Looking for some computer help.

Just in case anyone here can offer some advice, Ithought I'd ask since my normal computer guy has been busy for awhile. For some reason, my cumputer is no longer accessing anything plugged into the USB ports. It recognizes flashdrives, cameras and MP3 players, but it won't interact with them. We recently had to scrap everything on our computer and use the recovery disks and reload the drivers and afterward we lost access to anything plugged in (I can plug my MP3 in and it won't even charge it). Is there an easy fix for something like this given the little amount of info I've given here? Just curious if there's something obvious I'm missing.

Q: How do you know if someone is a Mac user?

A: They will tell you.... :)

Sounds like either a driver needs to be loaded, or there is a problem with the USB Bus hardware. Was it working fine before you ran the system restore? If so, sounds like you might need to reload a USB driver from the MFG website. You can also try running Windows Updates and see if it finds any other hardware drivers that are missing.

You can tell if you are missing any drivers by right clicking on 'My Computer' (or just "Computer" if Windows 7) and clicking 'Manage'. Go to 'Device Manager' and see if there are any devices listed with yellow exclamation marks.

Good one YB  I definitely get frustrated when you need computer advice a mac person say the same thing, "Buy a Mac" :verymad: While I'd love to, it isn't in the cards right now. Hope you don't mind me piggy backing on your thread groundhog7s, but I've got a question. Seems everytime I get on my computer it makes a funny(mwamwa)noise like something is clicking on? Now I do have my wireless printer set up on it and it seems the only thing that would be making that noise to me. Any thoughts?

You mean aside from the cooling fan kicking into gear? (this lap top I'm on now, the fan is just a tiny bit out of balance anymore and makes a heck of a lot of moise when it first starts running hard) Could be the hard drive, some of those get louder as they get older. Is there actual "clicking" or just the "mwamwa" noise? Is the noise consistent the whole time you are using the machine or does it die down after a while?

So, juniorhog, what did your little angels do to your computer? I ask as a parent of two brilliant boys who've already cost me a powersupply, a hard drive, 2 complete system restores, and the rewiring of a room.

No, it isn't the fan or the startup sound it would make when waking up after hibernation. This sound comes from the monitor and I've yet to work it out Mirymate.

One of my older boys uninstalled something last October (he thought he was uninstalling something other than what he did). He broke the general rule of don't do anything on the computer other than look at the sites we've allowed him to look at. We lost the internet and a few other programs and never figured out what he got rid of. We started using a backup computer that he then got a virus on by breaking the same rule. The virus messed up our anti-virus and made it so we kept getting more viruses. We finally had to stop using that one and I used the recovery disc on our original one to start fresh. We reloaded everything we had discs for, but it's just not working right. There are certain programs we could access before, but can't now without getting an error message. My advice is either don't have kids or, if that's not an option any more, find a way to keep their access to only a few sites that you can moniter when they're on them. Or I also have a friend of mine that is redoing our backup computer so that it doesn't really store data (I think he said it involved Linux maybe?) so that there's not much that site can access (I'm mostly computer illiterate, so I'm not sure I explained it correctly).

Something like this happened to me too.A friend of mine(no longer a friend, the same backstabbing "thing" who left alone to get through the 3 days of the school trip alone) downloaded left 4 dead 2 and gave it to me .When i run the game the screen flashed and weird porn started appearing. Then i saw that he had downloaded the game from a site called gaypirate.Well i tried to delete the icons for these porn webites but they never left.Things got even worse when the pc couldn't stay on for 5 minutes.Eventually we gave it to a technician to repair it and the whole story costed about 600 euros. Now my parents use it while i use my gaming laptop.
