  1. Didn't imagine that a small note like that would make one the topic of a discussion...

Well, I guess Mr. BHM's intention was to make clear that beeing a German does mean to have an amazing amount of self control. (At the expense of any sense of humour.) It's just like beeing from England implies to loose football championships.

    :P

But Fo Shizzle, I'm indeed going to not touch the present until christmas, but after opening it I will of course try to guess who my Secret Santa is. And there are some clues I do have right now. There are members from other European countries as well - like Aapje is from Holland -, but the stamp on the package was a royal one, so UK seems to be right...

  2. As Jesus once pointed out to the lads when equating what the poor widow had put in the collection box at the temple. She contributed two coins ,no longer in circulation ,whilst many other more fortunate people were puttings in wads of cash & gold.

Jesus wanted the lads to realise that whilst some gave of their surplus the poor widow gave everything she had . ;)

Nice thought, BHM, but let's stick to the topic! This is about Christmas, not religion, love, hapiness and stuff...

    :P

Seriously, I see it the same way as you pointed out with your analogy and karamasov and Reideen did before. I'd be really glad, when I get something from my list, but I'm absolutely fine and happy with anything else. (Well, maybe Luke's present would suck a little, but...) I just love to see that gift from somebody I don't really know - and in my case surely even from another country - under the tree on christmas eve. It's a really nice thought. Globalization in a slightly different way.

    :whistling:

    :captainbritain:

    Dear Mr. :captainbritain:,

the google language tool says, that Mr. Harris said:

"You can talk of happiness that you are not my "cuckoo child" are, rather Buttheadsmate, namely else would you get nothing, because cheeky children go empty at the end or even get the rod to feel! (Or art thou but it, I should be in the mail again to see ...)".

  4. Woohoo, I got a secret child as well, which makes me an official MMMV Secret Santa! santasmiley.gif

Being a Secret Santa is ...er...er...um OK but "I got a secret child" .....Das Kuckuckskind

    :P

  5. I just got a call by UPS Germany telling me, that the mates already arrived here (woohoo!), but customs duty office is holding them back (boo!), because they don't belive, that the package is a won prize (which I can't believe as well, but: yay!)

So, I did contact Matt asking him to write a confirmation, that says the shipped mates are a won prize and not an order I placed in an online shop. So everything depends on him... :(

Does anyone know, if he checks emails - I answered the address I got the you-won-email from - or do I have to contact DST, or?!?

  6. ....ol' Snorkasaurus is erudite enough to navigate Wiki & is always willing to learn  Unfortunately I never learned to speak German & my knowledge of it is confined to German titles of X Files episodes, Bayern Munich,Sepp Blatter & Germany 1 England 5. I generally speak German once a year in Austria when ordering my ski-pass ,ordering lager ,gluhwein & germknodels & negotiating bail conditions for one or two of my friends. Your German is superb however  .... as is your English.

I had to google wer zum Teufel Sepp Blattler is, now I know. Thanks. I'm so not into football, you won't believe, but I do know that "Germany 1 England 5" is wrong. To quote one of your own: "Football is a simple game: 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans win."

But the way you learned German phrases I did learn my Spanish ones. I can say "donde esta la zapateria?" because of Pulp Fiction and "Médico, por favor" because of No Country For Old Men (Which both are superb movies!)

Poor bastard. . .you clearly have not seen the Wire . . .

I've heard of the Wire and everybody spoke highly of it, but I think it's not available in Germany, yet. Is it really that good?

    And, by the way:

    :offtopic:

    Sorry, Mulder.

  7. Yes I think you did. Although the X-Files had begun to burn out way before Mulder left ,once he had gone the show began to pick up . Once that show left the Pacific NW there was a lot of 'unruhe' in the cast & as Heidegger wrote - 'Sein und zeit'.

Impressive. Most impressive! Martin has taught you well. I didn't know that ol' Snorkasaurus is erudite.

Nevertheless, thanks for the hint! I agree, that the show lost it's charme even when Mulder was still in it. I was a fan of the relationship between Mulder and Scully, so I thought, particularly when the show burned out at the Mulder/Scully end, there's no reason to keep on watching it with that new sidekick. Maybe, if I have the time someday, I'll give it a second chance.

  8. This reminded me of one of the most critically acclaimed comics to come along in a while--MAUS. Very unsettling, though.

Spiegelman, yes. A really tough book to read. Brilliant but tough. The I Killed Adolf Hitler thing is completely different, a-historic - you know, time-travelling and stuff - but also features those anthromorphic characters. I really like the calm mood of it.

  9. I wasn't into comics for a long time (I guess since the early 90ies) and started reading again in 2005, so there are some of recommendations listed here, I'm interested in as well. Here's what I suggest:

Trekker already mentioned it, but I'd like to bring this out again: go, read Watchmen, if you haven't.

Hellboy et. al., Mignola (Dark Horse): I really like the way this series is drawn and the way it deals with folklore and lovecraftian horror themes.

New Avengers, Bendis (Marvel): There are 7 volumes out there yet, dealing with the new assembled team. I really like that new team, because some of its members (Spidey, Wolverine, Cap, Sentry) are my favorite Marvel characters.

The Dark Knight returns, Miller (DC): I guess one of the groundbreaking Batman stories so far.

I'm just staring to read Superman: Red Son, which seems to be pretty nice and I'm also starting to read the things happening after Captain Americas dead, which seem to be pretty awesome as well.

I don't know, if you're into non-superhero comics as well, but if you are, here are some recommendations that came to mind:

I killed Adolf Hitler, Jason (Fantagraphics): A pretty short (sadly only 50 pages!) what-if story with fabolouse kind of humor about contract killers, time travelling and growing old.

Blankets, Thompson (Top Shelf): A just beautiful autobiographical (around 600 pages!) story about religion, growing up and love.

Persepolis, Satrapi (Pantheon): An autobiographical, very delightful, funny and intelligent story about the authors childhood and youth in Iran.

Désoeuvré, Trondheim (I guess Fantagraphics): An autobiographical (yes, I'm really into stuff like that!) journey of artist Trondheim himself, reflecting on getting old. Hilarious and melancholic, but I don't know if it's translated into english, yet.

  10. Yeah good luck with that.. in theory a good idea, in reality it's not feasible.

Firstly Please do not contact NASA "on behalf of the Multiverse". Armstrong and his team have worked very hard to build a relationship with them and if this sort of thing was to happen is should go through someone like Neil.

Secondly having a lot of people say they will chip in and 'count me in' is VERY different from having people actually put their money where their mouth is.

Trust me you're flogging a dead horse with this one...

    Bob.

  11. Thanks jcastick and Jenny.

I definitely thought about putting something not minimate-related in the package as well, but just wanted to mention, that it might be that I can't fullfill the concrete wishes my secret child has because of the conditions here, but I will do my best to be a kind santa. I hope there will be some fine ideas popping up, when I know my secret child's name and browse a little through the threads.
