  1. Hello all...

Customs aren't my thing so I haven't been following along with this thread very closely but I wanted to let those who are participating know (especially you later-starters) that the Toyfare magazine that came out about 2 weeks ago has a great article on Zombification and making custom zombies. It includes some great how-to tips and step-by=step instuctions and uses a SW unleashed slave Leia as an example.

Some good tips on sculpting and painting.

No mention of taking your zombie picture with boobs though - probably an oversight

    Have fun Zombifiers!

  2. I'd add Master & Commander, because it does such a great job of portraying the feel of the Patrick O'Brian novels.

Midway is a great war movie with lots of great stars.

Titanic is pretty good as far as historical accuracy, but only if Leonardo DiCaprio was thrown to the giant shark in Jaws in the first 5 minutes of the movie.

  3. Like Star Wars, Star Trek has a significant generation gap that cannot be ignored. There are fans who grew up on the modern versions and have little or no interest in the "old stuff." I found it interesting that even when you used my Star Wars analogy, you ignored the prequels, which have been a significant source of revenue for Hasbro and other Star Wars licensees over the last eight years. You're startin' to look like a biased old codger, Reideen. ;)

Prequels? Lucas never made prequels to the SW trilogy.... ;)

I've got a couple of boys who were born in the '90's. They actually like Episodes I-III and consider them superior to the later trilogy. Amazing. And yet, original Star Wars seems to sell better in comic shops. Could this be because the newer generation of nerds doesn't hang in comic shops? That they're too busy with Halo 3?

As for Trek: Bring on all the bridge crews! Granted, I'll buy nearly any 'Mate, but a revolving series of Trek would work for me: a TOS wave, followed by a TNG wave, then a DS9 wave, you get the idea. One or two bad guys in each wave for exciting space-fu fight scenes....

I'm with you - I'd like to see the bridge crew/main characters and main aliens from all of the franchises be the priority before alternate-uniform characters.

The proposal of mixed-franchise waves that focus on combinations of main characters and aliens/supporting characters seems like one of the best ways to maximize interest in the license.

I think there's so much to do with the main characters, key supporting characters and aliens that the license could go for many, many, many waves as it is, without milking 15 variations on TOS Kirk, Spock & McCoy.

As it is.... I'm probably looking to get only partials sets of ST Wave 2 & 3, because there's characters that I'm just not interested in (Shirtless Sulu, Bread & Circuses Kirk, Dress Uniform Kirk & Spock). If those waves included aliens or other characters like Kyle, Rand or Chapel, I'd make sure to get them all.

  4. Wouldn't a M*A*S*H set be cool. In a couple of waves you could get all kinds of cool characters:

Captain Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce (in Maroon Bathrobe & Cowboy hat)

    Cpl. Walter "Radar" O'Reilly

    Lt. Col. Henry Blake

    Father Francis Mulcahy

    Maj. Frank Burns

    Maj. Margaret Hot Lips Houlihan

    Cpl. Maxwell Klinger (In Drag)

    Captain "Trapper" John McIntire

    Cpl. Maxwell Klinger (Fatigues)

Captain Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce (Hawaiian Shirt & Fatigues)

    Colonel Sherman T. Potter

    Major Charles Emerson Winchester

    Col. Flag

  5. Why DST is dicking around exclusively in TOS Land baffles me. I REALLY wish they'd take notice of DC Direct's wildly varied character assortments and mix things up. Gimme four 2-packs from different incarnations in each wave.

Not every Trekkie likes ALL Star Trek. Some folks ain't gonna wait around for DST to finally offer 'mates based on DS9 or ENT or VOY or the films. The next assortment should look like this:

Picard & Borg Queen (First Contact)

    Quark & Morn (DS9)

    Chakotay & Torres (VOY)

    T'Pol & Tucker (ENT)

Actually, the mixed-franchise waves is about the best idea yet. When it comes to collecting SW or ST, nothing kills my interest faster than having to wait through wave after wave after wave of variants of the same 2 characters. At least with this proposal, there'd be 1 or 2 sets that'd be interesting in each wave.

  6. I'd personally like to see at least one more wave as I don't feel that we've got enough aliens/adversaries. I need (more) Klingons, Romulans, perhaps an Andorian, and others before we shift gears.

We can get all sorts of aliens as they branch out. Andorians had a big part in "Enterprise", Klingons and Romulans from "ST:TNG", The Borg from "Voyager" and Cardassians, Ferengi and Jem'Hadar from "DS9". "DS9" had the best aliens.

