Rebuilding the Minimate c3 Batcave

Off topic a little and not to do with the Batcave, but you could totally rebuild that castle if you wanted. you could build just bout anything with Lego.

I measured up the bricks compared to Lego Minifigures and Minimates and found the difference in adjustment was only by about 1 brick or so in height. When I first got into Minimates I built a Minimates Medical Centre (these were for hospitalised minimates) i'd either got them in ebay lots or were unfortunately broken out of packet.

I collected all my white bricks and used a Paradiso Baseboard to build it. I'll throw up some pictures.

4384967471_07f9564dbb.jpg

The Medical Centre had two floors, on the first floor was reception, then the staircase leading up to the medical ward where the beds were. Obviously these are old pictures, I no longer have the medical centre or the figures but it does emphasize my point about the castle. You could look on Bricklink for the actual castle and instructions to build it, just build one brick extra under the window so that it is to scale with Minimates.

Hey Guys,

after a brief layoff from sorting stuff due to my Crohns flare up today i was able to sit down and do some sorting, no actual pictures yet but i've edged way closer to an actual build. :)

My internal bleeding has stopped, so now it's just a case of hopefully time permitting the new anti-inflammatory drugs kicking in and i'll be back up to full speed (fingers crossed).

I'd originally sorted out from the LDD build an inventory of bricks i would need, these bricks were sorted into item descriptions under colour content and quantity. I wanted to make sure i didn't miss a brick out

Today I sorted through colours, Black, Brown, Blue, Tan & White. It took me a couple of hours to do this, starting around 4pm and finished at 11pm.

Out of the bricks i needed for these colours i found:

-----:-Quantity Needed-/--Bricks Found.

Black:------48---------/--found 48.

Blue:------187---------/--found 143.

Brown:-----22----------/--found 7.

Green:-----36----------/--found 4.

Tan:-------4-----------/--found 4.

White:-----31----------/--found 26.

The Green pieces are actually translucent green tiles for the computer monitor in the batcave control room, I never expected to actually have any so to find 4 is a start, i'm not so worried by that, but today was a good scavenge, out of the 328 bricks in total i needed i've found 232. Which isn't so bad.

Tomorrow i finish the scavenge by looking for dark & light grey pieces, these are the core of the building really, considering there is about 750+ bricks to this build and i only have two colours to scavenge in i should do quite well.

Obviously the more bricks i find in my own boxes the less i will have to payout to lego or bricklink direct. I still have hundreds of gizmo and awesome type black bricks, tonight while searching i'd not ruled out making a batcopter or batwing of some kind when i'm a little more content with the batcave.

I'll hopefully have some actual pictures soon, i guess it depends when the core of the building begins how many of the dark & light grey bricks i'll actually have, i get paid in about 1 week from now, so by then i will have a good order list ready for bricklink and i'll be able to finish the preliminary build and share pictures with you.

Thanks to everyone who has shown an interest, and for the patience while i've not been so well to update this in a while.

Look at all these organised bricks!

I spent all day yesterday doing the Light & Dark Grey so that i have a better idea of what I need off bricklink, I am finished scavenging for parts now so I've already begun the shopping process on bricklink and putting in enquiries for bricks and pieces. Considering the majority of the bricks i've found to build it will come from my collection i've done well.

I'll begin tomorrow by piecing together some of the furniture, i wont be actually building the batcave until those bricklink orders are in, mostly because the specialist archway and plates i need will be in there.

I'm getting rather excited now, and i think Bruce is too! haha.

6658497883_7529914ce8_z.jpg

Unfortunately because of the hold up now waiting on bricklink i really can't go any further. Theres some key pieces missing to complete the computer monitor, mainly the notches and handles to prop up the back screen, as well as the translucent green tiles for the screen itself (about 32 of these). As for the main structure I need 9x arch pieces and alot of 1x2 corner bricks to make it sturdy, until i get them theres no point in going any further past this stage.

