Lobsterman
Here goes... BEST MINIMATE 1. Nova While some of my colleagues here at the 'Verse are block figure purists, I tend to fall on the "partsy" side of the argument. Well-chosen, detailed accessories are what make Minimates special to me – especially if they're part of a costume. There were a lot of great choices this year, but I fell in love with Nova right out of the package. For me, he was a perfect example of pushing the accessories as far as they can go to "make" the character without overkill. Great sculpt on the chest armor without it being too cumbersome, the helmet is perfect, and the gauntlets – which could have easily been tampos instead – are icing on the cake. I admit, I've been on an Annihilation kick recently, and the timeliness of this character choice was able to harness my excitement for the figure even more. The perfect combination of part choice, execution and timing make this my number one. 2. Movie MK III Iron Man It was hard to make this a runner up. Maybe one-and-a-halfth place? Same reasons as above, and the metallic paint really made him sing. For some reason, though, the little tiny block figure purist that sometimes pipes up inside me took a teensy issue with the sculpted feet. They seemed like cheating rather than following the true "add-on" formula for costume/accessories. 3. The Man In Black I was really jazzed about the FAFDM box set overall when it came out. TMB had a boatload of guns and two cool coats. What can I say, I'm a sucker for parts. WORST MINIMATE 1. Green shirt Kirk I lay the death of the Trek line at your feet, Kirk. Gladiator and Dress Uniform were the injury. This was the insult. 2. Modern (Civil War) Iron Man I hate to come down on a figure that I and so many others wanted, but this was an example of good concept, terrible execution. Using the original Iron Man helmet with a (misaligned) tampo just looked sloppy, but the extra tall Apocalypse boots that threw him out of scale with every other Minimate is what killed it for me. I can't even bear to display him. 3. Sick Bay McCoy Another waste of a slot. This could have been Geordi, or Data, or Worf... BEST PACKAGING Invaders box set Really great job on the retro feel. Logically, it seems better to be able to see the product, but this one tapped into the comic book design aesthetic and worked around that license restriction nicely. BEST BOX SET/WAVE Tough one... there have been a lot of great sets. This is a toss-up between the FAFDM box set and Marvel wave 19. FAFDM So many cool parts, and it proved that Minimates could take an semi-obscure movie property and make it into a cool, unique toy. Plus, we got cowboy boots out of the deal! Marvel wave 19 For me, this wave was a return to form for the Marvel license, which had kind of felt stagnant for a while. It brought in some long-demanded fan-favorite characters and went all in on some fantastic new sculpts for character-specific parts. 05) WORST BOX SET/WAVE (one choice) DC wave 8 Because it represented the end of what could have been a fantastic, long-lived line. The character choices were passable for a mid-series wave, but could have been much, much better either to boost interest and sales if they were uncertain about the future, or to complete teams as a "thank you" if they knew it was going to be the last hurrah. Instead, it felt more like an "eff you, here's a couple random characters you may or may not care about." Yeah, I have a lot of bad memories associated with this wave. SEXIEST MINIMATE 1. Gamora I have a thing for scantily-clad space women in capes, apparently. 2. Starfire Or without capes is fine, too. 3. Raven I also have a thing for side-slit skirts. BIGGEST SLEEPER 1. Biff Tannen (Alt 1985) One word: muttonchops. A combination of accessory details and a really good facial likeness brought an unexpected level of personality to this 'Mate. 2. Mysterio I'm not a huge fan of the character, but I was really impressed by the detail and care put into the parts on this figure. The texture on his cape is amazing. 3. Lobo I didn't expect to care much, but again, the accessories made the figure. The sculpts were spot-on, and the metal chain was a great touch. IF ONLY... The Princess Bride Last week, this might very well have been Ghostbusters. So, hey, maybe I'm not dreaming. Make it happen, guys! FAVORITE CUSTOM I feel like a real ass for ducking out of this category. I need to spend more time looking at other peoples' work, because customizing is one of the best parts of Minimates. The Charitymates and Black and White entrants were all great. I think everyone's efforts deserve a round of applause. (yeah, that was a cop-out, I'll do better next time.) BEST ACCESSORY 1. Iron Man's flight base So many other characters want to fly. Thanks, shellhead! You just made Nova that much more perfect. 