  1. Thanks for the support, folks! It's nice to see that thread getting bumped to the top of the forum by collectors as passionate about the line as I am.

While Brewer's comment wasn't unilaterally negative, it didn't exactly fill me with warm fuzzies. I know sales are the final determining factor in a business but the DCD board is in some ways their focus group. I LOVE the diversity of the line and can't imagine a character they'd offer I wouldn't be happy to add to my collection but obviously some will be more popular than others.

That's where I think they could use our input. Keep it coming from time to time, even if you're just copying from here and pasting there. It can't hurt and it'll show the line has a larger online support than the half-dozen regular DCD posters.

    You guys rock!

  2. Are pre-orders for the boxed sets any better than the 2-pack cases? And if so, would you consider releasing Minimates EXCLUSIVELY as boxed sets as you have with 24, Lambs, BTTF...? (I'm so done "chasing" figures. It's nice to simply buy the ones I want with no worries about the secondary market.)

  3. As was mentioned in this previous thread, DC Minimates seem to be a bit of a disappointment from Georg Brewer's point of view. As stunning as the line is to us collectors, that doesn't seem to be translating in terms of overall sales or perhaps recent pre-orders.

Personally, I'm buying them all and have been making an effort to preach to the non-converted over at DC's message board. What concerns me is that Brewer may not be aware of this community and its passion for what DCD's been offering.

I'm also worried that DC may be putting too much effort into this line at times. Case in point; I didn't really need that skull with the Grodd 'mate. It ended up just being confusing as to what the hell it's for. I'm sure that cost money to produce, money that could have just as well gone to Brewer's bottom line and wouldn't have been missed by collectors at all.

What I'm getting at is that I'd like Mr. Brewer to read our comments and I don't think he's doing that here. I know he reads the DCD board even though he doesn't participate (at least he doesn't admit to it). I'm inviting everyone to register over there and post your comments in this thread – for better or worse – if only so Brewer can see some activity in that topic beyond my own occasional reviews and a bit of banter between the usual handful of suspects.

This is a fun line and I'd like to see it go on for a loooong time. If that means costs have to come down and accessories need to be cut, let's let DCD know what we can live without. If we've got ideas about how to make the hobby more exciting, share 'em with DCD. I know that Jim Beard has asked certain questions specifically on behalf of this community (thank you, Mr. Beard!). Let's at least meet DCD halfway by making our voices heard on their own turf. I'm not asking for regular, day-to-day participation (that's what this place is for), just a surge of posts when waves are announced and released to let DCD know we're here and how much we love their product.

    Thanks and Happy Valentine's Day!

  4. Between losing my power, losing my internet, and getting evicted from my home I think i'm doing better now.

You had a power? What was it?

Anyway, a wish for a happier (and luckier) new year to you!

  5. I wanna write this episode:

    ENTERPRISE - BRIDGE

Scotty and Uhura step out of the turbolift. The rest of the bridge crew are at their stations.

Scotty: Captain, we're havin' a wee bit of a problem with the new transporters.

Kirk spins around in his chair, concerned.

Kirk: Don't tell me we've melted another Vulcan, Mr. Scott!

Scotty: Oh, NO, sir! It's more of a... well... maybe Lt. Uhura should just show you.

Uhura: [turning around and pointing to her back] LOOK AT THESE!

    Spock: [eyebrow raised] Indeed.

Kirk: [surpressing a grin] MISTER Scott! A word with you, please!

    Scotty approaches the command chair.

Kirk: [in a low voice to Scotty] Apply this upgrade to all the other transporters immediately. And by the way... can you get them to grow hair?

  6. Looks like more Minimates will be invading the Star Trek universe in 2008, including the very first Star Trek box set featuring five all-new Trek Minimates!

    "Invading?"

Okay everyone, pick your five most-wanted Trek alien adversaries. Here are mine:

    Romulan

    Klingon

    Andorian

    Borg

    Cardassian

  7. This from Trekker42 puzzled me ...

"Will Star Trek wave four enter into the Next Generation?