It was fun to get a little building done even if it was only for a brief amount of time. Bricklink orders have been placed and paid for, all i can do now is be patient. I have purchased the bricks I need all from UK sellers, so if they are about their business and up and at em I should have all of the bricks by the end of next week. I'll update this again when I've got the Preliminary build finished.

I've been waiting on Bricklink orders to arrive, so that I can finish my preliminary build of the Batcave, and because I have absolutely nothing else left to do I decided to think ahead to the extension on the 3rd floor, in this room will be a Study for Bruce Wayne, he'll be here when the call comes through for him to make like a bat and save the day with Boywonder :)

I've been making some Lego Furniture on LDD and posting up designs of it in the Lego Digital Designer Pool on flickr, so i thought i'd post a couple of screen caps on here to show you guys if you are interested.

Bookcase

6674329765_67d18702d4_z.jpg

I plan to have 2 of these, they are 6 studs wide, i might have more depending on the size of the study, i've still not worked out fully how big the study will be, but from the way i was thinking i will have as small archway with one of these bookcases either side of the doorway on the main wall.

Couch

6677615177_05b9ee8af2.jpg

In front of the main fireplace will be a rug and the comfy couch, across from that will be the desk, lamp and draws/cabinets. I'm sure they'll be a main window somewhere but again this is still early days.

The extension will most likely be here:

6677643605_e724fac2a0.jpg

This to me seems the more likely place to have the extension, where the over hang to the stairs is mostly is unused, I think if i move the supporting structure further along towards the control room and add a second support structure as well as archway pieces for support it will be plenty enough to support a 3rd floor study.

If that doesn't work I am going to put the study opposite the grandfather clock (3rd floor), which is just above Batman's changing wardrobe (located on the 2nd floor). here is quite a strong location but because it would be an extra floor above the changing area, changing Bruce to Batman could be quite fiddly. So i'm going with my original plan to have the Study above the staircase first.

I'll update this again soon when i have more pictures either of furniture, physical model builds or study layouts.

So I thought i'd update this project as I got significant build time in this afternoon, first things first I apologize for the use of flash in the pictures, it got really late on here and the lighting in the house is incredibly poor, the pictures wouldn't of been worth showing if i'd not used flash. At least you get to see where i'm up to though :-)

6685736641_e219e6fbd2_z.jpg

WIP #1 - Batcave

The first thing I want to change is the foundation stud size, currently x6 in height they are too small and Bruce would have to duck to walk through them, I suspect this is a c3 brick to lego conversion thing, I probably miscounted how high the original pillars were, it's not a big deal as its really easily rectified.

*Note* if you see any mismatched colour bricks, corner pieces or plates these will be changed to a better colour at a later date, sometimes i've not had the exact grey so i've picked the closest colour, rest assured they'll be replaced in the final version.

I've reversed the control room so the monitor is facing the 2nd floor as opposed to the original. There probably will be a second baseboard accompanying this so when that is added it might very well be reversed back to the original position.

The Staircase you see is incredibly basic and yes I will be changing it. As noted in the first LDD shots, they were designed this way to get by some of the building restrictions for the software.

6685737495_cc2da52ee4_z.jpg

WIP #2 - Communications & Console Room

There isn't much to change, maybe some of the slopes will be redesigned in the final version, i'd like to swap out some of the colours and as above it maybe reverted to its original configuration.

6685738045_a8e23a2493_z.jpg

WIP #3

Ok first error here is that i didn't anticipate the clock door not opening (ha) but i'll figure that out quickly enough, I also want to redesign the clock too, its a little too basic and i'm sure with some experimenting with the bricks i can get a more accurate grandfather clock/door.

I might re-use the method I used for an opening container door on my shipping container build, or go for something entirely different.