2. Hannibal Lecter's furniture dolly Because I can make a UPS 'mate now. 3. Archangel's wings Not useful for anything else, but a great comic-accurate sculpt, and the size and heft to make the character work. Unlike other wimpy wings I could mention coughHawkmancough. WORST ACCESSORY 1. Modern (Civil War) Iron Man's boots As I said before, the reuse of Apocalypse's too-tall boots really killed this figure for me. 2. Apocalypse's arm cords Super annoying that they don't bend. 3. Marvel Wave 6 Jean Grey's hair C'mon guys. It's time to retire that piece. When I opened the Cloak and Dagger set, I swear I heard a faint whisper of "kiiilll meeeee." BEST VARIANT Vision 2.0 None of the variants this year were drop-dead have to have them. This was a good pick that gave us a different character rather than just a different costume. WORST VARIANT Remote Control Spock Seriously? Another Spock? BEST IRON MAN OF '08 Movie MK III Gorgeous metallic paint, lots of great armor pieces and the crowning achievement – the removable facemask – made this possibly the definitive Iron Man Minimate, comic or movie. Movie MK I I liked that DST invested the money in making a bunch of extra parts for this 'Mate when he wasn't necessarily the star of the set. War Machine MK I A nice new sculpt for a much-needed character. Edited February 10, 2009 by Lobsterman

Bob Harris
Here are my nominees: BEST MINIMATE 1. Invaders Captain America 2. Movie Iron Man Mark III (Marvel 21) 3. Back In Black Spiderman (Marvel 24) OK, first of all, I'm mostly into Marvel. Invaders Cap is close to perfection. The new shield holding strips are what I always wanted to see. Only drawback on Cap is, that they used one of these new masks on him which comes with parts of his face. I don't like that and think that should be changed. Somehow. That Iron Man is just outstanding. My #3 choice, Back in Black Spidey, might be a surprise for some of you, comparing him to all the other new mates, but I really like the way he's designed, do love the new mask thingy – which works perfect on him - and I always wanted to have a black dressed Spidey. Besides the out of stock wave 2 one that is. WORST MINIMATE 1. Prof. Hulk (Marvel 20) 2. Detention Marty (BTTF 3) 3. First Appearance Hulk (First Avengers Box Set) It's all hulky and bulky mates. There are several debates why Hulk doesn't come out as perfect as he might. The duck feet are just one aspect. The arms might be the biggest problem. Marty on the other hand is just a boring and completely unnecessary mate in that box set. BEST PACKAGING The window boxes (Marvel waves 23 & 24) I really like these new boxes a lot, so I vote for them! The designs of the box-of-four packagings (i.e. Invaders) are nice too, but I don't really like the way these boxes come without any window. BEST BOX SET/WAVE The Dollars Trilogy These come with fantastic details and accessories. Best MovieMates so far! (Maybe they'll be topped next year by the Ghostbusters mates!) WORST BOX SET/WAVE Civil War Box Set OK, that is a tough decision, I know. There may be worse boxes or waves (i.e. Star Trek as far as I read here), but I took this one, because I really think the Civil War series had way more exciting characters to minimaterize. Nitro might be an important character for the story, but he's pretty boring as a minimate in my eyes. And Iron Spider Man without the extra arms is just a waste. Civil War Iron Man should be in the box, I agree, but I don't really like the way he turned out. Way too tall compared to others and somehow clumsy. There were better Iron Men released this year. Only battle damaged Cap with the bloody shield and the handcuffs is really well done. So this decision is more because the box set failed to live up to my great expectations. SEXIEST MINIMATE 1. SDCC08 Red Dress Six 2. Marisol (A Fistful of Dollars Box Set) 3. Marlena Moreau and Mirror Uhura in a cat fight, uhm, tie on third place (Star Trek Mirror Mirror Box Set) That Six is just wow. Marisol is a sleeping beauty in her poor outfit and Moreau und Uhura with their miniskirts are just ... I mean, for 2“ plastic toys! BIGGEST SLEEPER 1. Chef Duff 2. Showdown Monco (For A Few Dollars More Box Set ) 3. Lobo (DC 7) Chef Duff is the perfect sleeper in my eyes. I don't really know who he really