I don't think all modern comics are bad but I do think that they are overpriced in most instances. In the old days when I bought a crap issue I'd just say meh it was a dollar now if it's a bad issue it's almost 5 bucks and that's a drink at happy hour.

I totally get that some modern comics are good and some old comics are not, and that everybody will have their own opinions and enjoy different things.  However, the biggest thing that strikes me about modern comics (and admittedly I only currently read 3 or 4 titles) is that they seem to take so much less time to read than older ones if we are talking value for money.  I've recently been reading a bit of old West Coast Avengers and they take me soooo much longer to read than anything published recently.  However where modern ones do score over old ones is by having the "previously in..." page at the start as the older stuff just has to keep on clumsily inserting thought/speech bubbles to remind us where the story is at in the main body of the comic which gets pretty repetitive.

Back on topic for the thread, yes great to have some clues again Zach.  Is the line up still the same as it was in the clues you gave right at the start of the thread?  And are TRU 24 and 25 for that matter too?  Thanks.

  2. So, it seems like (most of!) the mystery of this wave has been solved and I'm certainly looking forward to it finally being revealed next week.  However, it just struck me as pretty amazing that we actually have a thread here with over 400 posts for a wave that we haven't even seen yet!  What then also struck me is how great it is that Zach has been providing us with all of the clues.  It's been a very long time since wave 73 was revealed (I'm actually not sure why such a big gap but I guess there must be a reason) but all of the speculation resulting from the clues has given us plenty of interest in the meantime, which is a great thing! :)

    Now, I wonder who's in TRU 24...:D

Ashley Barton hails from the Old Man Logan timeline. She's the daughter of Hawkeye... and Peter Parker's youngest daughter Tonya. Let the creepiness of that sink in a minute. So Ashley apparently got her granddad's power, with no sense of responsibility. She got together a gang to try and overthrow the Kingpin in Hammer Falls and got herself captured. Clint rescues his kid while he and Logan were on that cross country road trip together. Ashley, in turn, kills the Kingpin and states she wasn't trying to overthrow him because he was the bad guy, she wanted to run Hammer Falls herself. This probably should have been hinted at with a code name like "Spider-B***h". Clint objects, so she orders her gang to kill him, Logan swoops in in a Spider-Mobile and Clint lives a little longer. Next time you see Ashley she's calling herself Spider-Girl/Woman (had to make her more family friendly after all), and is recruited by the Superior Spider-Man to his team to fight Morlun's family in the Spider-verse event. Shocking I know that Otto would choose another morally questionable Spider to work with.

Thanks Miry, no sooner hinted than a full biog provided!  Very impressive!

And yes, I'm thinking Buffalo's latest guess is looking really likely, though I agree with those who don't feel the need for another OML.

Man... I wish the term "recent" or "modern" wasn't in any of the clues... Binary Ms. Marvel vs BoEM Rogue would be an AWESOME two pack.

But alas, clues rule this one out... wish they didn't, but they do.

Miry, I almost ALWAYS wish the terms recent or modern weren't in clues!  :D

Nonetheless I'm stoked that we'll be getting a classic thor villain in this wave.  Unfortunately as I'm not reading much modern stuff atm I can't offer anything more on the spidey-verser/x-avenger guesses though.  I don't actually know who Ashley Barton is in fact?

Weird question... would you Wanda enthusiasts be contented with a head? Like if they just stuck they Kooky quartet head in with a Classic Black Widow and a Swordsman would that be ok or do you guys want the complete figure?

Interesting question.  For me personally, yes I would be happy with just the head.  I would prefer the whole figure obviously but as long as the head matched wave 16's version I would be happy.  Mind you, tbh if we got a swordsman/classic black widow without the wanda head I would be equally happy!  (And amazed!!) :)

  6. IF (please note the big "if") they ever make swordsman I think he'd most likely be paired with hawkeye, though him and Mantis would be a dream 2 pack for me.  I agree that the kooky wanda would also be welcome though.

Oh and I have that comic laying around somewhere too BHM, though of course since then I've read them all in the US versions - I think colour works so much better!!

post-638-0-74235200-1420290476_thumb.jpg       This was about the first comic I ever bought, the comic ran for about fifteen years & I still have every issue ...quite why I'm not sure ?