It's true that the aliens can continue throughout all lines, but I think that some Aliens have had a distinctly different look from one series to the other.... or at least between Original Trek, Enterprise and TNG/DS9/Voyager.

The classic TOS aliens like the Andorians, Romulans & Klingons should appear in their vintage look, which was very characteristic of the entire series. I also think there are some "Signature" aliens that are also very characterisitc of the look of ST:TOS that would represent the line (and the series) well including: Salt Vampire, Gorn (already done), Talosian, Bele & Loki.

I do agree that DST shouldn't waste a lot of time with a lot of the alternate appearance versions of Kirk & crew (Bread and Circuses Kirk, Dress Uniform, etc) and proceed through each of the Star Trek series, making sure to cover the main crew, recurring crew characters and some signature non-crew.

  7. Can you get these anywhere other than online or a local Comic shop? (Especially the 24set!)

Your best bet is a comic store or retailer that regularly stocks minimates (FYE, Suncoast, San Goody). I've found that these usally show up in specialty-only stores, though I've been surprised to find some minimates a Hot Topic and Virgin Megastore.

If you don't have a local comic store, I'd have to say that the internet is your best bet.

    Happy hunting

  8. Does anybody have the 24 mates, and if so, could you post some pics please?

    Sorry these aren't better...

Nice accessories, Pistol w/ silencer, pistol, blackberry, cell phone & opening briefcase.

Very nice detail and good quality - my ability to master my wife's camers doesn't do them justice.

And for all that will ask... commando. Enough Said.

  9. luke314pi - What block figures boast more articulation than Minimates (other than Shockini's which are a different height and arent really to my preference)? I suppose extra details never hurt so you cant go wrong with additional paint app's.

Although im a big fan of the Stikfas delta boy extreme im not a big fan of the elbow design (i.e. ball joints at the elbow). To much has to be done to hide that style of joint there in order to make it look more natural.

Reideen1313 - Im all for the additional torso joint. Theres ZERO reason that it couldnt be added on the smooth standard Mate body. Certain figures with accessories might make that difficult but it wouldnt be impossible. What figure line is that picture from? Does that figure have ball jointed elbows?

I dig the shoulder design it has (small hinges). The Futurama figures are like that and were REAL close to being perfect. It seems like if you combined the stikfas , Mates and Futurama I-Men youd have the perfect mini. Pricey but perfect

I 100% agree regarding the swivel bicep. Thats the ONLY reason i got back into Minimates is because of the swivel bicep issue. Minimates are cool but the swivel arm makes them border line great for me. Like Nervous i grew up on and was spoiled by the GI Joe standard articulation. Anything short of that wont get my money. Ever.

captain_cbecker - what would be a perfect hip design for you on the mate body? hinges or simply wider ball joints?

    To answer your question....

I think hinged hips would look the best, but I also hate to trade on the articulation.

That being said, maybe a little closer fit between the thighs and the hip/lower torso piece would make them look a little more robust without giving up the articulation.

  10. Well.... the perfect mate would be free and available within 30 seconds after it was announced. However, that's not exactly realistic.

Swivel biceps would be a nice addition and allow better arm poses.

The other thing I think I'd change is the hip design. I like the swivel hips, but sometimes the figures' hips look disproportionately narrow compared to the bodies, especially when there's a coat or something.

  11. Now this is a great example of squeezing out two new characters using mostly existing parts. I believe the Kat hair piece is new and the back-mounted Cylon gun is new of course, but the rest is a rehash that makes perfect sense. Hopefully DST can also put together a similar set to get us Anders, Tory, Leoben, etc.

I don't mind these re-hash mates at all.... I like the idea of being able to get a few more original characters and getting a more complete character set. Using the same idea, Hot Dog and Racetrack would be 2 more easy adds.

That doesn't mean that I'd like to see at least one last wave that rounds out all the human cylon models like Leoben, Cavil, Doral, Simon, Tory & Anders.

  12. It's not on the Diamond Shipping list though.

Someone in another thread is saying that thier LCS has it on the ship list...

    http://www.minimatemultiverse.com/index.php?showtopic=3490

I've learned that the DST web site's dates are completely unreliable (i have to admit, they do narrow it down to the correct year) and are subject to change...and change.... and then change again and then still not quite match the release date. Even the e-tailers have given up on keeping the dates current on their sites. And then there's that whole left coast-right coast dynamic that is mostly anecdotal.

Add to the mix the BTTF.com people, who should seem closer to this than anyone (and therefore the best informed).

I don't know if I should be excited about a release this week or not

I was getting ready for a LCS trip tomorrow afternoon....

Sometimes the release dates really piss me off.
