  1. ... I'm wondering if the market for Trek stuff is pretty well dried up.

    More like saturated.

There's oodles of Trek stuff because retailers overbought. Apparently they were expecting Star Wars: Episode VII rather than Star Trek 2.0. Yes, this might be a more kid-friendly Trek but it's better to sell through and have to reorder than sit on excess and obsolete inventory.

Playmates still plans on releasing a second wave of figures this fall, probably to tie in with the home video release. Hopefully by then retailers will be able to clearance most of the current figures so they can stock the new ones. I really want to finish my Bridge and Transporter playsets and don't want to wait for another Trek movie to do so.

About the only one that's in good shape on ST(2009) is Target - they stocked sooo little, that they've barely had any stock at all.

I too folded and got the 3.75" figure set 'cause that bridge was too darn cool to pass on. I'm waiting to round out wave 2 so I can get the pieces finished.

Sorry to hear about the Borg wave - I was lookin' forward to adding 7 of 9 to my collection.

Seems like the DST classic ST stuff (as well as the BSG) is moving at TRU - these always seem to come in and go out regularly, so I don't think it's all about the ST property. The hotwheels 1:50 Starship die cast are also blowing off the shelves.

It's also not only the ST stuff that's clogging the pegs... has anyone checked out SW lately - same old assortments of lousy characters - anyone building an army of 6-breasted women and obscure cantina aliens?

BTW - Walmart did a price cut to move these a little better - 6" line went from $9.99 to $6.96 and the 3.75" went from $6.99 to $4.96.

  2. I think this will be a good movie but I hope they dont leave out as much as they did in the last movie. Plus, this will be the last movie for most of the main actors, who are getting too old and dont really want to do it anymore. But, the Order of the Phoenix looks promising anyway.

    WHAT?

I'm not even sure how we got from BSG to Harry Potter...

perhaps someone should put away the model glue before posting <_<

wait so are they making harrypotter minimates

No more glue for you either.

  3. I usually have good luck with them - I've never had things marked "in-stock" delay shipping more than a day.

I ordered the Kyle Reese PX set on Wednesday Morning and they had it in a box and shipped by Wednesday eve (standard shipping)

Originally I didn't understand the difference between "In Stock" (on hand and ready to ship) and "available" (needs to be ordered from DST) which caused delays - but they've never let me down.

I recently ordered the T2 singles from them, but they only got part of the assortment, so I had to wait an extra week to ship, but got it promptly.

The other thing I like is that they usually use USPS priority mail - which is soooo much faster than those UPS-ground dirtbags, who take their sweet-ass time just to remind you that you paid for the slow service.

    #%$%^#% UPS

  5. I can actually imagine a feasible way for the canopies to slide open at that scale, I guess DST either didn't have the time/resources or just didn't feel the need to engineer them that way seeing as they're still being cautious about bringing BSG minimates back in the first place.

I think cost is a big factor - some considerations may include:

    minimum number of parts

design that's easy to execute at the factory level

design that doesn't take a lot of fitting, fine tuning or assembly

  6. Okay - I'll play...

    I'm thinking:

    Peg-Leg Gaeta w/ Modern Red-Stripe Cylon

Prophet Baltar w/ Red Dress & Boots Six or Natalie

    Racetrack w/ President Lee Adama

    Lampkin w/ Razor-style, red-stripe cylon

Battle damaged Razor Cylonw/ Colonial Marine

From how TRU waves 1 & 2 are presented, it seems that DST corrected one of the original issues that (IMO) caused the last waves to sell slow and cancel the original concepts for waves 5, 6 & New Caprica - you gotta have at lease 1 cylon or principal character in each pack (bold face). Packs that are all Seelix, Racetrack and obscure, background characters are likely to die on the table ala wave 5 & 6. (Anyone notice how many cylon variants appeared in the new TRU waves, compared to Waves 3-6)

I'd be on board for a MK II Viper and Raptor - I'm not to excited about the design of the Raiders (becasue they didn't actually have canopies or cylons inside)

  7. And given that those figures don't add tax and the shipping charges many of us endure because we don't have access to aq regular LCS, the amount is still a bit higher.

However, since I'm not a completist and will pass on a fair amount of the Marvel as well as the Amazon Set, this isn't really too unmanageable - I'd say that I'd spend more if I ate take-out @ $10/week for the year - and I'd rather have minimates than McDonald's or Taco Bell any day -

My collection isn't a hardship for me or my family, but I try and pass on other "luxuries" like eating out and other stuff as an offset.

  8. I'm actually quite happy w/ the current arsenal that is coming with the current waves of mates and they seem to do a good job of reflecting the scale.

A couple possible causes for the change:

    1. Bulky, over-size weapons may be perceived as a little too juvenile or Fisher-Price-y as they suggest a not-for-children-under-3 mentality.

    2. Minimates are now far more confident in their masculinity and therefore don't need to over-compensate with large weapons.

