  1. So I am massively happy these days to see Minimate photocomics making a comeback again.

I'm glad to see guys like Mini-Myte and Crimson Monkey bring them back in vogue, makes me long for the good ol' days when I was new to Minimates and MMHQ's old "JP1000 and Friends" series got me hooked.

That said, I've made no secret of my being an aspiring writer and I have an absurdly long list of fun/weird/random storylines I made up for my Minimates and wished to actually recreate on film someday, but until I have enough money, free time, camera skills or half-decent comedic timing that's probably going to be a bit of a long way off. :pinch:

So this is going to be my first "custom thread" of sorts, basically a dumping ground for all the silly Minimate comic ideas I keep wanting to make into actual picfics. Feel free to post your own wacky pitches here. I'll start things off:

    Harry Needs A Ride

My very first Minimates were Spider-Man and Harry/New Goblin from the SM3 movie waves, so they're going to be the sort of main protagonists of my hypothetical comic. It's no secret that the foot peg on Harry's glider doesn't actually work for C3 feet so I made up this random storyline where Harry's glider needs to be sent to Tony Stark for repairs (since at this time he still had rocky relations with Norman) and he need to find an alternate mode of transport for the interim. Expect a whole bunch of My Little Pony gags.

    "Ladies and Gentlemen, Tony Stark!"

This is more of a one-off single panel comic idea, but I'd always wanted to imagine what it would be like if Tony Stark was a guest star on Top Gear. This comic involves quick customs of Jeremy Clarkson and the Stig, and some Star In A Reasonably-Priced Car shenanigans involving one of Tony's many armors.

    Development Hell

Harry attempts his own stage production of Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. Hilarity ensues. (The staging eventually gets canceled after Harry's script accidentally gets sold to the BBC and recycled as a Doctor Who episode. The Great Glass Elevator prop also gets recycled into a TARDIS prop.)

    Mary Jane Kicks Mephisto's Butt

You know you wanna see it.

    Bizarre Love Triangle

Besides Pete and Harry, some of my other recurring characters include Matt and Elektra and Kate and Renee. This one's about Kate coming to grips with Renee's super-hot ex, Morrigan Aensland.

    Moonlighting

Tony doesn't know that his chauffeur Happy Hogan also moonlights as a lawyer.

If you've seen the Daredevil movie, you'll know why this is funny.

    Anger Management

Matt tries to be supportive as Elektra attends an anger management group.

Who is the Hawk of Fate?

Some of you may remember my partner from the last Minimate Hunt Contest. This is a multi-part arc about the Hawk of Fate's backstory.

That's all I can remember from the top of my head so far. I'll be sure to keep this updated in case I dig up my other ideas from storage! ;)

  2. NECRO!!

There's some shots of DST's C2E2 booth being set up at Action Figure Insider and the MVC3 poster is being displayed: http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/main/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/DSTC2E21.jpg

so I guess it's safe to assume these are still coming, they just aren't allowed to talk about them yet?.... so they're like Fight Club?

Aww, nuts. I was hoping to zoom in on that picture to find some new Minimate scoop, but looks like it's low-res.

Anyway, thanks for the heads-up baghead! Nice to know that the MvC3 scare may just be a minor previewing snafu.

  3. Is this thread still alive?

Just wondering if there are any Micro Machines fans in here, 'cause I just found an interesting flashback from 1997:

So that's what Nineties-era Toy Fair looks like. Also, I feel kind of sorry for the pitch-women presenting the toys, for some reason.

  4. Good to see the impromptu Horsemen of Apocalypse primer, guys! While I never kept close track of everybody who's been a Horseman, I do know enough about Christian eschatology to be familiar with the reasoning behind the concept.

Can anybody tell me if Apocalypse and his Horsemen ever appeared at length in the 90s X-Men cartoon? I'm pretty sure the Death version of Archangel must have showed up at some point, but who played the other three Horsemen then? At least I remembered how X-Men Evolution turned Magneto, Professor X, Storm and (I think?) Mystique into Horsemen shortly before the series finale.

He says he has a plan, but I kinda doubt it.

    Sounds like Battlestar Galactica

  5. Just managed to check out this thread and I'm liking this little alternate universe you created :D

It's cool how you managed to keep the teasers subtle while still managing to give us tangible hints on exactly how different this "elseworlds" version of the Marvel Universe is. The "Hey look! A penny!" pic was hilarious, and I liked the composition of all the fallen heroes' stuff in the frame.

I think I've figured out what a bunch of the teasers mean though. I especially like the ones of

    a renegade Havok

    and

Black Bolt in a trenchcoat surrounded by the fallen cosmic heroes

. Can't wait for the first chapter! :)

  6. Been following news of the Japan quake quite nervously ourselves, had to show my Mom what channel NHK World (the Japan-based network) was on just in case anything else came up. They just put up a tsunami warning for the major coastal areas here, just crossing our fingers there won't be any more serious damage. Just horrific.

  7. Snyder has proven himself very good at "style." But I haven't seen anything overly original from him yet that gave me reason to be optimistic about Superman.

The irony here is that Sucker Punch is supposed to be Snyder's big original project to showcase his full cinematic chops in... lousy luck I guess that something "original" could turn out so egregiously derivative of Japanese media tropes. It's no Inception, I'll tell you that.