6685738965_9f9f3c0b12_z.jpg

WIP #4

There isn't really much to change out here, i'm happy with how this part looks, the only missing pieces are the 1x3 bricks in blue that i'm still waiting on, here would be a good point to check the left side balcony over the stairs, this is where i intend to extend the 3rd floor to include Bruce's study.

I hope you enjoyed looking at the photographs of the Work In Progress model. I'm pretty satisfied that from this point onwards i'll be able to recreate a fully functional Batcave i'll just keep chipping away at the tasks and things I want to change.

As always when I have a significant update on this model project i'll post up pictures and plans.

Hey Guys,

No pictures at all today, but I am updating it, that is if you can put up with my waffling. The reason why there is no pictures is because I am still waiting on two parcels from Bricklink, these are for the 1x2 Grey Corner Pieces, the blue 1x3 bricks and the 1x1 translucent tiles for the screen. So what did I do today? I spent a significant chunk of build time altering the batcave and making modifications to it. If those 2 Parcels turn up tomorrow I'll add in them where they are needed and take pictures so there is one big update showing todays and tomorrows work, Here is a shortlist of what I have done today:

1. Swapped out the Brick stairs from the Second floor, using a standalone black set of stairs to lead down towards the supporting pillar. I've then added a few 2x4 bricks to create a small step down into the Computer Control Room & Consoles.

2. I've changed the Grandfather clock hinges so the door actually opens now. Some of the pieces are not brown and i'll obviously get them swapped with a quick bricklink order providing that they have them available in Brown.

3. Changed the 2nd floor foundation height to 7 Studs. This is to match the c3 height as i'd originally miscalculated the height of the c3 bricks by x1 stud.

4. I've gutted the consoles in the Computer Control Room, i've redesigned the consoles so they are both two-tone grey with buttons, tiles and plates, i've rotated the control room so that the entrance panels are facing the stairs, so when he drops down into the control room he can walk straight in. I've tiled the computer room and added a plug socket to the main server and computer monitor. I've also added two wall screen computers on a mounted display that move up and down.

I still have quite a fair way to go with the actual lift renovation as well as needing more grey bunker pieces for the main building and changing area. The biggest difference is the computer control room, which i hope i will be able to show you all properly tomorrow. I'll take the shots of the updates anyway even if the two parcels don't arrive, but just take them in the morning/afternoon so i wont have to use flash on the pictures.

I'm really excited to be doing this project and hope that with some more build time i'll make it a brilliant batcave that I... I mean Bruce can be proud of.

As promised here is my update!

6694657475_f7d307ce70.jpg

I really got stuck into the project yesterday, I started by tackling the most highlighted issues with the preliminary design, unfortunately due to the light restrictions and how poor the pictures turn out after nightfall I wasn't able to update this blog until today.

The good news though is that I can take you through the improvements picture by picture and the pictures will be nice and clear so you can see everything.

6694652413_431e4f9b8d.jpg

The first thing I changed was resize the supporting archway struts on the 2nd floor, this is so that there is more clearance for Bruce to stand underneath the arch, this was miscalculated by me as in the c3 version the studs are x7 in height not x6 as what i done on the preliminary build.

6694653257_4f461a61e7.jpg

6694653733_1da4f6ff6d.jpg

6694658739_d089bcf05b.jpg

Next I set to work on the Grandfather clock, removing the middle pieces and redesigning the hinges so that the door opens and closes as it should.

I probably did have the right idea with the brick clips initially but i just didn't have them sorted in the correct order or aligned properly so they could move.

I'll have to order another small amount of brown bricks from Bricklink to replace the grey and black you see in the photo.

6694654357_d97dae0dc3.jpg

In my next task I swapped out the bricks from the 2nd floor stairs to replace it with a standalone prebuilt stair piece in black, this pretty much takes him down to the supporting strut and i finished off the staircase with a small walkway step leading into the control room.

The stairs still aren't finished, i'd like to add some more detail to them yet and its not a certainty they will stay like this.

I just thought this would be a better more sturdy solution in the mean time.

