I reached out Hellpop about the decal thread and I want to get interest going in it, again, but in the meantime I have chronicled and saved what has not been lost to things like dead links and Photobucket issues and etc, ALONG WITH SAVING THE NAMES OF EACH CREATOR. Artists deserve credit, and this way, if someone starts selling them, we can still note which stuff and from whom was it taken. I am planning to get a photo printer later in the year, and if I can get things working and going, I want to offer to print decals from that thread for folks at no cost. If it ends up costing me an arm and a leg, might be like '3 bucks per sheet' or something to try and offset costs but my plan is to try and eat the cost myself in efforts to help people, make customizing easier for folks, more approachable, and foster goodwill and encourage continued collaboration.

However, I plan to bring it up and ask people in the thread how they feel about it. If the community is not about it, I will not do it.

But yeah. Going back and seeing just how frustrating that may have been... I find it disheartening, but hopeful to try and get people jazzed and active about making custom minimates, again.

My next step, though, is to check with artists in a gaming group I run. I have 300 people in the group, with lots of artists involved. If I can get them involved- they like doing creative things- then, well, I might be able to a) find ways to pay these artists for comms and work, b) get free designs out to folks, and c) 'circulate the tapes,' the old adage of keeping fan interest and discussion going. IDK. Just throwing ideas and options out to the wall.

A couple of thoughts if you do get that going. I setup a template in my graphics apps for a custom page size of 5 1/2, X 4 3/4 and a custom page size in my printer. This basicaly makes it so I can design quarter pages of stickers. I cut the standard "letter" sized pages into quarters. This allows me to do smaller batches with less waste.

Another is you hear me complaining about painting the back of stickers white because I mostly use clear ones. I don't do enough custom work to warrant it. But they make a white toner cartridge for my printer that you can replace the black with. This allows printing some nice stickers on clear paper. If you're planning to buy a nice printer for this project, you might want to see if this feature is available.

No idea what the scale is but that's easy enough to alter when printing. The author has other Thunder Cats and MOTU vehicles as well. If interested, grab them while available. Authors change their minds all the time.

I went to https://hyper3d.ai/rodin/ to play around with ai generated 3d models. Things have come a long way. Playing with the free version I was only allowed to upload one photo. I think you can do up to 5 with the paid one. I uploaded this photo

 

And from this one photo, it generated this 3d model. I clicked a button to try to break it into parts. It wasn't great. But I might take apart a mate or one of my figures and see how it does when it can see each piece. I think before long it will be possible for anyone to generate their own model from just photos. I might investigate this as a method to do better hairpieces without having to learn 3d sculpting.

 

Note how it's smart enough to make the cape thin without being able to see the back or another angle. This to me is amazing. It's not perfect but still quite impressive from one photo.

I finally was able to figure out how to create my own minimate. Why make a regular size one though when I can make some big ones? I wanted to go big and with the help of David Radant we were able to make a few different looking Sentinels. There are some more parts for them that I still need to print (plus I need to print  decals for the biggest Sentinel yet. David did and awesome job designing the chest armors, helmet, og looking Sentinel boots, and an open hand that we can plug blast fx or a long coil into. 

I have ideas for some other large Minimates, but unfortunately free time is going to be very limited for me soon. My company gets busy in a week and stays busy through the summer. I am hoping to be able to design a new, large one once a month if things go smoothly. I have also been printing small things like weapons and such. I have also printed 2 different Cobra Hiss tanks, and have a few more G.I. Joe vehicles that I would like to print (not my designs).

Beautiful! What scale is the biggest one? Looks about 6X which is the size of my TriSentinel. I want to see someone outdo my Giant Man at 10X.  

Also, pics and stls of these HISS tanks. (assuming they were free files)

Holy sheet those are cool! How do they hold up to posing?

