  1. Does anyone know if the iron monger suit (or whatever the villian in the movie) is represented akin to his comic visualization. As well as the pepper pots girl.

Not really and no. Iron Monger was basically a really big version of the Iron Man armor. It looked basically like the original armor on Steroids. Check out Iron Man #200 for more.

Pepper Potts was/is a redhead with freckles. She looks nothing like Gwyneth Paltrow (not that it's a big deal). Incidently, I think that's the first time in my life I ever typed "Gwyneth". It's an unnatural word to spell.

Or possibly the two most voted upon DC characters not yet made.

That... is a staggeringly good idea. I call Martian Manhunter and Two Face!!

  2. Hey guys, quick question: AFX has this listed as an exclusive after NYCC. Of course, they've also had other items that were "exclusive" that were readily available on other sites, for less money. Doesn anyone know if this is the case for this set as well, or is AFX indeed the only game in town?

The short answer is that these are AFX exclusive in that AFX & DST worked together to bring you this set and no one else will have them initially.

However, what seems to happen is that if AFX has surplus stock after a while they talk to Diamond and have them solicited in Previews and that's how they get a wider distribution.

    T.

I see... so the best/only place to get these quickly and inexpensively is probably AFX.

  3. The fact that this can just as easily fit in with the comic book mates adds to the likelihood of this set seeing production.

That's true. In fact, I was kinda surprised when I saw modern Iron Man in the Civil War box set, because I was planning on getting the movie one and using him as MIM. The fact that I can also easily make a Tony Stark with that head and an existing body makes my need for the IM movie mates all the smaller. I wish they had not put IM in the Civil War set, and subbed in someone like Speedball or Captain Marvel.

  5. For Reideen...

They look like they're going to break into song....

I was on the fence about this set, but these look pretty great. I'm most excited to be able to make a Tony Stark Custom, probably using the 24 Tony Almeda body.

  6. I was at my local FYE last night, and they had dropped the prices on their Minimates, as well as most of the toys they carry (ironically this only brought their Marvel Legends prices in line with every other retailer, since they were so high to begin with). This included BSG Wave 2, The Spidy 5-pack, and both the 24 and Marvel FYE exclusives. I do know that some FYEs carry DC 'mates, but I don't know if they also saw a price drop. Anyway, FYE does this periodically, which is why I almost never buy anything I find there at full price. It's a good chance to pick up some sets you may be on the fence about, or custom fodder.

  7. I think your analysis is right on, Captain. I would guess that DST was hoping to reach out to stores beyond comic book shops that also carry collectibles, like FYE, Spencer's, ect. But with 24 failing, I can't really see there being much hope for 'Mates like this in the future. 24 is a very high profile show with a devoted fan base, and is probably the most recognizable Minimate property after Marvel, DC and Star Trek. I'd even place it ahead of BSG, which is more of a cult program. Yet 24 mates failed to catch on. Who knows, perhaps the expectations were too high?

  8. I'm most disappointed that they didn't get to do that cool corduroy hoodie that Jack wore in Season 5 :( . Oh well.

Honestly, even as a fan of the show, I was only really into these to use as custom pieces. So I can't say that I'm all that upset. Still, I don't think this bodes well for the chances of getting other TV 'Mates made. If 24 didn't do well, I can't imagine what else would, outside of Lost.

  9. My impression is that the introduction of the DC Minimates line caused a change for the better in the product. The figures became more varied and interesting, working in parts that showed different size and excellent accessories. Maybe my feel for the timeline is off, but it felt like the Marvel stuff was getting to be a little of the same old and then the DC stuff came along and raised the bar. And now the Marvel stuff has become more interesting, like the wave with Ultron and Mysterio in it. It's a true shame to see DC Minimates end, as they were great and there were so many more possibilities. I guess not being sold at regular retail killed them. Why weren't they in Target, etc.? And is the end of the Marvel line far behind? :(

DC Direct only solicits to shops that carry collectibles. That's why you can find them in places like FYE.

What I don't understand is why DST doesn't try to negotiate to pick up the DC Minimates license if DCD doesn't want to distribute them anymore. Perhaps they are in too much direct competition?

  10. Another easy change I've done is to update Sue Storm a bit by using a more modern face and hairstyle for her.

Man tell me about it! I HATE that 60' hairdo they put on Sue! I tried the newer Emma Frost hair piece which looks ok. But I would really to get Six's hairpiece for her.

i used dc's power girls hairpiece

I've used that one as well. If you have the transforming Human Torch one, that hair actually works really well. That hair make for good male hair. I have an extra PG, and I have it earmarked for an eventual Quasar custom. Or Kurt Cobain, whichever I try first. :D

  11. She could also be changed into the Savage She Hulk pretty easily, by painting the hair green or putting Shulkie's hair on her.

Another easy change I've done is to update Sue Storm a bit by using a more modern face and hairstyle for her. I switched her head with Wonder Woman's, and was really happy with the result; I also used the blond hair from the BSG Gina figure. I'll try to post pics when I have a chance.

One more: I hate the hair that comes with Wonder Man, so I subbed the hair from a BSG Gaius and it looks much much better.

  12. Hey there, it's my first post. I've also been trying to track down Nick Fury, with much difficulty. I finally found him for a really good price here:

    http://www.brianstoys.com/store/cart.aspx

He hasn't arrived yet, so I'm a little worried this may be one of those "mistakenly not listed as out of stock."

