Simply put Dr who is nothing like getting into Star Trek... in the UK it's prime time family entertainment ( and has been intermittently since the 50's). Most episodes tend to be selfcontained but will often reference other episode or event at a level that isn't important if you don't know but adds bang for your buck if you do, you could watch several episodes and be happy or watch it all and be drawn into it, It really does work either way. I'd say see if you can find a few episodes and give it a go, don't feel the need to do it all at once or just to be in the know ( or even go find episodes pre 9th and 10th doctor).