They pose just like a regular Minimate. It took me a lot of r&d to get the tolerances just right so that the joints were not too loose. If I would make the ball socket too big, the joints were too loose. If I made the ball socket too small, then I couldn't get arms, legs, etc to pop into them. Then there was always the chance of the knee and elbow joints cracking when putting them together. They still are not perfect, but they can hold their poses just fine. I have quite a lot of extra pieces that I think I might use to make a few dioramas of destroyed Sentinels and then sell them so that people can pose their X-Men with them. Maybe a couple Sentinel heads laying in some rubble, something like that for the little dioramas.

The largest one was printed at 500% in the Bambu Studio app . It is a tad over 13 inches. The others are 400%, about 11 inches. The boots on them give them a little extra height I believe. Everything was designed to fit a regular Minimate and then just blown up bigger and adjusted accordingly.

I paid for the HISS files. I have free Cobra Fang stls though if you want it. It needs to be printed at about 110%-115%. I just printed part of it at 108% and I think that is a bit small even though a Minimate fits in it. I can also send you the files for the Sentinel chest armor, helmet, hands and feet tomorrow. Just send me your email and I will get them to you.

Have you posted pics of your Giant Man? I can't recall seeing him. I will look back through this thread and take a look.

Giant Man and some Sentinels on Page 2. Giant Man is 1000 %.   Sentinels 500% and 300%.

Aren't self printed giant mates the coolest thing ever? Printing my first Sentinel was just awesome!

I don't know how I missed your post showing your Sentinels and Giant Man. Do you know what brand and color filament you used for the arms and legs of the original looking/colored Sentinels? I could not find something that matched up quite right. 

Also, yes, every little accomplishment I made when creating my own Minimate was huge to me. I have a ton to learn yet though. Thankfully YouTube has tons of Blender videos to help me learn more. I am looking forward to seeing what else I can accomplish when creating my own Minimate parts.

I just buy cheap plastic whatever is available. I couldn't find a match for that purple colour which is why Tri-Sentinel never got enhanced. The reddish tone you chose looks good and is what I used when I couldn't find the more purple one. If you look at my Sentinels, you can see that some are printed in that colour as well.

Attempt 2 with AI generated block figure heads.

Some of you may have seen my classic BSG block figure prints. I had stumbled across some insectoid heads and got it in mind to create an Ovion though the heads I found did not look like an Ovion or wouldn't 3d print.. These were the backstabbing insectoid aliens that the humans visited immediately after the Cylon massacre.

I re-uploaded a hat customizer, similar to the skirt customizer from the other day. Lots of parameters but the hats are still somewhat simple and mostly cowboyish. You can change up quite a few options.

I had a go a whipping up a 3d model of my waist riser that I cut and glued together out of styrene. Nothing to fancy, but good practice to dust of my limited skills

Always the belle of the ball, Kor is sporting the latest in waist risers from the Liney Spring 2026 collection. Note the bold lines bringing an elegance and simplicity to the piece. A must have for any block figure looking to discretely increase their stature.

I never realized what a short-ass Kor is. Surprising he's such a good sport and doesn't seem to have a Napolean complex.  

Modern Apollo and a Franken-Blockman for scale. Usually that's Kor's job and you can see how happy he is to be on the other side for once.

 

 

Some feedback for Liney. The hole seems a good size. It was not a tight fit to get the piece on. The width seems exact to torso width and sits basically flush. The depth of the riser is greater than a waist piece but a little short of the torso depth. The torso muffin tops a little over the riser front to back. It was not a tight fit over the waist. There is some wiggle room (with Kor anyway) between the hip piece and the "wings" that come down. We know there is some variation in Mate size but I think you'll be good even with the biggest pieces that are out there.

Now there will be three of us with designs to find when you search Minimates on Thingiverse. LOL Welcome.

Sizing is certainly a challenge - I have a control group of 7 mates I measure and get a different measurement for each of them.

I modelled this with the recent Luke Cage boxset mates, which I think is the newest body where the hip measures 11.3x9.27x2.7mm, and the styrene one is a very snug fit.

Trying it on battle damage Kirk its roomy and can twist a bit - his hip measures 10.7x9.26x2.75mm
