  1. That is a new facial expression for Spider-Woman!

    Comparison.JPG

Still, kind of disappointing looking at these same figures that they showed us so long ago. A wave filled with missed opportunities. No bulked up chest or boots for Colossus (they could have used one of the Thing chests or just given him the same piece they used in the Giant Sized set; at least this one goes better with puny Hulk, puny Juggernaut, and puny Thing), no mask or boots for Wolverine, no jacket for Days of Futures Past Wolverine, wrong choice in belts for Nick Fury (why give him Blade's belt, which has a hole for an attached accessory, when you aren't going to give Fury an accessory?), a painted on skull cap for Cage, the list goes on and on. I realize these are prototypes, but I doubt seriously that we'll see paint detail spread beyond just the front of the figure (belts on Sentry, Colossus, Wolverine, etc. Cap's red and white stripes don't even go all the way around the figure) And accessories! No guns for Nick Fury? No anything for Ronin? Green Arrow gets a bow and no fewer than three trick arrows to play with, and Ronin doesn't even get two sticks to rub together. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to get the figures (whenever they come out) but I'm still a bit disappointed that I won't have anything more than what I could have produced with the current host of parts and a little paint.

  2. Thing I find funny is the links for other auctions included on that Batgirl link. You see this really decent attempt at Batgirl, then you click on these other links and see quick customs of Oracle, Clark Kent, Batman Beyond, Tombstone, and Black Widow. Its like looking at both ends of the spectrum.

  3. As soon as I discovered Marvel Minimates, I was hooked. I started trying to collect just Spidey and his rogues gallery (let's face it, he's the only one who really has a rogues gallery in mate form), but soon found myself collecting every figure that was released at the time. Basically, I've been onboard as soon as I discovered how cool the little guys were. I've been with them with the new mold figures and interesting exclusives, and I've ridden out the repaint waves and the previously released turned into a wave figures. But its been harder and harder to stick out this slump. We got two waves of repaints, a years wait, then two more repaint waves. No news of anything bright on the horizon, heck, no news of anything. We see new stuff for Street Fighter, new stuff for DC, new stuff for BSG, heck even Speed Racer stuff (Speed Racer?!), but the line that really launched the craze is taking a backseat to new liscences. My customs outnumber my official figures, and all I get is repaints that skimped on a decent paint job and ducked using pieces that were already molded that would have made more sense. I feel more and more like this next wave is going to be a slap in the face. If I could just hear someone from AA/DST say that the next wave is going to be spectacular, or some other assurance that they haven't forgotten about the little guys who made it all possible, then my fears would be eased and my doubts erased. But we hear nothing.

Don't get me wrong. I don't hate AA or DST for the current trend for Marvel mates. After all, business is business. And they'll still manage to get my money if the next wave is all Spidey and all Wolvie (and with the Ultimate Clone Saga and the Exiles Army of Wolverines coming up, its possible), but I find myself hating the other lines because of how much more attention their own parents are giving them.

    Rabble Rabble!

  4. I have to agree with the thought that these images were grabbed almost at random. Spider-Woman on the alternate New Avengers box is the official one, rather than the other one. At the same time, you'll notice the old version of Captain America and Ultimate Spider-Man pictured alongside Boyd's Spider-Woman.

  5. I bought a set for myself and one for my little brother. The movie was pretty good, though a bit hokey at times. I too was disappointed that Juggernaut didn't come with the chest piece he was shown with in the movie, but not surprised.

Overall, my only real complaint is that these mates feel more like the cheaper C3 minimates rather than the normal plastic we're used to. And I think they glued Wolverine's hands in or something, because I literally tore one of his hands off trying to pull it off.

So, my vote: a good marketing idea and approached in a pretty good way, but it felt more like a missed opportunity in releasing variant mates. A better set would have seen New X-Men Beast, Angel, and Storm, plus a bulked up Juggernaut. With close to 15 Wolverines floating around already, did we really need another face for him?

  6. Where did you get those arms for Doc Ock? Those are sweet!

I got them from the Megablocks Doc Ock. I cut off the arm hubs for the minimate version, then just applied the connector piece that stuck on the back of the megablocks one. They're flexible, but they won't stay in specific poses the way the LEGO version does. Still, I thought they looked closer to the "true" version, so I went with those.

  8. I'm surprised characters like Lady Death and Red Sonja have been overlooked. Those are some of the more prominent names that I see at my comic book store. Heck, I even made a Red Sonja custom! I still have no idead who Magdeline is.

Tomb Raider would be a licensing nightmare though, I imagine, what with the movies, the games, and the comics.

But sign me up for anything from Lurch's list!

  9. Hey, good to see you posting again, Drgnrbrn316! How's about putting up pics of your customs?

Hey Logan. I've been meaning to post a link to my custom site again, but to be honest, customs have taken a backseat to Oblivion at the moment. I do have a few in production, and they look far superior to my previous ones (its amazing how changing paint brands does that).

And to stay on topic: anyone have a Tactical Batman? To quote Pip, "I'll pay $50 for one!"

  10. I finally managed to dig my claws into a Batcopter, but sadly, it did not come with the figure. And don't bother asking Playalong for the figure, because they don't have any extras on hand. For asking though, they did send me about 7 other C3 figures in his place. Where are you Tactical Batman?!

  11. As long as we're fixing figures, don't forget to paint the belts all the way around your figures (will they even have any detail on the back of these?) Oh, and you'll need to paint Luke Cage's head, bulk up your Colossus, and fix Wolverine's boots (why didn't they use the same boots from Gaijin and Giant Sized? They used the same paint job)

I've been one of AA/DST's top supporters through this whole part reuse slump they've gone through, and I was excited with getting New Avengers and Astonishing X-Men, but as the months went on and the prototypes never got polished up to be a solid final product, my support is starting to waiver. I know that new parts cost money to sculpt and that most of their attention is drawn to bringing in new licenses, but when they do half-assed jobs at at least painting the reused parts to look good, and don't even toss in a few accessories (Fury should have plenty of firepower, Cap should have a shield, Ronin should have something, ANYTHING!), its hard to sing praise to the line. I hope the next waves really wow me. I'll never quit collecting Marvel minimates, because I'm that hooked on the product and the idea. I just don't want to feel dirty for buying them.
