I do think that collectors would purchase Star Trek MiniMates in sets from the films.

We have Kirk from the Motion Picture and from The Wraith of Khan. And we have Ilia and Khan.

So why not make a box set that gives us Movie uniforms for Uhura, Spock, Sulu and McCoy. Then there could be parts to make Chekov (using Sulu's body) and Scotty (using Spock's body) from the Motion Picture and the set could also include parts to me Commander Decker and Ilia in her duty uniform.  Then another box set from The Wraith of Khan with Uhura, Sulu, Spock and Captain Terrell which could then include parts to make Saavik from Uhura's body, and Chekov from Terrell's body. A second Wraith of Khan set could include Dr Carol Marcus, Dr. David Marcus, Joachim and another of Khan's followers and maybe Preston (Scotty's nephew who dies as a result of Khan's attack) and a sixth figure or a supply of parts to make other of Khan's followers and the Marcus' in their cave gear.

The Search for Spock Set could include Kruge and Maltz (a Klingon officer), Saavik, and Spock (with a assortment of parts to make him seem to age and grow, and Uhura in her skirt uniform. This could be a five figure set as we would get the rest of the crew in civilian attire in the Voyage Home set.

A Voyage Home set could include a six figure assortment of Kirk, McCoy, Sulu and Scotty in civilian attire, Dr. Jillian Taylor and Spock in his robes. Maybe also extra parts to make Chekov and Uhura from assorted extra parts a Collector may have already.

Then Final Frontier: We could get Sybok, St. John Talbot, Korrd, Vixis, Caithlin Dar, and Captain Klaa. The Enterprise Crew would be able to be in the uniforms from previous sets so only the ambassadors, the Klingons and then Sybok ware needed for this set, but parts to make Uhura when she sings on the dunes would be a nice bonus.

The Undiscovered Country: We could get Chancellor Gorkon, Azetbur, General Chang, UFP President, Lt. Valeris, and Admiral Cartwright.  Again the Enterprise crew would all appear in the uniforms we already saw in past releases and this would allow characters not made before.

I would purchase at least three maybe four of each of these.

Then you move to the TNG movies and I am still on board

I'm with you and would buy these sets. But I gotta say ...

  2. I haven't had much call for scanning tech so I might not be the best person to ask. But I think you'd need at least some level of proficiency with the scanning software and some ability to clean things up.

There are free scanning apps for your phone. You could try one of those.  I think the next step up from there is dedicated scanning hardware going from hundreds to thousands of dollars. I did some scanning with an old Xbox Kinect. But I definitely had to clean them up after. I think the low end hardware is still basically the same as that or very similar tech.

I'm pretty sure there is no 3d photocopier yet. It sounds like that's kind of what you're looking for. If you see something that purports to be, do let me know. I would love a cheap and highly accurate scanner of any type.

  3. I think the texture you're talking about is the layer lines.

Resin printers typically use a lower layer height than plastic squirters so the lines are less visible (better z resolution and accuracy). On top of that resin printers are typically more accurate in the X and Y dimensions so the border of each layer is closer to where you expect it to be.

Materials-wise, the resin tends to be much more brittle than plastic. Not good if you drop them. I'm printing parts in ABS and PLA plastics. I'm not much of a resin guy. I think they may have developed some now with more plastic-like properties.

With both types, layer height is a parameter of your print settings. I can choose to physically print more or less detail. I can print the plastic layers so low that you might not notice them anymore like a resin print but that print is going to take forever. But it still won't look as clean and sharp as a resin print.

One of the things that makes it a fun hobby for a nerd like me is that there are so many things you can tweak to affect performance and quality.

  4. Since I've been dong vehicles, I tend to fill out sheets with vehicle stickers to use later, if I don't have a full sheet.

Lately I've been 3d printing my customs and I usually make 3 and then pick the best one. I make a few duplicate stickers in case I screw something up. And still I feel like I waste some sticker paper.

