Popular Properties You Just Don't Want

Yo Gabba Gabba- the most annoying kids show ever. The voices are all off key, the songs are like nails on a chalk board. DJ Lance? Please. "WATCHING PAINT DRY IS.....AWESOME!!!"

Yo Gabba Gabba is one of the best shows for kids ever made! Weird Al was in an episode for pete's sake!

Compared to Barney, Dora, and all of the other "Kids, it is your turn to talk to the tv" garbage that is out there right now, I would put it up there with the classics like Mister Rogers' Neighborhood and Sesame Street.

Besides, Christian Jacobs is the creator of the show, and who doesn't love The Aquabats!?!?! If you haven't watched The Aquabats Super Show, the first season is now on Netflix streaming. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

First off, Mattalica's response: very funny. Good to see you can laugh about things.

As a collector, my only real area of interest is comic book super heroes. I say that specifically because I don't even care much for the movie figures, save for the occasional one that can pass as its' comic book counterpart. So, really, most non-comics properties are ones I don't really want. So eliminating all non-comics properties....

I really dislike the Walking Dead, and really wish a better comic had achieved that level of success. But it is what it is. Even those, though, I'm not so much against as not interested. The only Minimates that DST announced that I was adamantly against was the Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose set. Frankly, I find the comic an embarrassment. And I was not thrilled with the second Femme Fatales set. So I guess that's my answer: any juvenile, exploitative, comic. I'd rather just pretend they don't exist.

But they aren't exactly popular, so let's say.... Spawn.

I don't like Zombie horror. Never have. Never completely understood the appeal. (which is odd, because I like just about every other monster-based horror genre) So my enthusiasm for the Walking Dead line is in the deep negative.

And even as a kid, I've never cared for the sacrin sweetness of Disney movies. So while I recognize the mass appeal this has for a lot others, and admire the artistry of old fashion, hand drawn animation, any Disney based product would leave me personally cold. Well, almost any... the Black Hole had some wicked visuals despite the weak plot.

This is going to sound profoundly hypocritical but I never cared for zombies either. I'm still not that much into horror, or the torture porn that's passed for what I considered horror. None of that Saw for me but when Shaun of the Dead and 28 Days Later came out, for some reason I watched and embraced them both.

Not to get too deep but I think my distaste for zombies stemmed from my mother's closet alcoholism. Zombies are essentially people who lose their identities and you're left with shells that look familiar but act in bizarre and dangerous ways. Once I recognized that association between the drinking and zombies and how personal it was, I overcame the fear. Now I've got Zombieland in my home video collection and I'm a fan of The Walking Dead.

As for Disney, there are plenty of properties that wouldn't appeal to me that others adore. My overall standard is this; if it's not superdeformed, I might buy it. The Black Hole, the Tron films, The Rocketeer, and Pirates of the Caribbean (and probably any other live-action film) would be fine. Animated properties that don't exaggerate features to ridiculous proportions are okay so Peter Pan, The Incredibles, and most of the Disney Princesses would be fine. But I have no interest in seeing anthropomorphized animals forced into Minimates. No Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, or properties like Jungle Book and A Bug's Life for me.

Well, Sam, the philosiphers line was always going to be a Niche market at best.

I Kant argue with that one. I just hope the mods won't Locke the thread for this kind of talk.

My nephew was into that show, and it was too funky and over-the-top for my tastes. I like much of my art/music that has clearly been inspired by psychoactive drugs. Not so much the children's TV shows I've seen, though :D

BUT there was a song that my nephew really seemed to benefit from on that show that went "don't, don't, don't hit your friends!"

Transformers. I'd buy G.I.Joe in a heartbeat, but I've got no love for Transformers. Or Go-Bots.

Whawhawha? Say it ain't so, Boyd. Say it ain't so! Dissing Transformers is one thing. Lumping them in with Go-Bots is another. That's like comparing Minimates to these things:

Oh don't worry. While I have no interest in Transformers, they have been a wildly successful and enduring toy line, and I respect their innovation and quality. Even without being compared to Transformers, Go-Bots would still be considered some crappy toys. When your biggest success was a moped that transforms, then your toy line has probably failed.

