So did anybody see this inexplicable bit of news on TNI? The description doesn't really seem to mention any re-release, so maybe it's just a mistake? Not sure what this means...

Well, it went up for preorder at BBTS today...

I'm guessing that BTTF.com had a bunch of sets left over and DST have agreed to offer it up through Previews? It's happened with some of the lower-selling AFX exclusives in the past.

While those avatar-switching jokers are messing around over in the other thread, I thought I'd pose the more serious question of whether there's a real future for the return of Back To The Future Minimates.

As I've mentioned before in another thread, DST previously hinted at BTTF's comeback once, and that if they ever plan on revisiting the 'mates then Clara Clayton and Einstein might be next in line.

Outside of the usual Marty/Doc variants, there really aren't that many new characters left in the BTTF 'verse to translate to 'mate form. Given the choice though, these are the characters I'd like to see:

1. Clara, obviously - from what I recall she had at least two looks in the third movie: her schoolteacher look and her in the dress from when she goes to the barnyard dance with Doc Brown. In any case, I think she'd make the perfect Southern Belle minimate.

2. a new George McFly - so far we only have the 1955 Prom version, I would've liked seeing a casual version from either the fifties or the eighties plus the distant future version... in fact, I think several George McFly Minimates may actually be viable

3. alternate 1985 Lorraine - because who doesn't love a figure of a gussied-up trophy wife with fake boobs? :P

4. Jules and Verne - to the uninitiated, they're Doc and Clara's kids from the end of part 3, though they had a bigger role in the animated series. DST can probably do them similar to how they did James Howlett or something.

5. a proper Marty McFly Jr. - or Marty disguised as his son, or whatever. And yes, I want the baggy jacket sleeves, flashy baseball cap and everything.

6. Mr. Strickland - the strict teacher from 1955 IIRC. He also has an Old West ancestor *hint hint*

7. Needles - Marty's future business rival, though he does appear as a punk teen at the end of the third movie. Two words: Flea Minimate!!!

I know a lot of purists weren't happy with the prototype Delorean in the Minimate vehicles line, but speaking from a casual-buyer perspective they might actually have some real play value for kids... that is, if the price point and lack of wheel rotation doesn't turn them off first.

EDIT: Wow, how could I forget?

I agree that the well has almost been drained on this line. Doc, Mary, and Biff have always been the faces of the franchise, with Lorraine playing a secondary, but still important role in the series. We've gotten these characters in several forms, so a lot of your casual buyers who were here from the beginning would already have their satisfaction. Retreading too much could see a decline in sales, since a straight rerelease won't get much attention from the people who bought it the first time, unless they collect packaging variants. Costume variants wouldn't get as much attention from the casual buyers since they've already got a half dozen Martys, why would they want one more with a different tint of red on his shirt.

But should we continue the line, we're also lacking in Jennifer, though she was barely in the movies compared to some of the other characters.

I think you have some great choices NorthRaider, and I would love to have every single one of those on my shelf.

I am hoping the vehicles line does well enough that we could get a version of the train from BTTF 3. Even as a deformed smaller vehicle, I think it could look really cool.

I just wish they'd re-release the very first DST 4pack, I missed it the first time around (and didnt know anything about minimates either) and now if you find them on ebay they usually end up going for $40-50... the 1985 Marty w/ vest & skateboard is the only version of him that I like, I saw a loose one go for $10+s&h on ebay recently... I dont care for the others (the one with the plaid shirt isnt too bad)

I don't really see this happening, but I'd love to get a final box set with:

-Radiation suit Doc

-Einstein

-1955 George

-first box set Marty rerelease, for those who missed it, and to drive the sales

It's kind of nuts that we don't have a regular '55 George, since he's really a main character in the first movie. As for NR's suggestion of future George -- wasn't he edited out of that movie after the theatrical run? I'm kind of vague on it, but I remember the actor suing them for using his likeness after he backed out of the sequels.

My memory of the movies is a bit fuzzy, but IIRC after Crispin Glover (George McFly in the first movie) opted out of the sequels they just got another actor to sub for him. The scenes set in 1955 in the second movie were probably reshot using body doubles or clever camera angles or something. And "Future George" really means George circa the 2000s (around the time Marty and Jennifer get married and start a family) meaning by then he was already an old man assisted by a fancy hover-walker, so DST can always circumvent the likeness issues by making him look really wrinkled :P

You must not be checking eBay recently...if you did you'd be unpleasantly surprised.

I think the fact that these are going for insane amounts on the secondary (the few times they show up) shows the interest in these. If they did re-release it, I'd rather see them re-done so that there's at least some differences in them for those of us who already have them.

you're right... it was $40-50 when I stopped watching the auction... the actual final bid was $122.50 - who in their right mind would pay that?

edit: I said screw it and just did a buy-it-now for $10.99+$5.00 s&h for the series three 4pack, though I really have no interest in the BTTF3 cowboy minimates... do you guys know if there any minimates that come with a similar removable vest that I could paint to look like the series 1 marty? something thats not as rare that I could get for cheap on ebay...

Yeah I got what you meant by Future George, it's just I noticed the scenes with him in the future were edited out the last time I saw it on TV, so I assumed that was a result of Glover's lawsuit... but I can't find anything about it online, so I guess it was just edited down for time. It looks like the lawsuit only resulted in a cash settlement for him and some rewritten SAG rules.

It's a shame -- as much as I enjoy the sequels, I think Glover's performance is one of the things that makes the original film stand out so much more to me.

the Wolverine Origins Logan that came with Sabretooth comes with the Marty vest repainted, and should not be in any way hard to find

sweet! thanks guys - ebay has a couple loose ones for $5-7 (+sh), but then I found a buy-it-now for the logan/sabretooth 2 pack for $5.24+2.95 s&h so I bought it. my local walmart doesnt carry minimates and the closest toys r us is about 1.5 hours away :(

but now that I look at closeups of each individual marty, I would still need to paint the denim jacket on his arms, and the plaid shirt over his red shirt, since the plaid shirt of the series 3 marty comes off like the vest does... hmmm....

clumped together most of my BTTF collection for a picture, its not very good but you can see one of my custom Martys sitting in a Welly delorean

bttf2.th.jpg

hair - T2 Kyle Reese

head - Silence of the Lambs Clarice (backwards, drew face on w/ marker)

vest - Marvel wave 26 Logan

arms - SOTL Dr Hannibal Lecter

torso - T2 Kyle Reese (with shirt details drawn on with marker)

legs - SOTL Buffalo Bill

shoes - T2 Kyle Reese

and I made a Doc figure for my nephew to go with his BTTF series 3 "detention Marty" using the head of Buffalo Bill and the trenchcoat from Kyle Reese LOL