This was the first US comic I read back in 1965 .  post-638-0-76792200-1420290423_thumb.jpg

I would love that swordsman!  He was in the first marvel comic I ever read but it was a reprint of the avengers/defenders crossover storyline published in the UK's "Super Spiderman and Captain Britain" comic.  The same issue also featured...you guessed it...Spidey fighting Stegron on the front cover.

I can dig that. I really enjoy mythology and gods and folklore. So a lot of the mythology around the Thor lore is very engaging to me. Even the very modern characters like Bloodaxe and Thunderstrike. I remember the Toy Biz action figures coming out in the 90s and I couldn't wait for the Thor figure to be released.

I generally try to buy all of the Thor releases, except for the civvies in the movie waves and if the movie costume doesn't resemble the comic book counterpart.

Yep, I'm with you on all of that.  I've always had an interest in mythology, Vikings and colourful superheroes, so when the 9 year old me first came across thor comics there was no looking back!  Thus I'm always really pleased to see any classic thor minimates in DST's schedules and although I'm not a big fan of the movie waves generally, the thor ones normally have some appeal, along with gotg.

As for this wave, well, now we have the thor villain narrowed down to three and I see the likelihood being surtur, ulik and mangog in that order as I can't think of a big storyline that involves ulik directly, although he is nearly always around.  And as Buffalo says, the hulk/red king pairing seems a near certainty.  The rest don't seem much clearer than they have for a while to me though.

Oh and thanks for the character bios Miry, always a good read while we wait for the reveal!

  9. Yeah count me in on the "Ulik would be great" party!  Though I'd be happy with Surtur too for sure.

And I agree Freaqualizer, any thor love, especially classic in my opinion, is very welcome.  Wrecking Crew would be good and I still hold out hope for a comic warriors 3 someday.

I wonder if the Thor minimate is the new War Thor that's running around. I would be pretty stoked for that.

I agree that would be cool but as he only recently debuted and this wave has been coming for a while I doubt it could be him.  Hopefully down the line though if not this time...?

    3 out of 8.

I'm reckoning that will be red king, hydracap and one of the thor villains then.  However, I'm sure technically that's 3 out of 11 so it might be useful if you could tell us which thor villain you were counting... ;)

The guesses are getting pretty good! Some of the "locks" are not right, but all of the [unknowns] have been guessed.

Interesting.  I'm not sure what people are considering a "lock" right now but I'm thinking planet hulk/red king, surtur, ironheart and maybe rogue are fitting that category?

Out of those ones, I'm still wondering about surtur.  Although I'd love him to be made I'd probably love an ulik more and, to my mind at least, he is a more consistently prominent character over the years in thor comics than surtur (and in toy form) so part of me will be a bit surprised if we get surtur over him.  He does wear less though so that gives him a big advantage right now!

Of the others there is no real evidence for Rogue in Zach's clues but I'm actually wondering if Ironheart isn't quite as certain as we think.  She could easily be in TRU24 which opens up the legacy avengers slot again.  That leaves a tiny part of me hoping it could be kate bishop, but sadly I do mean tiny!

Oh and re the avengers/hulk debate my formative years on the avengers were the englehart, shooter/micheline eras so anybody who wasn't on the team between issues 100-200 (approximately!) are mere pretenders in my eyes! :)

    Planet Hulk / Red King

    [Thor variant] / Surtur

    Ironheart / [Spider-Verser]

    [unmade Avenger variant] / Rogue

There... adjusted elhonez's guess. And it still has two of Buffalo's guesses in there.

Ya know, I'm going to show my age a bit here... but I still have trouble thinking of Hulk as an Avenger. For most of my prime comics reading years, he was much more frequently an Avengers opponent or a Defender than he ever was an Avenger. And then came the movie, and now he's suddenly a mainstay of the team he founded then stomped away from. Even when I thought of Red King, Hulk as unmade story specific Avenger variant never occurred. Of course now the Defenders are Avengers and the Defenders look more like the Heroes for Hire... but again, I am old...

And thanks, guys. Good to see you two too.

Ah, I knew there was a reason that I was glad you were back!  I have the exact same issues both with age and the hulk/avenger thing, having read my first comics in the late '70's when avengers were avengers and hulk was hulk.

Truth be told the main reason I'm excited for this reveal is because it has the classic thor villain as that really hits my area of interest, although I'm always interested in any comic marvel reveal and the anticipation for this one has been building for a while.