is, but the whole bunch of accessories he comes with makes this package perfect for customs. Monco is superb and the best mate in the whole Dollar Trilogy in my eyes. And Lobo is a surprice because of his awesome and unique accessories. IF ONLY... Wolverine! No, wait... There are a few comic book characters I'd love to see (i.e. The Inhumans), but since there is the possibility we're going to see more MovieMates in the near future, I'd love to see Kurosawa's Seven Samurai minimaterized! FAVORITE CUSTOM 1. Stan Lee by Skullbuster 2. Stratos by The Crippler 3. The Watcher by Luke314pi There are many awesome customs done in 2008 so this was a hard one, but I definitely did want to vote in this category. I chose three different artists even when people like Luke have a whole truckload full of fantastic customs that are worth mentioning. It was really close, but these are my favorites and I do love their details, creative potential and uniqueness. Kudos to all the busy customizing bees out there anyway. BEST ACCESSORY 1. Cap's backpack shield holding things. 2. The new masks some Marvel heroes come with. 3. The Human Torch and Iron Man flight stands. WORST ACCESSORY 1. Duck feet. 2. The framed pictures that came with some BSG characters. 3. Some extra hands several mates came with. I did already mention the feet-problem in the worst mates category. The framed pics are a complete waste in my eyes. They might be a little funnier, if the printed pics in it would a) fit into the frames and would show minimaterized characters and not real poeple. The extra hands – i.e. the key-holding hand and card-holding hands from BSG, the moth-holding hand from SOTL – are a nice idea but most of them are just unnecessary. BUT there are others that I do really, really love, like the cigar-holding hand from BSG's Starbuck. BEST VARIANT War Machine Mark II (Marvel 23) Very nice details here and I love – even if I don't own either one of them – the fact, that it's not just a change of heads – Starks / Rhodes – but different sculpted armors as well. Well done, DST! WORST VARIANT General Ross (Marvel 22) In my eyes, there aren't really bad variants, but some, that just aren't worth of being one. The General is a good example for that, I guess. BEST IRON MAN OF '08 1. Movie Mark III (Marvel 21) 2. Movie Mark I (Marvel 21) 3. Mark III Armor (Through the Ages box set) The only reason why the highly detailed (look at these writings on the armor!!!) movie Mark I is just on second place is, that it's just a nice artifact in the history of Stark's armors and not an actual used one. Long live subjectivity! The Movie Mark III has this unbelievable paint and the removable mask which make this version outstanding. So far. EDIT: And thanks for doing this, Cappy! Nessex
OH NO! I know it's too late - but for what it's worth, here are my choices! Alright - here goes. Just a heads up: I'm only rating and ranking series I have bought or handled in person, or are from a licence I collect. Since i have no contact with the Trek or BSG 'Mates - they have not gotten any mention. 01) BEST MINIMATE (top 3 choices) Death Archangel Susan (Desperately Seeking Susan) Apocalypse 02) WORST MINIMATE (top 3 choices) Civil War Iron Man - man that one stunk! Gorilla Grodd Professor Hulk - loved the grin, hated the lack of neck and costume and duck feet. 03) BEST PACKAGING (one choice) Desperately Seeking Susan - Perfectly capturing the 80's. (runner up: Civil War - Most dynamic, eye catching box design in my opinion) 04) BEST BOX SET/WAVE (one choice) Marvel MiniMates Wave 19 - almost all of them were 5 star 'Mates. Especially Death, Apocalypse, Mysterio & Ultron 05) WORST BOX SET/WAVE (one choice) Marvel MiniMates Wave 22 - the sculpting was decent, but the selection of character was pretty boring for anyone who wasn't a hulk fan. 06) SEXIEST MINIMATE (top 3 choices) - male or female Nightwing - The boy is STEAMING Starfire - On Fire Polaris - The girl has a magnetic personality 07) BIGGEST SLEEPER (top 3 choices) - unexpectedly good, an unsung hero Desperately Seeking Susan - Everyone boo'd the choice, but they were some of the most accurate, well sculpted 'Mates of the year. Red Son Superman & Wonder Woman - The signalled the end of the line, but were variant WORTH making/owning Task Master & US Agent - Accessories Galore & Creative re-use of already molded parts 08) IF ONLY... (one choice) - most wanted 'Mate that still hasn't been produced/announced Mr. *freaking* SINISTER!!!!!!!! 