I think the Godzilla mates are a good example of what's possible, as is MODOK, as are some of the Battle Beasts and all of the other wacky form factors they've designed over the history of the 2" lines.

Why I think Monsters Unleashed would have worked as a series of 2-packs includes exactly what you mention - the opportunity to package each monster with an A-lister or important hero in a contemporary costume. Best of both worlds: new monsters, and heroes from current editorial on the shelf at the same time.

Honestly, the ship has probably sailed on timing a release for this event, but I get happy whenever the Monsters grab a little spotlight. I still have this HC collection from the last time we saw some Monster-love:

With Fin Fang Foom, my problem is the number of extended appendages. The way I see it, he'd have to basically be a Xenomorph Warrior with a long neck and wings. The Aliens already have to be placed in their packaging sideways, but FFF's wings would inhibit that. They could be packed on a separate tray, behind the minimates, but they'd have to be pretty thin to fit behind a sideways minimate. However, if he were released in a Deluxe set (again, I'm not sure if DST can make those for Marvel) I could see FFF following the Xenomorph Queen's design pretty successfully (and at a larger size).

Of course, there are likely other monsters that could be made more easily, but Fin Fang Foom seems to be one of the least obscure of the ones I've seen.

  2. I just can't really see how DST design a Fin Fang Foom that would work in a two-pack. It's not just a matter of size, it's a matter of complexity. It's the same problem they had with Ghidorah. I think DST could make it work in a Deluxe set, but I don't know if DST can make those for Marvel (or who DST would have to package him with to justify it).

    My ideal Wolverine wave

Madripoor black suit Wolverine and Silver Samurai

Weapon X with helmet and redo of Lady Deathstrike

A properly colored brown suit Wolverine and Sprite Kitty Pryde

     Fang Wolverine and Gladiator

That sounds great to me. I hadn't thought of a new Lady Deathstrike, but we need one.

Thinking over more, I think this would be my ideal Wolverine LCS wave, but with Team X Wolverine and Maverick in place of brown suit Wolverine and Sprite (as I'd like to see a new brown suit Wolverine anchor a full 80's Secret Wars-ish era X-Men wave).

  4. I'd like to see something like this.

    LCS:

    Fang Wolverine (with Fang parts)/Lilandra

    Ninja Patch Wolverine/Silver Samurai

    Team X Wolverine/Maverick

Death Wolverine/Pestilence Caliban (with regular Caliban parts)

    TRU:

    Fang Wolverine (with Fang parts)/Gladiator

     All-New X-23/Chulk

    New X-Men Wolverine/Beast

Some other interesting options would be:

AoA Weapon Omega Wolverine/AoA X-Force Nightcrawler

    Dark X-Men Daken Wolverine/Dark X-Men Weapon Omega

    Weapon X Helmet Wolverine/Silver Fox

    Here Comes Tomorrow Wolverine/Cassandra Nova

Why are you guys all against extra parts all of a sudden?

I just think it's too many alternate pieces for DST to have reasonably included.

Fine, make your own unpowered Colossuses.  See if I care.

That's what I intend to do. I have Iron Man 2020 hair, a Thief of Thieves head, SW Deadpool torso and Avalanche legs set aside specifically for that purpose.

If it's releasing in March then DST must know by now one way or another. I would think a Wolverine-themed comic wave would be more likely, though the date means at least in theory there might be room for a movie release (March is more open than the summer). I'd be fine with a comic wave since there are a number of worthwhile Wolverine variants that have either not been made or could use an update.

You're right, there are still quite a few. I'd be happy with a Wolverine-based wave.

I'd take a catch-up series or two just to fill gaps (Silver Samurai, Quicksilver, Silver Tiger) but Chuck doesn't want to go backward. (Well, he'll go back to the future a couple times but... Never mind. I'm not even going to try to understand his criteria.)

I think Zach's said that they can't make figures from the older Marvel movies without re-licensing them, and DST doesn't think it would be worth it (I could be imagining that though). If we did get a catch-up series or two, though, my ideal lineup would probably be some combination of:

    Moira MacTaggert/Riptide (X-Men: First Class)

    Banshee/Angel Salvadore (X-Men: First Class)

Silver Samurai/Final Battle Viper (The Wolverine)

Quicksilver/Beast (X-Men: Days of Future Past)

Bolivar Trask/Classic Sentinel (X-Men: Days of Future Past)

Kitty Pryde/Iceman (X-Men: Days of Future Past)

Blink/Future Sentinel (X-Men: Days of Future Past)

Granted, there's a little wishful thinking with regards to the number of DoFP sets (and that's not even including Warpath, Bishop, Colossus, Sunspot, Rogue or Stryker).

  8. I'd say the lack of Deadpool or Apocalypse 'mates (sadly, IMO) makes me think this is pretty unlikely.

I know the FoX-Men have their detractors, but I've always liked their movies. I'm sad to see minimates moving away from them, especially since the movies we do have some representation of generally lack a few crucial characters.

  9. The problem with this is, from what I understand, most of the monsters from this series won't be able to be properly made as minimates.

While I'd welcome even an underscaled Fin Fang Foom or Devil Dinosaur, I don't think they could be made outside of a Deluxe set.

  10. They look great, and there are plenty of accessories, but I can't help wishing they came with an optic blast Cyclops mask, clawless Wolverine hands and a fastball special hand for Colossus.

Nightcrawler's assortment of extras looks the best to me (which is good because he's my favourite Marvel character), but Storm and Banshee have some great parts for posing and alternate looks.

  11. It depends which characters would need to be there. Legion and X-Man would need to be pretty much completely different figures from the standard uniforms. Warlock and powered-up Magma would be more or less the same as their 80's counterparts. The 616 version of Blink was on this team too, and she wears her own costume.

Reading this reminds me I need to get ahold of Luke to see if he can add an extra Colossus/Nightcrawler to my order. Want to try making Nocturne and Mimic customs using parts from that set.

That's a good idea. I'm planning on getting a second set to make a human-form Colossus, but I could probably try these from the leftovers. What are your plans for Mimic's body?
