  1. I still think Takara does the best MP styled figures out there, but some 3rd party outfits certainly rival them now.  Particularly Fanstoys, and to a lesser extent Ocular Max and DX9.  But Takara can't keep up with the demand.  Very few original, G1 MP molds nowadays.  Nothing even announced since Sunstreaker, I don't think.  But major omissions like Jazz, Trailbreaker, and many. . er, minibots.

  2. I'm sad to say that I didn't even know who Abominus or Rippersnapper were before googling!  Abominus looks like an evil, more flamboyant Superion.  And that's not a bad thing.

For my collection, there's really nothing out there on the combiner front that I feel compelled to buy.  I'm very, very interested in Fanstoys' Superion project though, and hope the Constructicons are up in the next. . .few years or so.  Takara doesn't seem brave enough to try an official, Masterpiece combiner.

  3. Good luck!

I kept hemming and hawing about going after nice, third party, masterpiece-styled dinobots.  And when I finally decide to track them down, some are really hard to find at a remotely reasonable price.  But apart from shiny gold vs. yellow, these Fanstoys figures look like they jumped off the TV screen in the way that other MP figures do.  I really dig them.  I've got Stomp (Sludge) and Perfect Fusion Cesium (Slag) on the way.  And I've also got a scaled up, MP-08 Grimlock on pre-order, which should be a nice stand in until/unless Fanstoys Grinder gets another re-release.

Here is my display from a week or so back (before I got Sever/Snarl).

  4. Would love to see Jim Neidhart, "Slammy Award Winner" Owen, and the Bulldog as complementary figures.  But there are so many great, iconic characters you could go with in that era.  Undertaker, Hogan, Ted Dibiase (I can imagine your interpretation of his laughing face!), Ric Flair, Big Van Vader, Great Muta, the Road Warriors, the Rockers. . .and of course, the Macho Man.  I already have a terrific Macho Man custom that I got from Secret Santa a few years ago, but you can never have enough Macho Men!  *cue the Village People song*

  5. Hey Rob!  I hope you guys are doing well.  Work has been kicking my rear.   But that's no excuse to ignore the best internet forum in existence!  I didn't see that one when I glanced at the pegs, but if I do see them, I can pick them up for you if you want.  Anything else that's worth paying attention to?  I saw the full Wolverine line, with Mojo, etc., the Black Panther line, Nightmare Before Christmas, Ripley with the vehicle from Aliens, plus some Muppets.

  6. I swung by my local Toys R Us yesterday, for the purpose of using a gift card that was going to be useless after a month. I went to the section of the Minimates, and the pegs were overflowing. It seems like no one was buying them at all. I haven't been following Minimates very closely for a while, so I don't know if this is indicative of what is going on everywhere else. But when the heavy discounts come, I'll have to head back and see if there's something that catches my eye. When another one of these Toys R Us is closed about 8 or 9 years ago across town, I stocked up.  I think I still have some of those in storage.

Real talk - if I *NEVER* see a Cyclops figure in that John Byrne costume again, I will be happy.
I know it's an iconic era of comics, but I've seen it made in almost every line. Lego has done it. Marvel legends has done it twice. Marvel Universe has done it twice - maybe 3 times.... Minimates have done it 3 times.
I know they wouldn't fit thematically with a BD Miniskirt Jean, but there are a few variants i'd rather see before a BD Byrne Cyke. Erik the Red. Blue & White X-Factor. X-Terminators, Red X-face costume, Dark Phoenix Cyke, Future/Turban Red & Slym Cyke.

It is my least favorite costume, and everyone else's favorite. I hate it.

. . .it's not a great costume. However, I personally feel that most costumes the X-Men have worn are ugly as sin. The original costumes? Ugly. The "graduation" costumes? Ugly. The GSXM costumes? Mostly ugly.

Greatest Cyclops costume by far, and the pre-1990s X-Men have had some of the best costumes in comic history!  Spidey edges them out, but that's about it.  From the 1990s on, though. . .the less said, the better.

  8. Your Jason looks pretty great, though I read of several owners having some major QC problems on him, even glaring ones like missing chevrons on his mask.  Extremely iconic character and look.  I got Ash a few weeks back, and that is a very, very good figure by Sideshow standards.  In fact, the reason I missed out on the exclusive is that I have so little faith in SSC that I would pre-order from them.  But if they can get a few wins in succession that might change my opinion.

Kind of funny that they're creating so many figures that Betomatali sold in the past, though--Beetlejuice, Ash, Jason, Freddy.  Maybe Creepshow will be next!

  9. Near Dark is one I wanted to love.  It's got three of the major (and best!) actors from Aliens as vampires, directed by future academy award winner Kathryn Bigalow, and has a totally bad-ass Paxton vampire.  But on the whole that one doesn't resonate with me.  Love that bar scene, though.

Frailty.  I discovered it because of a mention in a horror rag and it immediately became a favorite of all time.  Paxton starred and directed.  If you haven't seen it and are not squeamish, get access to it asap.

I saw this one in the theater, not thinking much about it going in.  Leaving the theater, I was pretty blown away by it.  To this day, it is one of my favorite movies, and possibly my favorite horror movie.  I loved Paxton.  One of my favorite actors period--he was definitely the best thing about Aliens--and I was gutted by this news.  Didn't know he directed Fish Heads, either!
