thanks for the tips guys. I'll have to check the stores to see if there are any Grey mates I could use. And I'll make sure I grab that topcoat.
Pwime
Sculpted entirely out of apoxie. Each piece is independent and removable, not sculpted directly onto the figure. While there is still work to be done on the sculpts, I don't plan on painting these at all until I've cast them - a process I'm still trying to learn. Comments, crits? homestar17
Everything looks fantastic!! Please keep us updated on the progress of both. I'm still sad that we never saw Igor as a minimate.
