So, just ended... up and down show, as these things always are... I personally don't think the WWE does spectacle all that well, and this show was full of shenanigans, plus an amazing array of shameless plugs. The announcement of WWE Minimates was pretty cool, though.:P

There were two BIG developments, though, one of which I don't like at all, and one which I heartily approve. To be continued....

I liked the ending to the show. Didn't like the decision of GM so much. . .we'll see how that goes. Bryan got a heck of a lot of attention tonight with the wedding, faceoff with Rock, and Twitter war or whatever with Sheen. That's a good thing. He needs to stay popular so he can win the belt again soon.

I *HATED* the GM thing... so much. Maybe it's just because I'm so tired of the authority figure in general, but this seems like a particularly bad choice. That's the big development I didn't like. But the ending of the show... that's what I liked. A lot.

I have a feeling we're going to be seeing some kind of Daniel Bryan/Charlie Sheen thing at SummerSlam. Which I will hate, because the WWE always puts outsiders over their own talent, not caring how weak it makes their people look, but it's probably a great opportunity for Bryan. So... sigh.

Yeah, this feels like a gimmick GM. I can see it for a week, or even a few weeks, but not "permanent" (i.e., a few months or so). I know McMahon and everyone else hates the guy, but I would like to see them bring Bischoff back. Now he makes for a great, easy to hate sonofabitch GM. I think he was floundering around on TNA last I saw. Would probably not hesitate to jump ship for a bigger paycheck. Not like TNA wouldn't take him back when he was done or anything.

I also wouldn't mind seeing Paul E. Dangerously take over as a kind of settlement for the "lawsuit." He's just about unbeatable on the mic, and also easy to dislike intensely.

AJ as GM? That was a "What the?!?!" moment! I'm not sure I can see her as GM, but more AJ isn't a bad thing. I see an ending similar to when King of the Ring Regal was GM type ending where she just gets fired for going overboard.

The Punk ending, I like. I felt Punk lost a little of his edge but I hope he gets it back and brings some "pipe bombs" too. Well, I'm sure he never lost it. I just like him better as a bad guy. I miss his commentary too. And at least JR called a match. I was hoping main event. And JBL! Weird to see him not in a suit...

I was sad Mark Henry wasn't there to slap his son. That was his son, right?

Overall, I thought it was a fun and entertaining show. Not much wrestling (4 matches, I think), but NXT is where I get that fix. And please, no more Touts...

I know they want to feature AJ more, but this role seems like a particularly bad fit. It's the kind of move designed to feature someone that's hot at the moment, but can actually backfire and kill that person's momentum (see: Eve). Like I said, I think the whole authority figure role is soooooooooooo played out. How many guys have really excelled in the role? Vince, obviously, and Bischoff (who is still employed by TNA, and likely isn't going anywhere). Regal was great, back when it was commish and not GM. But who else? Vicki?

Also, it doesn't make a lick of sense why she would be the GM instead of marrying Danielson. She can't do both? Is the WWE trying to suggest that a woman can't be a wife and hold a job? Well, at least Bryan was featured heavily. He had three segments on the biggest Raw of the year, and interacted with both Vince and the Rock. I think it's safe to say they're not planning on dropping him back to the midcard any time soon.

Yes, the Punk heel turn (or, at least a return to being a tweener) was great, and much needed. He's lost almost all of his edge this year, and a whole ton of his heat. They've been subtly hinting that it was coming for the last few weeks by having both Eve and Big Show point out that his entire title run has been overshadowed by Cena. I think that "who do you want to see face the Rock?" fan poll gave away that SummerSlam will have a three way between Cena, Punk and Show (and who are the 10% of people that want to see Rock/Big Show?).

Couple other thoughts:

- Biggest pop of the night has to go to the Undertaker. I thought the crowd was strangely quiet, though. It's like they were expecting big things, and even when they got them, they were still waiting for something bigger. Rock announces that he'll be challenging for the WWE title at the Royal Rumble, and no one seems to care. AJ is the new GM and Punk turns heel, and the crowd is strangely disinterested. I thought St. Louis was a wrestling town? Maybe they had too many of those polite Cardinals fans in the building.

-Jerry Lawler drives me nuts. Cole gets the bulk of the announcing criticism, and rightly so, but Lawler is just as bad, if not worse. He's only really good as a wiseass heel, and he's just terrible as a babyface meant to provide meaningful insight. Last night he was talking about the usage of the MITB briefcase, and said something like "I think this is the first time someone has told their opponent when they are cashing in... no, in fact, I'm SURE of it." Which is, of course, not true, since RVD did the same thing against the Fruity Pebble Warrior himself at the second One Night Stand. Is it really that hard to remember, Jer?

-Reason #643,532,899 why I can't root for babyfaces: Paul Heyman gets HHH mad by mentioning his children. Heyman does it again, so Stephanie (who looks great, btw) comes out and says the same thing. She then runs Heyman down... by mentioning his children! Babyfaces are such hypocrites.

-It should be mentioned again... Lita! Always my favorite Diva. Probably, I think, because she looked like the only one I might actually have a shot with (don't worry, I know it's not true). But I was a mark for her and the Hardys, back in the day. And, even though I'm long over them, a part of me was hoping they were her protection (Edge would have been nice too). But I marked a bit for the APA; I always liked that gimmick. I'd love to see Lita come back. I understand Trish was there as well? I missed that bit.

I'm guessing Stone Cold wasn't there? Would've been awesome if he would've shown up and interacted with the Rock. But alas.