I have to remind myself sometimes that I can afford to use a whole sheet for one custom if I want. I don't really need to treat it as preciously as I do but it's good not to be wasteful.

Try David shapeways.com/shops/davesmodelshop He has a set of wings plus lots of cool prints.

He's still here too.  Same Dave that made me a Bishop face, I believe.

Wings would not be a good one for me. But I could probably make some harnesses to re-use factory wings.

  6. Hey everyone,

With Photobucket soon to go paid only, a bunch of the fights in this thread will soon disappear.

Anyone who is not familiar with what this thread is about should read it from the beginning. The Geohound had a real talent for Minimate fight choreography and the later stuff hosted on minimatescentral is still there for now. It brought a smile to my face looking back at some of these.

Here's to The Geohound! Whatever he is up to these days. I hope he's prospering.

The Lego Peter Porker seems an expensive investment for a 'head' so I did a little 'trawling' of the net . It didn't take more than a few minutes to find a link to a UK company that could supply me with a Lego-type Peter Porker figure @ £2.99 . I bought a few to get free shipping & they arrived in 2 days . In a nutshell the head fits perfectly onto a minimate body , that had already been established, of course .

Further trawling shows that the same company that produces these  (not the retailer who sold me mine) can supply a whole bloody wave (8) of Porker inspired Marvel figures , iron Man,Hulk ,Captain America et al . Priced @ $0.99 each per character (not per head) + shipping .

    Link?

I'm so curious. So curious, in fact, that I did not spend the time trying to think of pig related puns to work into my post. Sausages come in links so there's a weak one I guess. Anyway, where can one see these figures?

Is there another figure besides Walgreens wave 7 Captain Marvel that uses the same hip accessory? Or any other ideas of a hip piece to use for a Petra custom?

Classic BSG have a piece that looks a bit similar. Not sure if it will work for you or not.

It's meant to represent the gun belt. But the holster is a separate piece that attaches to the leg. So the belt part looks similar to this piece though not the same one.

Hopefully it suits your purpose and you have one.

  9. I love this place sometimes. However it should have been obvious. It's a reference to The Princess Bride and how Humperdink wants to frame those smarmy Guilders.  :)

edit: Somehow I missed that NerdyTrev  had this one. If they ever make Princess Bride mates maybe we can get smarmy Guilder army builders. 😆

  10. I'm sure the enterprising among us will figure out how to safely decapitate Porker and transplant his head to Itsy Bitsy. Not the end of the world. But it would be nice to not have to.

Hopefully it will be like Rocket and we will get an articulated version later.

  11. I quite like the hands and web effects. I hope Spider-Ham is going to come with regular hands or they are at least swappable.

You're never going to sell me on that 2099 though. LOL I'd trade the cape and / or the spikes for more tampo myself.

I think we opted for new web effects instead. Everyone comes with a new, different web-spray wrist attachment, and you get the new Miguel cape.

The one we can see in the photo looks cool. It will be neat to have some new web effects.

I'll be 100% honest, even though I have not seen them in person (I had to skip the show this year), I did look at the design sheets, and the painter approval pics, and... I didn't even notice. Literally. I love Minimates, have hundreds of them, but the lack of a muscle on the thigh goes right by me. I think for a lot of people that is a reality. It's an added production cost that maybe 1 out 20 people notices.

I might not notice in some cases, and / or the figure might look OK without leg tampos. It kills 2099 though. I have the same complaint with this proto as I did with the original. With so little (front facing) tampo and that blue plastic, it looks slapped together. Like a blank with a couple of stickers. This is the only Minimate that ever gave me this cheaped out feeling ... twice. It looks like some detail has been added but I still get the same vibe and still find it ugly and cheap looking. I'd say it's a small improvement over the original, but not enough. If ever a Mate needed some muscle detailing to round it out, it's this one.

As for Ben Reilly, #2 was the best, followed by 1. This one is a distant 3rd for me.

I'm excited to see more web effects.