DSTChuck: No it will not but TNG and the other series are NOT going to be ignored we’ve got stuff underway already."

So what's being alluded to in the last DST e-spectrum? Everyone thought it would be TNG but it appears not to be so.

I'm gonna go with the DS9 crew in TOS outfits from "Trials & Tribble-ations." That'd be a nice segue into the 24th century... and one DST has exploited before.

  8. Mr PL played a Dabo Girl. Who'd a thunk it?

If by "played" you mean "met and drooled over," then yes, absoLUTEly I played one. :woot:

Thats cool MPL. I hope you can eventually get your hands on that costume. Its a great story.

I cry whenever I think how little that thing went for. I coulda had it for less than $200. :(

  9. Now that you're moving on to the 24th century of Star Trek Minimates, could you make one of me? Please? I know, I was only on DS9 for a few seconds but I thought I made a pretty cool alien.

Here are some costume references for you (No, I didn't win the auction. I didn't even get to bid because I didn't realize my costume was going up for auction).

Here are some headshots. If you need any additional design direction, I'd be glad to help.

    Thanks,

    MisterPL

  10. IMO its quite a nice redesign, and I dont mind the addition of a gun, after all you americans like your guns :P

Sir, that is a stereotype. The truth is that we Americans fucking LOVE our guns. So there.

My first reaction to the suit was, "What's with Captain Slippery? Damn, that thing's glossy! How many coats of lacquer did it need?"

I'm sure the armor tunic is made up of some "next generation micro/nano-armor plating" that moves like vegetable oil on a stripper but protects like Superman's Speedo™.

It's one of the better redesigns I've seen.

    It'll make a nice Minimate.

  11. As fun as mixed waves would be, I have to agree with Reideen that themed waves make more sense.

Themed waves wouldn't bother me but so far the entire LINE has been themed TOS to the exclusion of every other incarnation of Trek out there. Had the first series featured characters from TNG, followed by TOS, and then DS9 or ENT, I wouldn't be complaining. (Well, not about this.) My biggest concern is consumer perception; that this line is TOS-only, just like the last 3-inch incarnation. That didn't last long either.

Hell, I could see fans who loathe TOS picking up those figures if only to make quick customs like Sisko & Company from Trials & Tribble-ations. Unfortunately without 'mates of Sisko, Dax, Bashir and O'Brien, that's not as likely.

  12. So your proposal would be that it's better to sell 1 pack out of the series to an individual, rather than the entire series? IMO that would potentially leave reatailers with pegwarmers galore and would 'make an impression that Star Trek Minimates don't sell well'. ;)

My position is that it's better to sell a myriad of product to several consumers than one product to one consumer. Something about putting all your eggs into one basket or – God forbid – that one consumer dying.

I can only speak from my perspective as a (former) comic shop owner. I'd rather sell the entire wave to someone than sell them in ones & twos. I'd be much more apt to buy another case in the future if my sell thru was quick and painless. Pegwarmers is not quick and painless.

    (I think I can see why Reideen's a former comic shop owner. :P )

To Trekkies who aren't TOS fans, every series of Minimates so far is a pegwarmer. It's all about perspective. You've got to look at the big picture and be objective.

Like Star Wars, Star Trek has a significant generation gap that cannot be ignored. There are fans who grew up on the modern versions and have little or no interest in the "old stuff." I found it interesting that even when you used my Star Wars analogy, you ignored the prequels, which have been a significant source of revenue for Hasbro and other Star Wars licensees over the last eight years. You're startin' to look like a biased old codger, Reideen. ;)

I just think it's as much a mistake to only offer TOS product as it would be for a comic shop to only offer Superman titles.

(Before you ask why I wouldn't buy the proposed waves, I'm not a 'Trek fan' - I'm a very casual Trek collector. I'm only going to buy the few that I want. I'm one of those who would have quit collecting when Ult Xmen was done. That said, does it make my points any less vaild? I hope not...)

There are a lot of niche collectors. Some just want characters from their favorite show, some just want those from movies, others may simply want captains or aliens. To paraphrase Spock, DST should be catering to the needs of the many, not the few.
