From Playthings.com:

"New MiniMates, designed by Art Asylum, make up part of Diamond Select Toys’ offerings this year. New MiniMates licenses for 2007 include: 80s Madonna film Desperately Seeking Susan, Rocky, 24, Star Trek, Back to the Future, Ghost Rider, A Few Dollars More as well as new DC and Marvel comic characters and Battlestar Gallactica [sic] additions."

No one saw these coming.

"A Few Dollars More" I can KIND of understand since it's probably a very cheap Clint Eastwood license. (Can Dirty Harry be too far away?)

But Madonna?

Holy shit, dude.

I am all over the Clint Eastwood minis. The Madonna stuff is odd, but I guess people will buy them. If they are buying Rocky, why not Desperately Seeking Susan?

I can think of a good slogan for the Desperately Seeking Susan line.

Desperately Seeking Susan: the Kellogg's of 2007!

I'd love to see some western Minimates though.

As pointed out elsewhere on the board:

Back To The Future "Clint Eastwood" and actual Clint Eastwood = Win

Things you should know:
AA are now owned by DST
The DC mates are made by DC Direct, so there are no "licensing issues"
The Marvel license cant go above 2"
The Ghost Rider and Target Spider-Man waves are "cancelled"

Okay, really? Madonna? Really?

Can I just make a list of movies, then? Ghostbusters. Blade Runner. Dune. Fricking Krull. How about some Monty Python mates?

How about we just call this the decade of Minimates? wink.gif

Same here, on both accounts. With sooo many new things coming out, it is good to see some different stuff. Now my wife, who couldn't care less about minimates, actually said that they look cool(she is a big Madonna fan) and something she could put on her desk at work. That is coming from a person who doesn't collect toys, who is now interested. This, and some of the other lines, may not be everyone's cup of tea, but is it necessary to put these lines down. I am aware people are entitled to their own opinions, and hey I am not interested in some of the stuff we have seen, but that is about as much as I will say about it. I just do not feel it adds to the discussions in a positive way.

Sorry for the rant, it is really not something I do very often, but we were just exposed to more minimates than I think anyone expected, which is very exciting, and it still doesn't seem to be enough for some folks. There is so much coming out, that it really shouldn't matter if we like everything.Lets just ride the information wave for awhile, until stuff starts to suffer from poor quality and release dates being pushed back.

Hey, I'm all for more minimates, regardless of what they are. I'm quite happy with the massive amount of information that was tossed our way. All I'm saying is that Desperately Seeking Susan seems more like Kelloggs in the respect that I have no idea what niche audience its targeted towards. I'm not very interested in them, but if they do a good job with the license, then I'll be getting them anyway. The fact that there are people out there interested in that particular line just makes the future that much brighter because the more people on board the minimate movement, the longer it'll last.

No problem DB316. Not all licenses appeal to all people. (Speed Racer is not EVER going to be in my collection. Maybe 15 - 20 years ago, but not now.) Something about the Madonna 'mate screams 'must have' to me. Don't know what it is - I've never been a big Madonna fan - I was into stuff like the Violent Femmes and Dead Kennedys back when 'Like a Virgin' was first out - maybe it's just the fact that I never expected to see a Madonna 'mate.

On the other hand, the Rain Man 'mates will sit on the shelf and rot before I'll pick them up. I wouldn't have a Tom Cruise 'mate on my shelf if Xenu himself paid me to do so.

I guess it comes down to different strokes, y'know?

That's the next license they'll probably debut, right before Silver Spoons and Facts of Life...

I'm all for A Few Dollars More Minimates - they'll make great background guys for BTTF 3 mates. It's just a shame that Tuco wasn't in AFDM, as I'm a huge, huge fan of Good, Bad & Ugly.

As for DS Susan, yeah, sure, why not? I have only the vaguest memory of that film, but I think it's a step in the right direction. Hopefully it will introduce the Minimate 'verse to a wider array of people who wouldn't necessarily buy Minimates otherwise. I'll definitely get a set. And I really like the trend of making toys for overlooked 80's films!

In that vein, my next dream license would be GOONIES! Tons of characters, recognizable villains, and since they've got the DC license, one would assume they could make a Sloth with Superman t-shirt. I think they could use Adrian's hat piece for Ma Fratelli, as she wore a similar hat. Following those, I'm all for Ghostbusters, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Breakfast Club, Weird Science, and so on!

I think the key here is that they are all MGM movies. I think DST is going to try to "Minimate" big stars from any of the MGM movies.

I'm totally down with the Madonna Minimate. And I can't refuse Clint Eastwood. These are pop-culture icons. I'm just shocked to see so many in one year!

You certainly can't say they aren't trying to bring in licenses now, that's for sure. I do believe a couple years back we were all a little ticked that the only thing minimate was Marvel. And as much as I've doubted some of the licenses that have come in since then, I suppose it makes sense from their business perspective, else they wouldn't have put down the capital for the licensing cost to begin with.

It can't be just MGM, as Back to the Future is Universal, but still if they can get more stuff from the MGM catalog, then let's see: Casino Royale & other Bonds, Sin City, UHF, Bill & Ted, Terminator, Robocop, This is Spinal Tap, Clash of the Titans, Mad Max, Soylent Green (my namesake), North By Northwest (man that would be so sweet), Ben Hur, Tarzan, Jailhouse Rock, Forbidden Planet, and The Wizard of Oz! And that's just from a brief scan of the imdb page!
