The Toy Fair 2010 thread

Recommended Posts

Okay! I popped by the DST booth today to try to get some answers for you guys. Took a few supplemental photos too (things like the connection system for the jet's wings), which should be added to our galleries sometime tonight or tomorrow.

The Answers:

* The random items at the end of the gallery were various toys from around the Diamond booth. I'd assume they're just various things carried by Diamond for shipping to comic stores.

* MAX prices can be expected to be $7.99 for a figure 2-pack or figure and mech, and around $12.99-$14.99 for a figure and vehicle.

* Father's Day figures to be sold as blister-carded 2-packs. The four dads on their own will be single-packed, booster-style.

And some additional info:

* The mech suits will be revised a bit with shorter arms and a roomier cockpit (currently, the pilot's arms have to be removed to fit).

* The APC can open up to hold six figures at once.

* The pirate ship has a captain's cabin with a chair. The one on display wasn't complete; its deck floor was missing.

* Has anyone mentioned the present-but-not-photographable Halo 'mates yet?

I have my doubts that we'll see all of those Ghost Busters released though. We've gone through most of the memorable ghosts from the movies, which means that the civilian GBs would have to be paired with either rereleases or lesser known ghosts, neither of which will really help them fly off shelves. If they had the slime tank variants for Ray and Winston, they might appeal more, but there isn't so much as a PKE meter amongst what is on display, so I don't see them attracting a lot of interest in continuing the line.

Well in the concept art behind them, I niticed that Library Venkman has a video camera. So perhaps it's going to join them and isn't quite made yet.

If they're doing the library versions, could it be possible that we get inhumanly symmetrical stacks of books?

Impossible. No body stacks Minimates like that.

...Oh, I see someone has. Oh well!

In that case, I offer the somewhat less exciting info that yes, those legs really are planned to come with Stilt-Man. They'll be in segments inside the packaging.

:0 Stop screwing with us, DST. First variant re-releases, now non-2" Minimates (both ways) just what are you getting at?!

Any word where the Father's Day Mates will be sold? Like Hallmark? Hmm? :)

i dont like the way the wolfman looks,or dracula.

That Wolfman reminds me of Teen Wolf...which they should also do.

He does, kinda. However for some reason I beleive the Transformation Larry is going to just be some extra parts with regular Larry Talbot.

Dracula just looks too... plain. He needs SOMETHING facewise to have some menace. I mean, even if they can't do Lugosi, I'm sure they can do something better than what they did!

However most of the Universal Monsters have propelled themselves to possibly my third favorite line, once occupied by Clint Eastwood. It fits right below Marvel and Ghostbusters. I am really very excited for these.

Now anyone want a Scooby Doo for the monsters to chase around?

Actually have you seen the source material recently? I mean, terifying for their time, but not really menacing by today's standards. I mean there was a major fight between Universal and the censors about showing Talbot tranforming into the Wolfman. In fact, this was excluded from the very first werewolf movie as too contriversal. (Scopes-Monkey Trial being around the same time and all) (And I saw that on a werewolf documentary the History Channel did a few years back and the factiod stuck with me.)

In fact, I think my boys and I watched a Creature from the Black Lagoon, Wolfman, and King Kong around last Halloween. Great movies, but my 4 year old was more scared of "Joker Jack" from 1989's Batman than the "monsters". (Which, BTW, I still have to check underbeds and behind doors for Joker Jack despite in being months since I foolishly thought he was old enough to watch that movie. Hey, he's watched all three Spideys, X-Men 1 & 2, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, and Superman 1, 2, & Returns without incident. Who knew?)

Heh. Just wait until he sees Begins and TDK. You'll be looking for Scarecrow, Joker, and Two Face for years in the attic above his bed AND all of those places.

yeah i have the original wolfman.and are you talking about the wolfman documentary hosted by john landis?because im watching it right now.but what i mean about the wolf man is that the minimate doesnt look right, because the real wolfman looks more feirce, but the minimate doesnt seem to capture that,in my opinion............but that doesnt mean i wont buy them!

Nah. It was a pretty generic look at Werewolves in general, from a >shock< historical perspective. I think it fell under their "Unexplained History" banner, or some such. Lot's of talking heads, fairlyu genric history channel narration. The two things that stuck best in my mind were the factiod about the very first Werewolf movie, and the general concinsus by the talking heads that what the Werewolf lacked was a great novel, like Dracula for vampires. Oh, and the guy who wrote the Howling admitting it was all about wolf sex.

Hey wait... I just noticed... In this pic... The modern Mandarin has FINGERS!

First Thanos, now Mandarin.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

Yeah - i prefer the way the original Thanos was treated. The little fingerless mitts with the jewels positioned roughly where the fingers would have been . . . although i was kind of boo'd out on that arguement. Everyone seemed to like the fingered gaunlet better - so i'm not surprised they did the same thing again with this one.

I might customize a paid of plain hands with little jewels to represent the rings for my display madarin.

Although . . . he IS often depicted with long fingernails/claws. I guess it's a similar story to the Sabretooth/Venom mates.

Wow....I'm completely floored by all the stuff we've been shown. Tons of new licenses.

The SWAT, Firefighters and Pirates are very welcome additions. Universal Monsters was probably overdue, and good to see them at last (hope we get them all). Father's Day....is....well, I don't know what to think. I like the creepy little kids though.

My only disappointment is that, other than the giveaway, there was no real news of Battle Beasts, which I was looking forward to. Oh well, maybe something is still cooking for SDCC.

I was giving some thought to the "lack" of Marvel shown at Toy Fair thus far. When you stop and think about it, what more were they going to show for Marvel really? The LCS waves they've shown will run us through summer. As of Wave 36, we're now running right up to SDCC in July. Most boxed sets tend to be store exclusive, so not much to sell to other stores there. And TF is for selling stuff to the store, so they can sell it to us. SDCC is to show off for the fans more than anything else. So, in that way, it makes sense to plug hese new lines now to the retailers, and save the big Marvel reveals for the convention circuit.

That said, there's days left to go on this thing. I'm hoping that at least the wave 6 TRU stuff loose. But I'm probably hoping too much there. Since Hasbro's already spilled the beans on the IM2 Mk V's appearance, maybe seeing the minimate version isn't too much to hope for.
