All these Star Wars references make me realize that we need Star Wars Minimates to make Minimates and DST 'too big to fail.'

I'm still bummed we never got Game of Thrones Minimates and to a lesser extent, Harry Potter. Both major franchises with tons of characters and looks. I don't really know why we need so many waves of NBX (a single film), but I guess there's enough interest to keep it going...?

  2. If Menagerie went around to comic shops and felt up all the packages to find the one-per-case Silks and sold them for a premium then that would be a jerk move.

But if he's buying cases and selling them for what people will pay for them, then I can't really blame him, because any one of us could buy cases as well. The problem is no one is really willing to do all that. It takes time and energy to sell off all the many undesirable duplicates to recoup the costs of buying a case for a single Silk.

And don't forget that the per blind bag figure costs more than the per figure cost of the two-packs.

  3. Yeah the Crazy 88 boxset was cool. Not because I care about Crazy 88, but because I thought this would be a great way to army build. To the point where I was trying to think of reasons to have a bunch of civilians in suits.

But if I could army build Hand ninjas, I'd totally buy two or three sets of those. Even if it were like a 3:1 ratio of Hand ninjas to another Wolverine or Daredevil, I'd get multiple sets.

The blind bagged / single-boxed army builders always annoyed the hell out of me, because they cost MORE per figure than the standard boxset or two-pack. The point of army builders is that I already want more than one, and would happily buy a ton at a fair price. Instead they're marked up because they come in singles.... I understand a single figure is cheaper than buying a two-pack where one is the army builder and the other is a duplicate non army builder character. But it doesn't have to be this way!

Anyway it could be a failure for DST to do Crazy 88-style army building (the army-building market might be too small), but it actually hasn't been tried yet for Marvel Minimates as far as I know.

  4. To me, the most frustrating thing about Minimates blind bags is that the higher price point and manufactured retailer exclusive "chase factor" are taking a lot of the fun out of collecting.

For years we've been able to buy Minimates in full sets thanks to the "custom case" availability, and all of a sudden that gets thrown out of the window to try and generate demand by artificially making 1 rare figure available in retailer exclusive blind bags.

Shouldn't the retailer exclusives be more plentiful at that retailer? What would the real harm be in including more of the retailer exclusives per case? Maybe 18 blind bag packs per case isn't the right number, maybe it needs to be 20 or 24?

For years i've been advocating that custom cases should be the standard method of distribution, and that the old 1-per-case retailer exclusive is outdated thanks to the internet. The current Blind Bag marketing technique takes the worst parts of poor distribution and artificial scarcity and combines them into something that ultimately doesn't work for either the retailer or the collector consumer.

The retailer would sell more if the retailer exclusives were more readily available and the collector consumer would buy more if the retailer exclusives were more readily available.

As for the argument that there is always the casual buyer that will only want the core characters and not care about the GITD or variant figures, then you can still attract that customer by just increasing the number of products per case from 18 to 24, or reduce the amount of unique characters per case from 8-9 to 4-5.

I feel your pain. It's a triple whammy. Retailer chase exclusive plus blind bag.

Unfortunately the retailers don't really care about you succeeding in finding the chase. It's to get you into the stores searching for them; they hope you'll buy other things in the process. The rarer it is the more times you'll visit their stores. I can only assume they find this creates more overall sales than simply meeting the demand for the exclusives.

  5. I'm planning on upgrading to those gtzip bags pk13 recommended. However, I also want to do this with my extensive 6" Marvel Legends and DCUC collections. The 1/12 scale figures vary wildly in size, but I don't want to have to buy too many bag sizes (two or three sizes at most) to cover them all, since they come in packs of 1000. Does anyone have a system for bagging these larger action figures? Maybe the smaller quantities of Ultra Pro would be more reasonable for the large, but fewer BAFs.

  6. I bought a Walgreen's set. I'm torn on these. They are pretty nice, but I don't think I need an animated parallel line of Marvel Minimates. They're too different aesthetically from the comic mates. Maybe I will just get the Spider-Mens. And unique characters if any. TIME WILL TELL.

  7. I'm still of the belief that the packaging art should show as much of the actual product as possible (at least until there is brand recognition). But stores could help out by displaying opened samples. That's usually how I end up buying the random blind bag/box at my LCS, when they have samples that look cool, because often the packaging doesn't do enough to show off the product.