Most anime shows don't appeal to me.Dragonball, pokemon are the only ones i like. The rest creep me out and disgust me.Though the dr who and star wars anime fan made videos are awesome. The style ain't bad it's just they way the story progresses and the character outfits and designs that seem really off to me.

i welcome all new lines. I'm all for anything that produces new parts for minimates.

I think Sports would make DST lots of money if they made a deal with pro teams. But I'd love just generic sports figures so we could get basketball and football jerseys and the like.

I'm not crazy about the Zombies from Walking Dead, but I love the humans. I'm not ecstatic about Best Of waves either, but I think theyre important to bring in new collectors. Not crazy about the black and white minimates either.

and Jay, no Doctor Who? tsk tsk tsk, have you seen Doctor Who? Took me forever to finally watch and get into it, but it's great! unless it became a sensation in America, like an "Americanized Doctor Who" (probably on a CW like channel) I don't see a line like that selling very well.

Well, at least they were creative with their character's names: "Scooter," the friendly robot. . .scooter.

And what a catchy tag line! "Robots that turn into vehicles. . ." And the elipsis at the end is so perfect. Like, they were too lazy/uninspired to even finish it

I don't know what I'm more surprised to learn... Boyd doesn't like Transformers, or Dino's a teacher.

I admit it - I'm a child of the 80's. I have big love for G.I.Joe, MUSCLE, Inhumanoids, MOTU, MASK, Fisher-Price Adventure People, even Jem and the Holograms. But not Transformers. I'll hand in my "Child of the 80s" membership card next week.

Don't forget their sweet-ass theme song: "The Go-Bots.....The Go-Bots...............THE GO-BOTS!!!!"

There were one, maybe two good Go-bot designs out of the whole line/show. Crasher being the standout. (cause by accident, the toy could actually do her signature stomp move) But for the most part... Lame.

I never ask anyone for their 80's cards... Unless you say something completely stupid like you don't like Die Hard. That'll cost you all kinds of cards IMO.

I always liked the commercial better.

Go-BOTS

Go-BOTS

Mi-tee ro-BOTS

Mi-tee VEE-HI-CULLS

GO-BOTS!

It was like some kind of Soviet propaganda theme.

And that inscrutable guy with the turtleneck sweater trying to explain cars turning into robots.

It's funny because there are some licenses listed here I really WANT to like but don't.

I recently made a significant effort once again to watch Doctor Who over my Christmas holiday. BBC America was nice enough to offer a marathon and I gave it another shot. And another. Still hasn't hooked me.

ThunderCats is similar. I wasn't a fan of the original cartoon but I gave the new version a try. It was okay but I can't honestly say it became must-see television for me the way other cartoons did.

That said, there are properties I have little or no knowledge of and buy the 'mates anyway because they look like cool toys. I've never played Halo nor do I own an Xbox but I've got plenty of the Halo Minimates and Warthogs. Likewise I'd probably get into Doctor Who and new ThunderCats 'mates if I had the disposable income.

Properties like GoBots and Transformers I simply don't see translating into Minimate form successfully.

Golden Girls? Absolutely. I'm so hot for Betty White it's embarrassing. I'd tap that so hard she'd break a hip.

What was the topic again?

Any form of a purple dinosaur (Barney)

Teletubbies

Annoying Orange

Since someone mentioned My Little Pony you should probably add Strawberry Shortcake, and Care Bears as well.

^^^^^^ Those would make me sad to see

Spy Versus Spy Would make me happy again. :)

Spy vs Spy.. so many variant possibilities. :)

I would not want to see Strawberry Shortcake either.. mainly because my wife would become a bigger minimate collector than I am. I am mainly a comic book minimate collector (DC/Marvel) but over the years I have given in to a lot of other licenses and movies.. So it is hard for me to say for sure what I would not buy in minimate form. Fun thread to read though.
