Yeah, Zach mentioned it a while back. Apparently they were able to catch it before everything was finalized.

Judging from what's been posted at other sites there were some major Hasbro and Marvel panels today. I assume the big sites focused on covering them over DST.

Those drill bit and saw-blade hands on the Foot soldiers would make great alternate hands for a new, bulked up Apocalypse if DST were so inclined to make one. Just sayin',

I think Storm has a complete rundown he may be posting. Really the only thing shown at the panel we hadn't already seen was the lineup and painted proto images of the Infinity set. Thanos, Thane, Cap, and Hulk in the set, Ronan and IM maybe in a two pack at a later date.

Weren't 60/19 shown?

I attended the panel. Nothing too revealing. No pics allowed. Marvel box set lineup announced. Control art from Aliens. Packaging art for blind bags. Chuck joked about molesting Minimates and Zach about Cats (the musical). Oh and the power loader is definitely possible.

Moderator:

-Zach Oat (marketing supervisor)

Panelists:

-Chuck Terceira (president of DST)

-Jason Wires (prototype painter)

Beginning was a slide show presentation covering the entire line. No photos allowed since some of the art that was shown may not be approved yet. Plus, Zach asked nicely. Panelists were given free 2005 Red SDCC Blanks and a ticket for 1 of 4 prizes (2x Walking Dead SDCC set, 2x Marvel DofP SDCC set) upon entry. The 2005 Red SDCC blanks were just discovered inside DST's vault.

Audience Questions

For every person who asks a question, they get another prize from the DST vault. This time, it was the Minimates SDCC shirt from 2011.

-Shonen Jump?

-Anime is very stylized, hard to get right in Minimate form. Hard to work with in the past.

-How to decide 2 pack vs 4 pack vs blind?

-For the record, Chuck does not like blind boxes. Blind boxes are price point driven by the retailers, though. Also, Gamestop has limited shelf space but still want lots of product.

Movies are generally small universes so that is perfect for 4-packs.

Deep universes are good for 2-packs.

So really depends on depth of universe and the retailers.

-More stuff outside comics?

-DST commented that a lot of what they do aren’t comics. Maybe comics are 50% of the line (Note: it was a guesstimate that I’m sure another MMMV member will calculate).

-More Tarantino properties?

-DST has rights to Miramax movies, not Weinstein Group movies.

-Another Walking Dean Universe? (Note: Sorry, not sure what the exact question was, I’m not familiar with Walking Dead so I’m not sure about the answer either)

-Currently doing prison arc. May jump ahead to War arc.

-Powers? Or The Boys?

-Haven’t talked about either comic book properties. The Boys ship has sailed. Called an “intense property”. Powers would be fantastic though so “never say never”. Especially with the TV show coming up.

-Blind boxed or blind bagged?

-Bagged but you won’t be able to tell what it is since there are no numbers for different figures or anything. Chuck even considered a double bag to prevent easy feeling. Finding the translucent one will be hard. Same sculpt for translucent figure so you shouldn’t be able to tell which is which. Maybe the different plastic will have different feeling? Chuck asks you to “molest it”. No one at DST has tested if the different plastic feels different in the bag yet.

-Larger scale?

-No, Chuck hates micro scale too. Likes one size fits all like Marvel Minimates Series 1.

-Mentioned retailers such as Hastings, Kmart, Gamestop. Any more outlets for Minimates?

-DST pitches to all stores. Walmart is not interested. Target said they are a trend follower. Plus, one SKU 3 times a year is hard logistically. How to make shelf space for it when product comes out? Marvel probably won’t get past TRU.

-Rat Queens (the comic)?

-Zach, in an obviously tired state, kept asking the name of the property over and over. He thought he heard “Drag Queens” being said instead. And thinks that RuPaul’s Drag Race would be a good idea.

But they haven’t talked about it. Regarding comic book properties such as Saga, they are well known in the comics community, but may not be as well known outside of comics. So that is a concern. Invincible, not much talk at this point.

-Broadway line of Minimates?

-It was unfortunate that they never got to Phantom of the Opera. Rocky is on Broadway, though. There was talks about Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. Zach is in the New York office so we’ll see. Maybe Cats?

-Has a property approached you instead of DST approaching property?

-Chuck stated that Star Wars contacted DST and Chuck deemed them not fit since they had Pulp Fiction. (Note: This is a joke. Nothing against Pulp Fiction either but I believe it was stated in the past that Chuck would kill for Star Wars.)

In the past they have been approached, like Chef Duff. And relationships with current companies, the company may approach with another property too they that might think may be good for Minimates.

-Process of deciding new piece or reuse piece?

-Chuck noted that retooling, even if same exact piece, is easier. Hard to find old piece (Note: mold?) so easier to just retool exact piece even though everyone else thinks it is a parts reuse. When Chuck lists characters, stuff just comes out of his head. Tooling isn’t the biggest expense. It’s tampo. Original Wave 2 Spider-Man Minimate seemed cheap to make but was most expensive minimate due to all the webbing tampo all over.

-Heat activated Minimates?

-That is patented by Hasbro. Can’t do it. Also, Chuck may not want to do it, but the only property he’d consider is for Battle Beasts.

-Battle Beasts Series 2?

-IDW comic was okay but not great. Trying to find another publisher to do the comic. But wants something to drive the it. Would do the comic and lose money but have toys to drive it. Currently, not getting enough traction. Not dead, but maybe on life support?

-Power Loader for Aliens?

Possible for vehicles.

The lucky raffle winners were announced. And that was it!
