elhonez Posted July 22 Author Posted July 22 (edited) Council of Seven ...which weren't as straightforward as you might imagine. I mean the first five were pretty clear, but then it was revealed that they're basically a revolving door, so for the last couple I had to pick the two most significant combatants from the final donnybrook. And the eighth? Well the Co7 reappeared later and were represented as more of an army by then. So this wave gets a nice AB. Two actually, but that's another story... Coming soon! elhonez Posted July 22 Author Posted July 22 Also: great work BHM! Your faculties of language never fail to impress. Quote
elhonez Posted July 26 Author Posted July 26 As an aside, I'm looking forward to taking a break after the final wave and box set (and then the "lost wave" for PMIF). But there will be an unrelated surprise release, and a sort of coda/exclamation mark for the end of MOKF. By the numbers, I have 28 mates left to complete/share, then the surprise release. Quote

elhonez Posted July 29 Author Posted July 29 The Council of Seven Yes, OK, I will admit to scraping the very bottom of the barrel for this one. I was originally only going to do the robed guy as an army builder, but just look at the madness of Mr. Luchador-slash-glam-metal-rocker to the upper right! After seeing him I couldn't not do them all, even if some are underwhelming. But first a disclaimer: I have been considering more lately the subject of attribution; I realize I haven't typically given all the requisite credits where they are due, so here goes: Firstly, none of this would be possible without Barry and co. So much of my stuff is hybrid-QC, or at minimum it uses all sorts of awesome portraits and parts, such that literally all of my customs owe a debt of gratitude to the DST MiniMate team. Secondly, Luke has contributed so much to the community, including the templates from which I build my designs when decals are called for. I also frequently use his male chest and female chest templates as jumping-off points for decals. Many thanks to all! On to the mates... The Council is yet another group enlisted by Fu Manchu to [say it in unison] kill Shang-Chi. Most of them failed, and then ate poison capsules so as to avoid facing the wrath of Fu Manchu. The first few are easily numbered based on their appearance in Giant-Size Master of Kung-Fu #1, but then as it's revealed their numbers are essentially "evergreen" and constantly being replaced, the individuals rapidly become dispensable and not particularly unique. But I picked the most prominent members to be my seven, and threw in their garb as regular army builders as a bonus (as seen in MOKF #27). #1 and #2: "The Twins," not much to say here. #3 and #5: 3 is that garishly festooned, morning star-wielding maniac who captured my heart and inspired me to do the whole run. 5 is the woman who is wearing a bandage on her thigh, the result of an errant shuriken wound (an occupational hazard in the 616) that she leveraged to get close to Shang-Chi. #6 and #7: In the final GSMOKF melee, these two were the most prominent combatants. #4 and the Army Builder: I dub #4 as such because he was the fourth to appear, and wore the standard robes of the Seven. This is the true army builder look, but I included the studded-harness-and-loincloth version as an eighth character here from their appearance in MOKF #27. So this is a full-on army builder pack. There is one character whose absence has been conspicuous but can no longer be delayed. He'll be part of the next wave. I think I saved him for the last wave because a part of me hoped that DST would get to him first and do him justice, although I think I'm more up to the challenge now than I was when i first started this adventure, so we'll see how it goes. cylonchaney Posted July 29 Posted July 29 elhonez crushes it again! One of the reasons I prefer to use clear stickers is then I don't have to try to colour match with the plastic. A thing at which I suck and you excel! Nice work. Always looking forward to the next wave and a round of hang-mate. How many customs would you estimate you've created at this point? I think I'm getting close to 100 3d printed characters if you count my Cobra army builders as one character. I can't imagine how many you must be up to by now. Quote

Hmm good question... counting only "official releases," I have shared photos of 143 characters so far. More than I thought! Quote

