  1. What would amaze me about it is the credibility and diversity of MiniMates. The only time you've had so many properties under a single style was back in the Mego days. But if MiniMates could add Star Wars and Indy, then I think they'd have the big names of sci-fi/fantasy wrapped up.

As it is right now, you can make a superteam Dream Dozen of Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Frodo, Starbuck (old and new), Dr. Who, Wolverine, Batman, Witchblade, Ryu, and Morrigan. And that's not even all the sci-fi/fantasy properties and the non-sci-fi/fantasy movie/TV licenses.

With Star Trek, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings, you'd have the biggest nerd-core series ever. The very thought of being able to make just about any big fantasy pairing that I can dream of makes me drool. How would Jack Bauer and Batman team up to find Hannibal Lecter? What if Marty McFly met the actual Clint Eastwood? Can Han Solo beat Indiana Jones? Can Yoda train Rocky to be a Jedi? ("Mmmm, catch a chicken you must.")

  2. Like most others, I'm also shocked by the idea that DC 'Mates might be done.

Personally, I thought Wave 8 was very strong. Hitting Red Son, Question/Batwoman pairing, Titans, and Sinestro made for a lot of characters that I want. Even a relatively "weak" wave like 7 still had characters that I wanted.

Here's hoping that this isn't it and we get many more waves down the line.

  3. My Rocky knowledge isn't 100%, but I'm wondering if they're going to pair that Living in America Apollo with the Rocky wearing the red white and blue trunks. Did Rocky wear those before he fought Drago in Rocky IV? That pairing would make sense.

    Also loving the Paulie/Rocky 2-pack.

  4. Thank goodness. We can finally put the "Marvel MiniMates are DOOOOOOOMED!" rumors to rest. I figured we'd see some at Toy Fair, so I'm glad these are here. Looking good.

As awful as the movie was, I'm a little more disappointed we're not getting the Ghost Rider 'Mates. They'd have gone well with X3, SM3, IM, and Hulk.

  5. Pictures also at cooltoyreview.com.

Picard does look off, but that's another situation of a block body vs. the real thing. I think it'll be fine.

I absolutely LOVE what we're getting here. They look just awesome. The fact that the Sisko variant isn't just a head swap (but ALSO a hair piece) is freaking sweet. I love them all.

EDIT: Just saw the pics linked above at figures.com. I can't believe the detail they put under the Borg chest piece! Wow! Not so much into the bulky TOS movie uniforms, but I can deal. :-)

  6. DST got the Star Wars license, or at least for certain collectibles. Not sure if they can go the Minimate route though, what with Lego holding the miniature rights.

They also got the Indiana Jones license. I don't think this means MiniMates for either, but it does mean that there's now a relationship between Lucasfilm and DST. Maybe this relationship can grow into Star Wars and Indy Minis in the future.

  7. Correct me if I'm wrong, but when Sisko made Captain, wasn't that when he started shaving his head and grew the goatee?

You are correct, sir! Plus, IIRC, it was around that time that they shifted from the black jumpsuits w/ color shoulders to the black and gray uniforms with colored undershirt. But even if it's just a simple head swap, I'll be pleased.

I doubt that we'll be getting any pips on collars; Minimates just don't have room for collars. I'm actually pretty happy about that, though. It means that the uniforms will be easier to interchange between characters. For example, I doubt that we'd ever get a DS9-jumpsuit Data, but a simple head and hand swap with O'Brien works. It wouldn't work if rank were shown.

Hopefully, we'll get all three colors of all three uniforms. Lt. Jack Bauer, reporting for duty!

  8. Awesome awesome awesome. I couldn't be more thrilled with how this is shaping up.

I like the idea of mixing the waves. It's like going to the buffet where you get a taste of everything.

I also love the chase of Sisko. Distinct enough change while still being significant, but not totally necessary for non-chasers.

All in all, I'm super-excited for this lineup. Except for "Bread & Circuses," every Kirk variation has made sense.

  9. Nice to see what the overall vote-getters were. Not all of them were what I picked, but at the same time I don't have a problem with any of them, either.

My biggest beef was with 24 getting the worst license. It's not bad at all! :-) But I understand how it could have happened.

This presentation was far better than both the Golden Globes and the People's Choice Awards.