  14. 4 minutes ago, Mirymate said:

Experience tells me don't bet against elhonez being very close to right.

I agree but as "Buff" says, ironheart would have to be in the "unmade legacy avenger" category so that still needs a different modern avenger variant I think.

Oh and I'm also glad to see you back and actively guessing even though we haven't really crossed paths much!

  15. 14 hours ago, BuffaloDelorean said:

The hints we've gotten so far:

-three modern unmade Avenger variants (including a Thor)

-a modern unmade Avenger legacy character

    -a modern unmade Avenger/X-Man variant

-a modern unmade Spider-Verse hero or anti-hero (not AU Peter Parker or an AU version of any previously made character)

-a classic unmade Asgardian villain who doesn't wear much

-a modern story specific unmade alien Hulk villain who wears a helmet and armor

Two of them are female, the unmade characters have no movie figures, two of the heroes have villainous leanings, three of the heroes are story specific, and two more heroes come out of a specific story and stuck around.

I have to say that although this wave is proving really challenging to guess, if there was a prize for being able to summarize where we are currently at you would get it so thanks for keeping it all in hand for us!  I'm reckoning people are getting pretty close with the last few guesses as Zach seems to have gone very quiet...

  16. Frog Thor would be cool though isn't it supposed to be a "modern" variant of the avengers in this wave?

In general it feels like we are getting closer to the line-up, especially on the villains now.  I don't know the red king but I looked him up and he would look great as a minimate I'm sure.

It sounds like it may be easier to guess this wave if we know who's in TRU 24.  Do we have any sense of when that may be revealed Zach (ie before or after this wave?) or indeed walgreens 6 for that matter?  Thanks as ever for your clues!

  17. 37 minutes ago, BuffaloDelorean said:

To be fair, he didn't say they couldn't both be best known as enemies of Thor. Still, the more I think about it, the more uncertain I am of Gorr. I can't think of any other unmade modern alien villains best known as opponents of specific Avengers, though.

I'd guess that the alien will be armoured, since I'm pretty confident in Ulik.

Oh ok fair enough.  I thought he said only one of them came from asgardian lore at some point but I may be wrong.  I do agree that Ulik seems very likely now though, which is great if so, although I felt the same way about skurge until yesterday...

  18. Yeah and it can't be gor the god butcher if the asgardian villain is the classic one as I don't think Zach said that both villains were thor related.  I'm personally really pleased that the asgardian villain is the classic one (thanks for the info Zach) and can only imagine that ulik or maybe surtur are well known enough to be made other than the already discounted movie ones?  I still have also have absolutely no clue who the modern one could be, and let's not also forget that one of them wears armour!  I'm still really surprised it's not skurge.

  19. 8 hours ago, BuffaloDelorean said:

That's too bad, I was really hoping it was him. From the brief glimpse we got of him in the trailer, he was kind of comic-y, but it wasn't an exact likeness. I doubt I'll be able to find any of the non-LCS assortments, but it's nice that he's being released in some form.

Now I have no idea who either of the 74 villains could be. Can you give any other clues?

Yeah I was hoping it was him too, though any new classic thor villain would still be great in my book.  Without wishing to derail this thread any more I don't know whether you are prepared to say whether it's the "classic" or the modern villain that's the asgardian one Zach?

The one BHM posted, from the TMNT thread:

Oh ok, thanks.  I hadn't read that thread and thus seen the reply.  As it was back in February, those of us (ie me!) hoping that executioner is indeed in wave 74 can hope that the wave simply hadn't been finalised back then.

  21. 2 hours ago, BuffaloDelorean said:

Looking at that list, Zach said that two characters would be made. We're obviously getting Toad and Marvel Girl, so does that mean Executioner is out for wave 74, since he was listed too?

What list are we talking about?

  22. 11 hours ago, BuffaloDelorean said:

Waves 74, 75, TRU 24, and TRU 25 are supposed to hit this year (I think) so that might help break it up.

I hope they'll come a bit sooner, though. Both this set and the Ragnarok one are slated for late December, which is around two months after the release date for Ragnarok. Between GotG vol. 2 and Homecoming, I thought we'd moved past the later releases, but I guess we'll see.

I'm guessing wave 74 and 75 will actually come out later as they haven't been announced/solicited yet?  I have hopes to see TRU24 and 25 sooner though.
