  1. Yeah, when I got my Spectrum and read that, the first thing I thought of was a Mirror, Mirror set. It's ideal for the box set version, and considering they went with "Bread and Circuses" over "Mirror, Mirror" for the regular wave makes it seem more likely. It's a popular episode, it would be variants on main cast members, and it fits the box set format perfectly. Fingers crossed!

  2. Just to let you guys know, I got these in my package from AFX yesterday. I was delighted, since I wasn't expecting them.

I ordered from the holiday store to get Armor Spidey, and was expecting that order, but they packed it with the Defenders set and BSG 3. I was super happy to get those inside the box with the others.

Sorry I don't have pictures, but these 'Mates are definitely DA BOMB. I love them all. This Hulk replaced my original one as my favorite since he's bulkier and angrier.

  3. I'm not upset that they aren't being released. Admittedly, the characters in the film were pretty bland and the proposed 'mates were accurate portrayals of what they were supposed to be.

I was going to post the same thing. I preordered them, but I'm not at all sad they aren't coming out. The actual GR 'Mate looked good, but the rest were so dull. A new famale would have been nice, and Nicholas Cage still has enough goodwill left from Face Off and Leaving Las Vegas to make me want a 'Mate of him. But the rest of them were dullsville, especially that awful chase figure.

I went into that movie with no expectations at all, and was still disappointed.

  4. Just remember, for those that might buy MegaBloks... If you're expecting anything approaching LEGO quality, then you'll be disappointed. MB uses a cheaper plastic that's far more prone to breakage, warping, and melting. They don't fit together like LEGO does, and the sets aren't nearly as creative or interesting.

  5. I do agree that we had some absurd Spideys and Wolverines, and I don't care for them at all. But I think making a blanket "no more variants" statement is worse. I don't see any complaints about Red Son Supes, or anyone minding that we're getting several Marty McFly or Jack Bauer figures. We got four Iron Men really close together, but nobody minds because they're all significantly different.

Rather than no more variants, I'd say no more meaningless variants. I can take having yellow Vampire, brown Vampire, Ultimate Vampire, New X-Men Vampire, X3 Vampire, and even a Logan. Each of those is significantly different enough from each other. Heck, I don't even mind that we got a "classic" yellow and an "Astonishing" yellow. But doing minor stuff like Patch, 2 civilian Logans, etc is just overkill and not needed. Even worse with Spidey.

Also keep in mind that we've seen up to plague 20 with Horrible, but only 8 with Horrific. I have little doubt that when we get to Horrific plague 20, we'll have more Werewolf by Night, Boris Karloff, and Wonder Woman 'ghosts than we might expect. But as long as they keep them significantly unique, I don't mind.

  6. I'll scream it until I'm blue in the face:

No. More. Characters. That. We. Already. Have.

    The variants are bad enough.

Ugh. No offense, but somebody call the waaahmbulance. An updated Iron Man is a good idea, as would other characters that have had other outfits. (Jim Lee Cyclops, anyone?) Now, when you get into insignificant things like Patch, you have an issue, but updating Emma Frost made a lot of sense. As was posted by another, if you don't like it, don't buy it. Voting with your dollar rather than here will get you a lot farther.

I think that they might have burned off a lot of goodwill with the goofy Daredevil and Spider-Man variants, but I don't think that means we should go on the other extreme and never re-do characters when it would be called for.

  7. The shaving was going to be my suggestion.

The awesome stuff from BrickArms, Little Armory, and BrickForge won't work. Those are designed for minifig hands, so you'd have to modify them as well. Since eacy of those stores are one or two-man operations, I doubt they'd customize them for you. (They'd just do the same thing, since all their stuff is made with injection molding.)

Stikfas accessories may work, though they're likely to be a little big (both in scale and for hands). Playmobil is another line that you could use, but would have to be shaved down. They're good because the Playmo klicky and the MiniMate are somewhat close in height. And if you can use GI Joe stuff, then the Hasbro Star Wars accessories will fit, too, if you need lightsabers or more "futuristic" guns. The 3-inch Pirates of the Caribbean line's accessories would also work if you need that period's accessories.

  8. These certainly do look good. However, I'm still unsure that I'll get them. Marvel, DC, Star Trek, BSG are all natural wants for me. BTTF pushed it a little, but it's a fine movie with lots of geek cred. But these, I'm just not sure about. The movies are all well and good, but I don't know that I like them enough to want them in MiniMate form...

  9. As obvious as it would be to put Bucky in there, it also seems too right. Sure, Steve will be back someday (and in reference to Uncle Ben, we did have an alternate universe Ben running around 616 for a little while in Friendly Neighboorhood), but they've kept Jean Grey pretty much dead for several years now, so who knows how long it'll be before Steve comes back. (And to add another name to the hat, they've been doing some heavy hinting that it could be ole Hawkeye taking Cap's mantle.

Though I have to take issue with the comment that Cap was killed only for shock value. It's had a pretty big affect across the entire Marvel universe and certainly wasn't something that was hastily done.

  10. As fun as mixed waves would be, I have to agree with Reideen that themed waves make more sense. I'm a Trek fan in general, with my least exposure to TOS. But either way, I'll be getting them all. So for someone like me, it makes no difference if it's all TOS or mixed.

But I'm a subset of a subset. For the "average" buyer, I think you're more likely to sell all of your set at once if they're themed. I suppose for the comic store owner, it's better to sell a set of three to one person, than a single set to three people.

Though as a fan, I'm astoundingly puzzled by the decision to do "Bread and Circuses" Kirk. I wholly understand the want for putting a Kirk in each wave, but there are other versions that make more sense. (I'm not much of a TOS fan, but the first five that pop into my head are regular, battle damaged, formal, Mirror, and alternate uniform [like he wore in Trouble with Tribbles and others]. Even the single-episode one in this list, Mirror, is an iconic episode. Hell, Kirk appeared wholly shirtless more often, so that seems like a more deserving variant.)

  11. Man, this DOES feel like the last wave, especially considering that as a casual fan I hardly recognize any of these characters.

Really? Running down the wave, they're all pretty important and long established characters. Roslyn and Baltar, of course, should be pretty recognized. Zarek played a very big role in the series. Gaeta has been in C&C since the beginning. Though Calle and Cottle are second-stringers, I think they're important enough to the series to be recognized.

Now it makes sense not to know, say, Kat from the upcoming 2-pack, or even someone like Billy that's been off the show for a while. But even to a casual fan, this wave is still full of hard hitters...

  12. Just realized that I haven't replied here yet...

    Black Adam

    Mr. Terrific

    Alan Scott GL

    Riddler (Green Suit, please)

    Oracle

    Huntress

    Black Canary

    Kingdom Come Flash

    Kingdom Come Wonder Woman

    Kingdom Come Green Lantern

Batman and Superman variants: Kingdom Come versions. Heh.