By the way, SHIELD agents normally wear blue and red uniforms, not blue and white. So it's kinda an inaccurate custom.

I sent them an email asking if they had them in stock, and i got a response saying that they are. So, I ordered four at .46 each! My total was nine dollars with shipping, and thats how much one loose fury goes for on ebay!

Wow... I paid like a buck fifty, and I got ripped off!

It looks like they are finally out of that set... weird that they would have them for so low, when every other store (that has them) has that set for a pretty high price. Glad we could take advantage!

  13. Figured I might as well do a list. I decided, rather then list characters, to list two-packs I'd like to see. In no particular order:

    -Black Panther (classic costume!)/ Klaw

    -Moon Knight/ Werewolf by Night

    -Captain Marvel/ Adam Warlock

    -Black Bolt/ Medusa

    -Captain Britain/ the Black Knight

    -Quasar/ Kang

    -Hellcat/ Nighthawk

    -Yellowjacket/ the Wasp

    -the Shocker/ Electro

    -Black Widow/ Hydra agent

Box set: The Squadron Supreme: Hyperion, Power Princess, Spectrum, Whizzer, and Nighthawk

  14. Or you could have a big pack with all the metal men, and a Oolong Islang set with Doc Magnus, Egg Fu, Dr. Sivana, and T. O. Morrow.

A Minimate Egg-Fu would blow my mind. I can't even imagine how to make him work with existing Minimates parts...

I guess you'd start with a hard boiled egg....

  15. I can't see how this would be successful. Minimates have a built in name and audience; why DCD would think they could do things better then Art Asylum is beyond me. I remember looking at Pocket Superheroes and thinking "what's the point? They should just do Minimates."

    Maybe they'll do DC Shockinis!!!!

  16. I might add, I DO have access to the Variants and I have them all. It's cool to be able to say that, but for those that can't and want them, it kinda sucks. I work at a shop and I can tell you that, we sell more DC minimates then Marvel. I do believe the variants and lack there of have an effect on it.

Interesting, since the only real reason for variants is to drive up interest in the line. I do think that people tend to get so caught up in hunting for variants that they sometimes skip over the basic figures. My own feeling is that variants should never be a unique character. They're more trouble then they are worth.

  17. "Previously on 'Kubrick Talk'...."

I wonder if there's a Kubrick fan site where everybody talks about how they hate those Doctor Who Minimates....

Does anyone know what that accessory with Hurley is? Is that a scale?! Did they give him a scale because he's the fat guy? Jeez Louise....

Looks like a CD player to me!

    T.

That certainly makes more sense, though he needs headphones....

  19. I just spent the weekend rewatching Arrested Development, and I would LOOOOOOOOVE some minimates! Even my wife would like to see these!

    Series 1:

    Michael and GOB Bluth

George Michael Bluth and Maybe Funke (Variant: Banana Stand George Michael!)

    Buster and Lucielle Bluth

    Lindsay and Tobias Funke

:) I loved this show, but thanks to you I now have that annoying themetune running round my head.

I think the Variant should be BlueMan group Tobias though :)

    "[Tobias has painted himself blue]

    Tobias Funke: I blue myself.

Michael Bluth: There has got to be a better way to say that. "

    T.

That's going to be in Wave 2 ;)

    And I like that song!

Ha! Great idea. GOB so needs his scooter. And a dead pigeon. And Franklin. Really, I wouldn't mind if GOB were packed alone with crap loads of accesories so as to recreate some minimate magic. I'm sorry, illusions.

Of course, we would also need Barry Zuckerkorn, Steve Holt, Bob Loblaw, Ann, Annyong, Kitty, Carl Weathers, Larry Mittleman, Rita Leeds, Maggie Lizer... my god, I need these. I need these now. First 3 series of my dream line:

    Series 1

    Michael and GOB

    Buster and Lucille Austero

Lindasy and Tobias/ Blue Man Tobias variant

Exclusive: Tony Wonder with giant bread

    Series 2

Lucille and George Bluth/ Oscar variant

    Barry Zukerkorn and Bob Loblaw

    Maeby and Steve Holt

Exclusive: Lupe with rack of fur coats

    Series 3

Ann and George Michael/ banana stand variant

    Carl Weathers and Mrs. Featherbottom

Wayne Jarvis and Wife of GOB

    Exclusive: Mr Bananagrabber with scooter

Dude, that tops mine (although I'd also thought of the Mr. Bananagrabber exclusive). The funny thing with AD 'Mates is that I can't think of any other Michaels. I can come up with variants for just about everyone else (Magic Show GOB, Army Buster, "Gengie" Lucielle, Never Nude Tobias, ect) but Michael is basically in a suit or in casual wear. Because you need to do a second Michael, to go with Rita (and a Maggie Lizer variant).

  20. While I would be behind the boxset idea...hell its minimates so of course I would but it pretty much would drown the idea of getting the one DC character I really want and thats the Jack Knight Starman

    Jeff of the Miniacs

Nahh... he could easily be included in a JSA box (he was a member for a brief period of time, after all), or a Zero Hour box (Extant and Primal Force, anyone?). I suspect you can probably make a pretty good quick custom of him too.