  8. I'm honestly curious how well Gotham merchandise will sell. If it can, even in some small way, pave way to costumed DC Minimates, that would be amazing. But beyond that I find it difficult to imagine that more people would buy Gotham merchandise over Netflix Daredevil merchandise. I've mostly lost interest in Gotham, but might pick up some of the Minimates if I can use them as good generic civilians. Would definitely get all the Netflix MCU Minimates if they ever become a thing. With more series/seasons coming out, there's still time.

Maybe eventually with enough characters having appeared on screen (and more product opportunities beyond Minimates), DST will find it worthwhile to get the license.

  9. Hrm, I'm pretty disappointed there aren't more mutants. Seems weird. The easiest way to stretch out this line without diluting quality is to actually make more mutants, IMO. The show is introducing new characters constantly. We don't need multiple shredders and splinters so early.... I can kiiinda understand why there are four turtles every wave, even though it's a waste of slots for collectors. It's like we're already on the 60th wave (a la Marvel Minimates), where we might get one or two new characters per wave.

  10. They finally start licensing out their property and every body is getting love but minimates...

What do you want to bet they are going to have motu mega bloks next.

Since Mattel owns MegaBloks, yeah, that's the logical assumption. Considering the potential for playsets and vehicles, they could do worse.

Mega Bloks go great with Minimates, so I hope they have some cool sets that look good with fantasy-styled Minimates (e.g., Pathfinder).

  11. None of these are must haves for me, which I guess should be considered a good thing since I'm not going to SDCC this year. On the other hand, exclusive Minimates are usually pretty easy to get post-con that I kinda wished there was something more inspired.

Oh yeah is there any word on translucent TMNT 'mates? I want a clear red Raph and a clear purple Donnie!

  12. I remember thinking the biggest offender of no female figures was Mattel's Avatar: The Last Airbender toys. Half the main characters are female (Katara and Toph), yet neither got a single figure. So aggravating. You also couldn't get female figures from Naruto.

As far as Hasbro's Age of Ultron figures go, the biggest problem is that the toys just suck. Just browsing TRU the other day, there are like three different scales and zero consistency within a scale. I got the 3.75" Scarlet Witch so I could use her accessories à la toy showdown. The single pack figures are horrible, with only something like 5 POA, while the two-pack exclusives are super articulated Marvel Universe quality. As far as I know you can't even get the entire team. Horrible.

  13. I can't say I've ever been a true fan of the Muppets, but I appreciate that they keep trying. I watched the Muppet Babies as a kid and I really enjoyed the Jason Segel movie, but that's about it. This might be blasphemous to say, but I never liked the Miss Piggy character, which is a problem, because she's probably the most recognizable character after Kermit and they can't just get rid of her. Anyway, I'll give the new show a shot; hopefully it's good.

  14. Mutagen Donnie is in TRU Series 2. He's exclusive to TRU and the variant of Donnie. He comes with a suited up Kraang,

No word yet on translucent Raph & Donnie.

By "suited up Kraang" I assume you mean the Norman figure, correct?

As for giveaway Raph and Donnie, I'm hoping they are at SDCC again this year. Orange Mikey and Blue Leo need their red and purple brothers.

I've been getting both types of translucent turtles. I much prefer the SDCC ones over the green ones. So yeah, I hope we get Raph and Don at some point.

Yeah, suited up Kraang is "Norman" although I'm not sure where that name comes from. I don't remember ever hearing them referred to as that in the show.

I feel like I read somewhere that they're called Norman because it sounds like "normal." And if you condense normal and human (their disguise) you get Norman. I may have made that up just now, but I don't think I'm that clever.

  15. Do the specialty assortments come in boxes of 18 like Series 1 did?

Series 3 is already in the works? Niiiiiice!

Is it too early to start guessing who's in that line-up? How about:

    Baxter Stockman

    Mousers

    Metal Head

    Xever

    Tiger Claw

    Rat King

    Irma

    Kirby

    Mikey as TurFlytle

I think you're too optimistic. My money is on the four turtles again in some variant form, and four supporting characters. The TV show is going to create new characters faster than Minimates will be released.