Kotter Comics Posted August 1 Posted August 1 Amazing. And I didn't fully realize until now that none of the characters had individual names. That's a real deep cut. Quote
elhonez Posted August 2 Author Posted August 2 Thanks KC! I think this is as deep as I'll ever go, but you never know... Also, a quick PSA for those that may not have looked at P1 for a while: I updated it with an index of all of my previous customs. If you ever see one that catches your fancy and you'd like to replicate it, I'm always here for tech support / parts recommendations, etc. Quote
Navaan Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Really excited to see what Captain America ones you do! I am working on a Serpent Society effort on my end. Quote

Wow, can't wait to see your SS! RE: Cap, I have a small SHIELD set planned in the near-term, but I think I'm going to start jumping around after I finish MOKF/PMIF. So probably no "true" Cap stuff for a while. FWIW, i recently found a Ninjago helmet that could work for Cottonmouth -- I expect it would need some dremeling to get it to fit a MiniMate head, but worth a look at least. Quote
elhonez Posted August 11 Author Posted August 11 Alrighty. I'm at that point in my final (full) MOKF wave that I realize what I don't have and can't live without. There's a part whose perfection for my designs I can't un-see, but is unfortunately very difficult to source. Should any of you have this Mate or part, I am willing to pay more than fair market value for it. I already have one, but need two for... presently undisclosed purposes. It's... Billy from Predator, specifically his hair. Seems the only way to acquire him right now is to drop $80 on a full box of singles, or to try my luck with blind bags. I don't like those options. Should any of you have this Mate/piece and be willing to part with him/it, PM me and let's do business. Quote
buttheadsmate Posted August 11 Posted August 11 Having studied 'Billy's' hairpiece I can see it's unique & elusive on ebay . I obviously don't know your intentions for it (them) but looking through the MMDB (Hail Ivan) I can see that the "Alien' female character 'Vasquez' might be similar ? Different ,I'd agree' but far more available & therefore cheapish. Quote
elhonez Posted August 11 Author Posted August 11 Hm you are correct... there's also SF Ryu, and AofX Gambit. But I'm super obnoxious and get dead set on something when it's perfect. Ryu's hair is too short, Gambit's doesn't expose the bandanna in back, and Vasquez has never been confused for a man (have I?). If you're going for a 70s vibe, Billy's your man. My [ahem] masterpiece is complete, but, in the words of Yoda... "there is another." And why he didn't say "another, there is" is a mystery to all of us. Cryptically, he speaks, only apparently when suits him it does (this "other" of which I speak needs to match, for reasons). Help me Sonny Landham, you're my only hope. Quote
BuffaloDelorean Posted August 11 Posted August 11 (edited) Have you considered Casey Jones, or Thunderbird with his feathers cut off? Edited August 11 by BuffaloDelorean Quote
elhonez Posted August 11 Author Posted August 11 Thunderbird... hmm... "hmm deluxe" even... it would depend on how well I could shave off those feathers, but may be worth a shot. Thanks BD! Quote

I have nothing to offer but just wanted to say I love the 70's and 80's references generously peppered throughout your post! Platoon mates have some bandanas but shorter hair probably won't work for you. Quote
elhonez Posted August 18 Author Posted August 18 OK now I'm totally enamored with Thunderbird, but he's just as hard to find as Billy. I did have a spare, but I used his hairpiece for Apache Kid. The search continues! Quote

buttheadsmate Posted August 18 Posted August 18 There's 2 T'birds . I'm not sure what your criteria is but I've just been looking at both T'birds hairpieces & (for me) I can only see the feathers as being the 'major' difference ? The 2nd. version is rare/expensive on ebay , the 1st is plentiful . Quote
elhonez Posted August 19 Author Posted August 19 Thanks BHM. But now I like the clean part and general non-messiness of the harder-to-find one with the feather. I can't unsee its perfection! (I'm also super patient and have other things to work on, if it takes me some time to source this) There are six in this wave that are very similar. I almost dubbed this upcoming wave "Rainbow Connection," but thought better of it. Quote