Lawler is way way way way way worse than Cole IMO. In fact, I think Cole is an excellent play by play guy, and not bad as a color commentator when he's got his black hat on. Lawler is useless nowadays. He was good when he was the bad guy back in the mid-90s, but now. . .ug. McMahon has both JR and Heyman on the payroll but doesn't utilize them as commentators, and that's unfortunate IMO.

I have thought RAW has been pretty horrible for a long time now. The 2 hour episodes were hard enough to get through that I was worried when they announced that they were going to three. I really liked last night's 1,000th episode though. It reminded me of the old Monday Night Wars when you had no idea what was going to happen. I was shocked that Stone Cold wasn't there but I enjoyed all of the other cameos as well as Mae Young's hand and finally knowing who's behind GTV.

p.s. I didn't know this thread existed. I've been a pro wrestler for 10 years now. I'm wrestling on some shows August 3rd and August 4th (Syracuse, NY and Rome, NY). Main Event of Aug 3 is John Morrison vs. Sami Callihan and Main Event of Aug 4 is Kevin Steen vs. Eddie Edwards. 2CW.com for more info. It's one of the best Indy Feds out there and if you enjoy WRESTLING, you'll love these shows. Check it out if you can.

The only thing I really like about Lawler is his old man jokes, though. They make me chuckle a little. I think it was last night he said that a wedding is grand but a divorce is a hundred grand. And I love how Cole really got into playing with those Brawling Buddies or whatever plushies. He's great when he's annoying! But overall, he doesn't get enough credit as he's always going to be in JR's shadow. I had high hopes for Regal but his work so far isn't great. Potential is there. CM Punk announcing, now that was surprising and refreshing!

Not sure if that was the reveal of GTV, but if Hornswaggle was the anonymous GM (bleh!), heck why not? I think both should stay unanswered. Or make it the Mae Young's son. He needs more TV time!

Stone Cold mentioned he had surgery on his knee recently and he didn't want to be on crutches on TV. Too bad as someone just needed to be stunned last night.

I liked Raw last Monday. It was probably the first raw in a while that I only fast fwd two segments. Loved the Lita appearance. I was hoping the protection was going to be Matt but I guess he left on bad terms. I did pop cause I had my APA shirt from the 90 s on. I was annoyed by HHH and Michaels but loved seeing the complete team minus the pornstar. Plus, I think I'm the only fan of Billy Gunn. Lol, I still ohave a Mr Ass shirt..

Love the Punk turn he was getting stale as a face. I'm a big fan but the hey I'm best in the world and I prove it only worked for Bret Hart. Now, if he starts winning on DQs and still keeps the best in the world bravado then I'll love it. I would love for Punk to start a stable again. Show and Punk?

I really liked the use of Daniel Bryan. I feel they are going to move him into the Chris Jericho heel role from his previous run. Calls out celebs gets embarrassed by the faces but doesn't damage the character. He has stayed hot for four months now without a belt so he doesn't need it. It was very surreal to see him with Rock in the ring. I never thought I would see that. Also, kudos to Rock for giving Punk a rub. He really sold the clothesline and didn't overshadow Punk in the Rumble segment. Too bad that means if Punk has the belt around Rumble he will most likely be dropping it to Rock. Then Cena vs Rock II at Wm.

I'd be fine with all of that. I cannot wait to start watching this episode when I get back in town Friday.

Or Cena wins the belt back by the Rumble (Cena vs. Punk vs. Show in a 3way or 4way) which sets up Rock vs. Cena II at the Rumble. Rock wins the belt again like he promised which sets up Rock vs. Punk at Mania. Although I think I'd still rather see Rock vs. Punk at the Rumble and Punk vs. Brock at Mania.

Sounds like some good matches I like what I have seen of Callihan when he was with Moxley and Kevin Steen is on a roll at the moment, I haven't seen anyone able to get a crowd going as well as he does since Bubba Dudley in ECW.

He must of as he is getting buried something rotten.

The thing that I find funny about swagger is that he deceptively tall. He doesn't look it but he taller then most of the roster except for the real big dudes like Kane, Show an UT

Swagger pissed people off by not getting over when he was WHC. I tend to think it wasn't his fault, since he was basically buried up until winning MITB, so people never really took him seriously. If they'd treated him like a big deal when he jumped to Raw from ECW, I think he could have been a star. Anyway, he's supposedly just counting the days until his contract's up.

Glad you found your way here, Mister M. I remember you mentioning that you're a wrestler in another thread, so I hope we can count on some insights here from you. I don't watch as much indie wrestling as I should; I just don't have enough time (I rarely even watch Raw, just read the recaps). Have you ever worked for Lance Storm in PWA?

And guys... Cole sucks.

Swagger has a weird lispy thing with his voice, so that limits his mike skills, which in turn limits his ability to get over in the absence of a genuinely good manager to be his mouthpiece (i.e., not Vicky Guerrero). He's got a good size, look, and skillset though. So, I can understand him not being champ, but to be treated like the lowest form of life on the roster is going a bit far IMO. And too bad, since he's decent in the ring. But, that's sometimes Vince's way.

I don't think his lisp would be an impediment for a heel, though. If anything, it's a good way to draw (admittedly lowbrow) heel heat. Like I said, I think his burial is mostly due to his failing with the push they gave him, which I still think is more the result of circumstances then anything he did. It also didn't help that he was working with the Big Show, which I don't think has ever been good for anyone's career.

Question for you all: where do you go to read about wrestling? I'm always looking for good sites, since it's so hard to find decent writers that know what they're talking about. I read the Masked Man when he posts on Grantland, and the IGN weekly Wrestling Wrap-Up, but that's about it. Any other suggestions?