09) FAVORITE CUSTOM (top 3 choices) - posted on this board in 2008 HELLFIRE CLUB! - I'd buy this box-set in a heartbeat! http://www.minimatemultiverse.com/index.ph...amp;#entry90259 Lilandra http://www.minimatemultiverse.com/index.ph...amp;#entry82992 Rachel 'The Hound' Summers http://www.minimatemultiverse.com/index.ph...amp;#entry87268 Will you Marry me, Luke314pi? (Deathbird was a VERY close 4th place. If she had her wings, i'd have bumped her into 2nd or 3rd place) 10) BEST ACCESSORY (top 3 choices) Archangel's Death Mask Susan's Hat-Box Hank Pym’s Helmet (if i could talk to the animals . . . ) 11) WORST ACCESSORY (top 3 choices) duck feet Duck Feet DUCK FEET! - we don't want ‘em till we get a Howard the Duck 'Mate!!! 12) BEST VARIANT (one choice) Archangel - no contest! 13) WORST VARIANT (one choice) MK War Machine - Jim Rhodes - Because he should have been the PRIMARY release, not a 'variant' *Grrrr* and finally, because he deserves it: 14) BEST IRON MAN OF '08 (top 3 choices) Stealth Iron Man Mk II War Machine (James Rhodes) Modular Iron Man

Cappy
The votes have been tabulated, the celebrities called in for their awards. So then, let the presentation begin! We'll start with the "If Only..." and "Favorite Custom" votes. The voting in these categories scattered across the spectrum, So much so that any tabulation was worthless. The nominees were all excellent, however, and deserve recognition. So I have listed them out so you can, in condensed form, what your collecting peer group values. If Only... Black Bolt Black Panther Captain Britain Dark Knight Joker Dr Evelyn Necker Green Lantern Corps Lara Croft large Sentinel Moon Knight Mr Freeze Mr Sinister Nexus Onslaught Plastic Man Prankster Rorschach Seven Samurai Star Wars more Street Fighter The Princess Bride The Return of LOTR Favorite Custom (Click the links to see the entries) Buttheadsmate - G.I. Raffe Boyd - Simyan The Crippler - Modern Wasp - Stratos Graham - Hulkbuster Iron Man - Ultimate WWII Captain America Nervous - Charlie Chaplin - Firefly Mattallica - Dark Knight Joker - Nurse Joker - Savage Land Rogue Shamrock - Headcrab Zombie - Gordon Freeman - Half-Life 2 Orange Box Skull Buster - Jack the Ripper - Stan Lee - The Darkness luke314pi - Big Daddy - The Watcher - Crossbones - Lilandra - Union Jack - Groo - Hellfire Club - "Hound" Rachel Summers 1st place: Bob Harris's Dr Manhattan Best Packaging Marvel Series 23 & 24 (for the window boxing) Worst Wave or Box Set (Click thumbnails for larger pics) Star Trek Series 3 Best Wave or Box Set Invaders Worst Accessory 3rd place: Taskmaster's gear 2nd place: Gorilla Grodd's skull 1st place: duck feet! Best Accessory 3rd place: Chef Duff's chainsaw 2nd place: WWII Captain America's shield sling 1st place: rocket flight stand Minimates gained a new feature this year: sets with loads of accessories. Because of this, the voting for such sets got spread out and diluted. So, based on the "Best Accessory" points, I generated a subcategory: Best Accessorized Minimate 3rd place: WWII Captain America 2nd place: Hannibal the Canibal 1st place: Chef Duff (no surprise there) Biggest Sleeper 3rd place (tied): Lobo & Susan 2nd place: Skrull Santa 1st place: The Human Torch (Jim Hammond) Best Iron Man 3rd place: Mk II War Machine (James Rhodes) 2nd place: Stealth Iron Man (movie) 1st place: Mk III Iron Man (movie) (Sorry about the picture, I lost my Stealth Iron Man mask. Dammit!) Worst Variant Remote Control Spock Best Variant Mk II War Machine (James Rhodes) THE TOP 3 CATEGORIES: Sexist Minimates 3rd place: Mirror Uhura & Nightwing 2nd place: SDCC Red Dress Six & Playboy Tony Stark 1st place: Marlena Moreau & Buffalo Bill Worst Minimate 3rd place: First Appearance Hulk 2nd place: Gladiator Kirk 1st place: Professor Hulk And now, finally, The Best Minimate of 2008 3rd place (tied): Archangel & Mk II War Machine (James Rhodes) 2nd place: WWII Captain America 1st place: Mk III Iron Man (movie) As you can see, 2008 was the Year of Iron Man. Despite his dominating the awards, the voting was varied, but Tony and his cohorts usually came out on top. It's always interesting to see the same Minimate on one member's worst of list show up on anothers best of. Star Trek got a lot of press time, unfortunately most of it was negative. The marked exception being the sexy ladies from the Mirror universe. Speaking of that Trek lot: Still ticked at being labeled the worst, the bad apples of 2008 have some words behind the studio with last year's Best Variant winner. Although they're not above a little good-natured ribbing within their own group. Edited March 7, 2009 by Cappy