6694655381_2341456d12.jpg

6694655783_c7daa33297.jpg

The real big development from yesterdays build is the computer control room with consoles.

I've completely gutted this room, i've rotated the original layout so that the entrance pillars are now either side of the stairs, when Batman comes down the stairs he'll be facing the control room straight away.

6694656373_4923a03d6a.jpg

6694658023_0a1f967319.jpg

6694659503_9eff4ac86a.jpg

Next i redesigned all the consoles. I prefer this look to the original, the mismatched blue, black and two tone grey was awful, but it was only ever going to be a temp anyway.

I've added more decorated technical tiles and computer screens as well as tiled the computer room floor and added a plug socket to the main monitor & server.

6694656945_151777cf5d.jpg

The final addition was something i created myself, a mounted two screen comp display over hanging the room. This is used to display various txt files and programs while Batman can be briefed on the main console screen.

6694659123_c082fa11a5.jpg

This final picture shows the Batcave when you rotate the board, you can see the main archway and this is where the Batmobile will go.

Obviously I don't know yet how big the Batmobile is, if i'm going to have an encased driveway for the batmobile my thinking is that i'll need a 2nd baseboard to achieve it.

I guess the plan is to finish this bit off first but it's good i have some room there to develop it if need be.

I hope you liked all the pictures, comments, ideas and suggestions are encouraged. As always if you'd prefer to see the larger shots on flickr the Batcave project folder is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/superiorraw/sets/72157628767065715/

I thought i'd leave it 24 hours or so before another update, there has been significant updates to continue blogging about it, you can retrieve my comments from my signature below.

Added Features

*Added the Telephone to the 3rd floor, mounted on a hinge brick so when flipped back it reveals the switch/button to the Elevator/Secret Clock Door.

*Added a clothes prop/hangar to the Changing area so Bruce Wayne can change to Batman.

*Swapped out 1x2 brown bricks on the base of the secret door/grandfather clock, replaced with a 1x6 brown brick to make the base stronger.

*Due to an unforeseen problem with the 3rd floor baseplate, an 8x11 plate I ordered wasn't taking so well to the 2nd floor support beams, i've swapped this out with the original plates i'd intended to use for the study, as a result the 3rd floor is now more secure, the entire plates for the 3rd floor were reconfigured.

*finished off the Elevator outer walls and main facade of the building, added the spire at the top.

*due to the swap around of plates on the 3rd floor balcony, the facade to the left of the clock has been extended by about 3 studs to cover the corner.

Here are the updated pictures.

As always to see this development in it's entirety it's best viewed on the project folder at Flickr.com here:

I probably wont update this for a bit now, maybe a couple of days, i'll need to spend some time working out the width and size of the study, where the furniture will go and install the 1x2 grey corner pieces to finish off the outer section of the balcony to the left.

Hope you like what i've done so far. Comments and feedback about this project are welcome, or if you have questions regarding the software or sites I use just ask away :)

I am absolutely loving these updates Rich, the cave is starting to look phenomenal.

I'm reall interested in the numerous parts around your computer monitor, specifically in this picture

batcomputer

where are the various floor tile parts from, around the chair and the grate bits?

this is also very clever...

power cable

I'd love quick look at how you've attached that all up.

Dang urban, your bat cave is looking amazing!Keep up the great work!!!!!

Thanks so much for this comment!, it's always nice to see people appreciate the time and effort you put into a project.

Due to bricklink delivery delays on the sellers part (just an oversight) i'll have to wait longer on the pieces so there wont be any update now for a few days maybe a week.

I believe the patterned tiles for the wiring are from Lego Star Wars (I could be wrong) If you want to know for definite I could find out which set they came with, the standard grey tile pieces are available both on lego directly or bricklink they are 2x2 Grey Tiles.

Thanks again for your kind comments, i've had plenty of positive feedback on this project, even inspired other friends to build Lego themselves, its rewarding and has its challenges as well.

