FINISHED INVISIBLE MAN:

Hi,

Today I was in Toys R Us buying my niece a present, when I ended up buying the Wolf-Man and Creature figures out of impulse. I'm happy I did it because I love Universal Monsters, but was trying to avoid extra expenditures. Well, I failed, and decided to move forward with my collection.

I want to add the Invisible Man to my collection, since I have a feeling DST might not reach that far in the series. I was going to decide between these two looks:

<img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3588/3464050382_6a7b10ba94.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

<img src="http://www.mwctoys.com/images/review_invisibleman_4.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

(Thanks to the websites that provided images)

I was hoping experienced minimate collectors could help me with some parts brainstorming. Aside from having an Invisible No-Hair Sue Storm fill in, or just pretending an Invisible Man was there (but I can't see him), I was hoping to find something along the lines of a <i><b>closed trenchcoat part, hat, sunglasses, etc</b></i>. For instance, the newly released Trenchcoat Thing would be perfect, but I fear his coat is too bulky and would look odd on a regular mate.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for the consideration!

its sad how tricky it is to think of parts for him :( but off the top of my head

coat: either blackhawks number or the new thing tranchcoat

as for the robe look id say just paint the chest and use one of the dress peices for the bottom

the only thing else is the hat so id say either wait for dum dum dugan or use the thing hat

I think that Ivan should get some award because that guy doesn't rest on his laurels ,he is continually updating & innovating on the Minimate Database & it is becoming more & more like a bible . I mention this because it is invariably my first port of call when I'm looking for anything Minimate related so try this.........

Go to the MMDB & tap in the word 'coat' in the search function area & voila ............coats.

If you knew that then I apologise but I don't think that everybody does?

Looking at what's available I'd say TMWNN from The Good The Bad & The Ugly was OK .....I'm also thinking new Red Skull's coat?

Whilst I'm at it ....try (for example) the word 'green' & you get a myriad of Minimates & Minimate parts that are...can you guess .......?

I've seen an impressive trench coat made from a Guy Gardner coat and a sculpted piece for the lower half. You could probably also use a slightly modified dress piece, unfortunately I don't recall who made it...

If I were making this, I would do the first look. Use the Gardner coat/skirt combo, either just paint a blank mask or sculpt one for the wrappings over a clear head, and have interchangeable clear pieces like hands for alternate looks.

And BHM is right, Ivan deserves a medal.

Thank you everyone, you all had excellent ideas!

Buttheadsmate, great tip on the searchable tags on Minimate Database. I could search through those images for hours.

I am definitely doing the transparent head under a slip on mask, with a transparent hand.

I'm leaning more towards the trenchcoat look over the robe. That is how I remember him from the book. In the movie he is in the robe more, but he definitely looks more intimidating with the hat and coat, and he would fit in better with the rest of the Universal Monsters. The trenchcoat piece seems to be the most difficult. Trenchcoat Thing would be perfect, but he is very bulky. I quickly used Photoshop to create a mock-up of how the Invisible Man would look. Unfortunately, he looks like he gained 60lbs:

(A big thank you to Minimate Database for the images!)

He doesn't look particularly bad, just bulky.

I will research Pegasus Six, Red Skull, Blackhawk's coat, as well as Guy Gardner's top. Once I find a workable recipe, I'll post it on here in case others want to use it. However, it seems like most customizers on here are already pretty good at developing their own figures.

What about Pegasus Six's coat (both pieces) for the bathrobe, with clear 'mate (frodo?) underneath? You could make the bandage/2-part head covering piece with medical tape (spraying it to harden it) & attach glasses to it.

Just like the "official" pic:

Maybe pet shop adrian (from rocky) for the coat?

I used this coat originally for my Rorschach custom.... it's a placeholder at best. The biggest problem is that it has these ridiculous sleeves that just look terrible. Might not be as bad for the Invisible Man as with Rorschach though. Eventually I did buy a Pegasus Six and painted the coat brown, which works better but not perfectly. The big drawback is that the coat's a little too short, ending just below the waist rather then below the knees, and it has little tiny breast bumps. So it's hard not to think he's wearing a woman's coat, but I still think it's the best option. Belted trenchcoats are one of the bafflingly lacking Minimate accessories.

Anyway, Joe (or anyone) if you want to give the Adrian coat a try, PM me and we can work out a trade, as mine's just taking up space in my parts box now.

I wanted to thank everybody for their assistance in this Invisible Man project. I finished the custom tonight, and thought I would show it off. The minimate part I struggled with most was the closed trenchcoat, as hellpop pointed out, there are very few closed trenchcoat options. They are either too bulky, too short, or have ridiculous sleeves. I ended up customizing it by combining a suit top with a dress skirt bottom, and using a little sculpy for detail. He has a removable hat, and a removable sleeve-head bandage. To create the bandage effect, I cut thin strips of painters tape and wrapped it around his head (nice idea homestar17). I opted to not include his rubber nose, since minimates don't usually have noses anyhow.

I like yours better than the proto shown by DST. Your version looks like a trench coat, and theirs looks like a bath robe.

BS

Edit: After looking back through this thread, I realized DST's is supposed to look like a robe  I also decided I don't like the robe look at all, and the trench coat is much better... and Joe, your custom is still bad ass

Wow! Thanks for all the compliments! In case anyone wants to make their own Invisible Man, here is the recipe:

Head: Wave 11 Clear Iceman, generic headsleeve wrapped in thin cuts of painters tape, painted various tones of white

Glasses: Wave 1 Bruce banner, painted silver and black

Hat: DC's The Question (her hat was wider and looks better with the headsleeve, I sanded down the inside for a better fit

Torso: Larry Talbot Suit, painted brown (modified with sculpy to create ascot/bandanna, painted blue/yellow)

Skirt: Silverfox (cut with knife and modified with sculpy to include straps, painted brown)

Arms: Generic arms, painted brown

Hands: 1 Clear hand; 1 generic hand, painted light brown

Legs: Generic Black

very nice work indeed... that turned out fantastic, any chance of a photo with Wolfman and the Creature?

I do very much hope we get all the monsters we've seen in prototypes

Thanks! Here is the picture you requested, I can't wait until all the monsters are together:

Brilliant. Wonderful work on the trenchcoat, and all the details.

Got any more monster customs in the works? I'd love to see them.

Outside of the Invisible Man, Wolfman, Creature, Mummy Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, and the Bride; the only other monster I want to add to my collection is The Phantom of the Opera. I am basing his deformed face off of Lou Chaney's 1925 version:

Currently, I only have a Photoshop mock-up, since the body I want to use is from Van Helsing in the Dracula set:

Phantom.jpg

His head is a modified Ghostbuster's Janosz. Unfortunately, the long head of the Phantom is difficult to create on a minimate, so that is what I'm working on now.

Thanks again for the Invisible Man compliments!

Feel free to use any recipes/plans, though I'm sure you could create an excellent one yourself. I was also thinking of using a Buffalo Bill or Hannibal Lecter head, and then modifying it.

My goal is to complete all these monsters, which I consider the major ones:
