The Decade in Film

Yeah I know this is the Oscar's job. But frankly I do not like the Academy. So instead, let's rate the 2000s ourselves. 3 categories: Best Film, Best Hero, Best Villain. Each year gets one. Start at 2000 and go to 2009.

I'll start off.

Best Movie of 2000: X-Men

Best Hero of 2000: This goes to three guys who couldn't have made it alone: The Soggy Bottom Boys (O Brother Where Art Thou?)

Best Villain of 2000: Magneto (X-Men)

Best Movie of 2001: the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Best Hero of 2001: Shrek (Shrek)

Best Villain of 2001: Saruman (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring)

Best Movie of 2002: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Best Hero of 2002: Spider-Man (Spider-Man)

Best Villain of 2002: The Man (Undercover Brother). Yes. I'm joking. Tom Riddle (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets)

Best Movie of 2003: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Best Hero of 2003: Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl)

Best Villain of 2003: Bill (Kill Bill Vol 1)

Best Movie of 2004: Spider-Man 2

Best Hero of 2004: The Bride (Kill Bill Vol 2)

Best Villain of 2004: Doctor Octopus (Spider-Man 2)

Best Movie of 2005: Batman Begins

Best Hero of 2005: Batman (Batman Begins)

Best Villain of 2005: The Tripods (War of the Worlds)

Best Movie of 2006: The Prestige

Best Hero of 2006: James Bond (Casino Royale)

Best Villain of 2006: The Motherfucking Snakes on the Motherfucking Plane (Joking again.) Robert Angier (The Prestige) (Villain Status arguable but doesn't stop him from being a total asshole)

Best Movie of 2007: (Slim pickings) Ratatouille

Best Hero of 2007: Optimus Prime (Transformers)

Best Villain of 2007: Professor Dolores Jane Umbridge (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)

Best Movie of 2008: The Dark Knight

Best Hero of 2008: Iron Man (Iron Man)

Best Villain of 2008: I'd be doing the world a disservice if I didn't say The Joker (The Dark Knight)

Best Movie of 2009: Star Trek

Best Hero of 2009: Harry Potter (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince)

Best Villain of 2009: (Again, this is personal opinion. I doubt many of you will agree)

Oh dear heavens. I don't believe I have that long a memory

Really though it's not surprising how hard it is to pin down this decade's epic wins. The fact that we've seen movies like A Scanner Darkly, Dawn of the Dead, WALL-E and the formerly-unfilmable Watchmen all come out the past 5 years alone says a lot about how insane a decade this had been for movies.

A bit of an aside for 2008's best villain though: While it would probably go without saying that the Joker would top the list, as far as runner-ups go I'm torn between Harvey Dent (though he seems more anti-hero than villain to me) and, believe it or not, Emil Blonsky. I've only watched the Norton Hulk movie very recently and I was actually amazed at how fleshed out Blonsky was as a character kinda.

I would also like to give a special citation to the Harry Potter franchise just for the sheer smorgasbord of top-tier actors who have frolicked about in them. Gary Oldman! Alan Rickman! Maggie Smith! Robbie Coltrane! Imelda Staunton! Helena Bonham-Carter! Ralph Fiennes! Even David frickin' Tennant!

And for my really weird picks for best hero, for 2004 I liked Sonny from I, Robot (by far one of the few bright spots in that movie), and for 2009 I'm inclined towards Tom from 500 Days Of Summer if only due to the baffling number of people I know who all relate to him for some reason.

Yeah Harvey is definately an Anti-Hero. I equate him to a much better acted Ghost Rider. Both basically kill. Both live outside the law. And both can be considered criminals for the greater good.

He's an anti-hero. Though a hell of a good one.

Now Sonny is NOT a weird pick at all. I thought he was an EXCELENT hero. Just not quite up there to beat out whoever I put for his year. He was 2004 I believe... Yeah. He's not quite The Bride.