  8. This Jap fixation with packaging is almost beyond belief...you receive the parcel from Japan, you remove the string around the parcel, you remove the brown paper ,you open the brown shipping carton ,you remove the factory case from the carton, you sever the carton seal, you open the blind box,you remove the cellophane baggie, you open the baggie....& now you unravel the apron that surrounds the figure....

Sorry, I clearly have nothing mature to add to the topic :P

But I do sort of agree what a weird complex the Japanese seem to have about their toys/collectibles; we're talking about the culture that pretty much revolutionized the blind-boxing & gashapon practice, because clearly just grabbing the one you want from a shelf just isn't challenging enough

  9. HOLY SHIT ITS DEADLY GENESIS!!! right?! right?! please someone tell me im right

    edit: my facts;

ok so ya this is unlikley but if you think about the line up....

beast (the only actual original x-men on the team, he may take cyclops role in returning from kroaka)

havok (basically same powers as vulcan but well known...also a summers)

darwin (why else would he be here?!)

angel salvadore (people want her dead)

moiria mactaggart (she had a big part in DG right?)

banshee (havok will kill him like vulcan did)

azazel and mystique (since this is leading up to next genesis...well you know.. ;) )

magneto (hes the main villain gotta have him even if the story is screwed up)

emma still doesnt make sense to me unless charles goes to her looking for mutants (the scene with angel 'preforming' for erik and charles could be an 'audition' ) and the scenes we have seen could still lead up to this (plenty of footage from the blackbird over water and island footage) so just think about it

If it helps, the original Deadly Genesis comic had a scene where Xavier tried to recruit Emma Frost for the Krakoa rescue, which somehow got amnesia'd out of her by the time the truth came out.

This is an interesting but still somewhat questionable theory. On the one hand this could provide an explanation for why Jean and Scott aren't in this movie despite being established as Xavier's first students in X-trilogy canon. On the other hand I'm not too sold on making Havok a bad guy, especially if he's supposed to stand in for Vulcan. Deadly Genesis might actually make for a good X-Men movieverse story, but not like... this.

  10. My gut feeling tells me that Howard Stark is going to be the variant. I wonder if RDJ is going to be playing the younger version of his Dad too?

Liking most of the parts for this wave, but... Red Skull. Eugh. I can't tell if it's a good or bad thing that his face looks so grody. And somehow I expected Dum Dum's bowler hat to be smaller. And every time I see that Hydra Flameblower guy I keep thinking it's Snake Eyes!

Peggy was Sharon's aunt in the comics

........After Quacktain America died ,Eggy Carter fell in love with Howard Stark, who after experimentation with contaminated Super-soldier serum became 'Howard the Duck' . Eggy fell preggnant.....this was post-war America & the shame of being a single mother was too much for her to bear.... Eggy Carter married Howard & changed her name to Della Duck . Della Duck eventually had four sons Shaney ,Danny,Lukie & Ady, the first three were identical triplets whilst the fourth, younger brother Ady could only be politely described as an ugly duckling. The rest is history ... 'Shaney,Danny & Lukie ' both featured in comics alongside their uncle, 'Donster Duck' & great -uncle 'Scrooge Mc.TBT' whilst 'Howard the Duck' became famous after battling 'Rad-Thing' in the Norfolk Everglades.

Whatever happened to Ady Duck ? Does anybody know an Ady Duck or C...a...r........

It's a good thing you already own a farm, BHM. Saves us the trouble of sending you there :P

  11. I don't see why some of you think that hype will go down in five months. Fighting game crowds play these games for MONTHS after release. This isn't just some new forgettable game that comes out every once in a while. This is a sequel to a cult classic that fans have enjoyed for YEARS, to the point where it's still played in major cash tournaments, that I don't see why it should be any different for MvC3. And with the possibility of more DLC characters, which MvC 1&2 didn't even have, this is definitely going to go on strong.

If you don't believe me, go on eBay or even GameStop and look at what any version of MvC2 is going for. Also look for the figures on eBay. There is definitely enough demand for a really old game and really old figures, so these Minimates should grab some of these people's attention.

Thanks for the feedback, Dio. As a non-gamer this train of thought wasn't something I considered before.

Everybody loves to cite Street Fighter wave 1 as a sign that this license is doomed to fail, but as BHM mentioned before those were vastly underrated waves that came pretty early in Minimate history and so may have had several factors working against them. Of course there's no guaranteeing the same issues won't hound MvC3 this time around, but I like to think that back then Minimates were still finding their voice (having just been newly acquired by DST at the time), and with the Marvel mates having made it to 37 waves this line might stand a better chance.

I bought what I could of the SF mates because I appreciated their nostalgia factor, though by the time I discovered them the line had already been dead and buried. Marvel still has an audience and people are still enjoying the games, who's to say that this line can't make both work in their favor?

  12. Nice set of reveals so far.

I still say that Jean Grey hairpiece is Medusa-esque. Quibbles over the length aside, the shape is just too reminiscent of her War Of Kings-era look.

Otherwise the Capcom mates, Misters Sinister and tied-up Spidey are pretty nifty. I'm also surprised at us getting another Psylocke so soon, and one of her cheesiest looks to boot! And, uh, I'd be happy to take anybody's Morrigans off their hands ;)