  9. New Q&A: http://www.artasylum.com/blog/2009/06/askd...imates-edition/

I'm curious about the Marvel sales question: "sales in the comic channel seem to be on a slight decline." Does that mean the comic Mates are selling less?!

Comic channel refers to distribution through comic stores (in context of the questions) - sales through comic book stores have declined...

I'm sure there is some cannibalism and overlap with TRU as well as the general economic situation

  10. I really want to be on board with these but I can't bring myself to get excited about them. Maybe when I see them on a shelf it will change. There is no way to convince myself that it's worth spending $130 on an Xbox game for minimates. I can not afford to buy $60 games much less $130 ones.

Yeah, I'm in the same place - I like the GB movies, but I can't get excited about a bunch of characters that are made up exclusively for the game...

I'll pass on these unless I can steal them on eBay for next to nothing.

  11. who would have thought DST had nightcrawlers bamfing around the office.

    fixed your quote

If mine is any indication, these must be the ones that didn't make it past QC. Both hip joints are about to go and the waist/tail piece already broke. Zoinks. And one of Colonel America's knees broke almost immediately. I think I can fix Nightcrawler, and Colonel America is a zombie, so, you know, I'm not sure he really needs both legs.

Thanks for the heads up, Dark Knight. Weird that the Ultimate Spiderwoman is not listed in the wave and is instead replaced by Concept Spiderman.

Same deal here - Nightcrawler has 2 right arms and the hips are pretty stiff - I'll just have to work out trading for a left arm & hand if anyone has spares... otherwise, he's in pretty good shape

  12. I still think they would have made a plausible entry as "TRU exclusives", but seeing how the Speed Racer 'mates bombed I doubt that TRU would be willing to take a chance on these (though their exclusive 'mates and BSG 7" exclusive seem to be doing extremely well lately...Matt, Chuck?). I can't speak for others, but I know that I personally would buy cases of these (modern and/or classic) if possible.

I was thinking something along this line also. If the cases were set up similar to the Marvel TRU waves with 5 packs or even four packs to a case, we could get the rest of these essential characters in a wave or two. As an added incentive for TRU, some of the characters could be packed with toaster cylons; there are a few modern ones that could still be made and with the final episode a few of the Razor 'classic' cylons could be thrown in:

    Cavil with classic Warrior

    Kara with Leobon

    Anders and Athena

    ______ with Stealth Cylon

    Box Set:

    Ellen

    Tori

    Doral

    Simon

    Or something like that.

Wave 5 & 6 and the Caprica Box seemed to suffer from the lack of the big-name characters. If we've learned anything, it's that the universal Kirk/McFly/SPiderman/Wolverine law exists for a reason and probably applies to this line too. I think to make it work. you'd have to bundle the box set as 2 packs w/ at least an A-list, high profile characters (Apollo, Starbuck, Six, Boomer/Sharon or cylons) in each box...

    More like this:

    Cavil w/ Athena

    Kara w/ Leobon

Red Stripe (allied) Classic Cylon w/ Anders

Red Stripe (allied) Classic Cylon w/ Hot Dog (Variant)

    Captive Six w/ Ellen

    President Lee Adama w/ Tori

Red Stripe Modern Cylon w/ Doral

Red Stripe Modern Cylon w/ Simon (variant

  13. If it helps anyone else figure things out, I sent my email at 4:30 CST. Good luck, everyone else. And a great big THANK YOU to DST.

My response was sent @ 3:12 Pacific Time (4:12 Mountain. 5:12 Central, 6:12 Eastern))

  14. Honestly, I don't completely understand your post, TTF.

As for when these will pop up there, hard to say. In the past, they have "spoiled" the news of possible releases and the figures involved by posting pre-orders before anyone else, but they do seem to be dragging their feet with this one. It seems as if they post pre-orders right after something was announced, even before they have placed orders with their distributors (I've seen Hot Toys releases pop up a few hours after they were first announced). I guess this is what TTF is talking about, in that they sometimes allow for pre-orders before they actually know how much they will have to pay and how many they will be able to order for a specific thing. As such, they sometimes have to remove listings or change prices around.

Despite all that, though, BBTS and Sideshow Collectibles are the only two sites I will pre-order from--both are highly well-known/reliable, and neither charges until something comes "in stock." In that sense, BBTS is a heck of a lot more "reliable" than a number of other places I have ordered (or tried to order) from. You order something from them, you pay when they have it, and you get it from them.

I'm also a big fan of BBTS 'cause you can easily cancel pre-orders bu logging into your account instead of emailing customer service...

I know there's a few times my LCS has surprised me with something that I bought and then easily cancelled the order and avoided shipping fees.

  15. One last thought... How would people feel if this 'reboot' was taken forward as a TV show instead of movies?

JJ Abrahams involvement means that people with TV smarts are already behind it and they could tell spins on classic episodes or new tales without the big need to do the big movie story every time which could get old quickly?

    T.

Of course I'd like to see weekly Trek back on TV - I don't see it happening though... after Voyager and Enterprise disappointed Paramount, I'm pretty sure that they'd stick to their ST fix once every couple years on the big screen, and no more.
