Epic Marvel Podcast thread

Hey everybody, my friend Kurtis started a podcast where I (James) will be one of the rotating co-hosts. We're the Epic Marvel Podcast and our mission is to spend one episode discussing one volume in-depth of the best thing Marvel has going today, the Marvel Epic Collection trade paperbacks. If any of you are familiar with the old line of Essential Marvel TPBs, the Epics are basically the same thing although they are in color. The major difference is that the Epic volumes are released out of order. For example, Essential Fantastic Four started with Volume 1, the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby stuff from issue 1 in 1962, then kept going forward chronologically. The Epics are released out of order. The first Epic Volume of Fantastic Four released was Volume 17, the Stern/Englehart/Buscema stuff from the late 80's. Then they released a 90's Volume, then went back to Volume 1 Lee/Kirby, and so on. They're doing it this way to get stuff out there that hasn't already been reprinted a million times. All of the Epic lines have been meticulously mapped out in advance and part of the fun is guessing what will come out next and what will be in the volumes. The goal is to eventually have full runs of Marvel's longest-running titles collected.

For the first episode, Kurtis and I tackled the very first Epic volume released, Iron Man Volume 10: The Enemy Within (Iron Man 158-177 and Annual 5). This is the Denny O'Neil/Luke McDonnell run where Tony has a relapse with alcoholism and eventually Jim Rhodes takes over as Iron Man. Each episode should clock in around an hour, however since this is our first, we spent some extra time introducing the project and ourselves. You don't need to know anything to listen so feel free to jump right in! If you have any questions or comments, you can post here or on the site. I think any fan of classic Marvel will enjoy this. Let me know what you think!

Hey guys!

Kurtis and I are back to discuss Silver Surfer Epic Collection Volume 3 - Freedom. This volume covers the incredible Steve Englehart run from 1987, plus more. Cosmic comics at their absolute best. Plus, Englehart and Joe Rubinstein stop by to drop some knowledge! The Epic Marvel Podcast goes in-depth on topics that no other podcasts tackle. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Society of Serpents covers 1985-1986. Beginning of the Mark Gruenwald run. Highest possible recommendation.

A Touch of Typhoid covers 1988-1989. The first half of Ann Nocenti and JRJR's run. Nocenti has a very unique voice that isn't to everyone's tastes, but I really enjoyed her work here.

After a brief hiatus in the Dark Dimension, we're back!!

Kurtis and Craig cover Doctor Strange Epic Collection Volume 3 - A Separate Reality. This volume includes Doctor Strange 180-183, Sub-Mariner 22, Incredible Hulk 126, Marvel Feature 1, Marvel Premiere 3-14 and Doctor Strange 1-5. The good Doctor at his trippy, groovy, psychedelic seventies best from 1969-1974. What is Sise-Neg an anagram for? What happens when the Ancient One ascends from the mortal plane? Wait, the Defenders without Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage & Iron Fist? And why is there a talking caterpillar? Comic book legends Roy Thomas and Steve Englehart also give some behind the scenes details of working in the seventies Marvel Bullpen.