I am planning on doing a pictoral step by step at some point, which i will host on flickr and link back to here when I'm finished, i've had a couple of enquiries on how to build certain aspects but for now i'd probably best wait until i am actually finished with the full build. That way when the step by step pictoral guide is made it will bridge the gap between having a c3 batcave and how to turn it into a modified and hopefully people see much better version. :)

sorry to ask another question...

i've looked on ebay and I'm trying bricklink now, do you know the name of the 1x4 metal grate type tile parts are called? the bits on the floor by the computer room, you have four of them next to a couple of 1x4 circuit panels.

You would need to get these: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=2431px2

They are decorated 1x4 Tiles. :)

Don't worry about asking questions, i encourage it and i'll do all i can to help and share :)

That Batcave looks awesome!

Thank You so much for your positive comment! :) I'm glad you like it.

Bruce Wayne's Study Room (3rd Floor)

As some of you have been following my developments, I have extended the 3rd floor to include a study for Bruce Wayne, so that while working in his Study he gets a call and walks out onto the 3rd floor Balcony in front of the Grandfather Clock.

Today I spent some time figuring out the space i had on the 3rd floor, as well as working out the size of each furniture pieces and where they will go, I'd originally planned a bigger study but due to the space requirements some of my other ideas had to be culled. Never the less i think this layout works aces anyway and it will look great when it is installed.

Here are the WIP pictures, obviously the Grey you see for the bookcase and sofa will be swapped out with Brown.

6726580295_10c90627b1_z.jpg

6726580907_821eaf8193_z.jpg

I hope you like the update, Yesterday I put an order through for the Power Functions Pieces and when they arrive i'll begin major work on the lift and elevator chamber. This will be the most complex and challenging part to the whole of the Batcave, I have also recently modified the Grandfather clock and done significant work on the 3rd floor balcony, however I am having to wait on Paint Apps drying before I can take a full photograph.

They'll hopefully be some clearer shots of this in tomorrows update.

Ah!

Sorry, right those grated panels are 1x4 regular tiles, the grated design is actually a sticker from the most recent Garage sets.

http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=7642stk01

it would be far easier for you to acquire those stickers and less costly rather than buying the Lego Garage set just to obtain the sticker sheet

I will probably get round to doing an Alfred custom at some point, as it doesn't look like he'll be released officially.

Awesome, don't forget if you have any other questions regarding these pieces just ask, i've searched bricklink quite a bit so its quicker for me to link you to them than it is for you to trawl through their extensive catalogue! :)

I will be doing a full pictoral building guide for the various additional parts of the Batcave i've added to, it will most likely be added on my blog or website when i finish the complete build.

My last update was almost 1 week ago, there has been a legitimate reason for this, as i was waiting on the arrival of my Lego Power Functions pieces. Obviously as the end of the project draws closer the updates will be bigger but spread out and less frequent.

On with the pictures and goodness hey? Here as always is an updated list of what has changed since the last update of 19th of January, followed in sequence by the pictures to reflect those updates.

Added Features

*changed the design of the Grandfather clock, added pendulum and painted it gold.

*extended the wall piece and included a custom painted gold picture frame.

*assembled and installed the furniture for the Study Room, including personal computer & desk, bookcase, lamp & couch.

*added the 3rd floor exterior wall to the study.

*finished the left hand side of the exterior wall and replaced incorrect colour bricks to the 3rd floor.

*finished the back monitor display for the computer room.

*added the 1x2 Grey corner pieces into the Elevator Chamber. (this isn't so noticeable but is quite intergral to the support between the 2nd and 3rd floors).

Elevator Development!

It has taken the best part of 24 hours to work out the mechanics of the Elevator and despite many frustrations, with the help of some online friends i was able to assemble a working elevator, you can see this from the pictures links below.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7171/6754808273_f589fdb4ae.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7158/6754808805_c461c93999.jpg

Also i've uploaded a very short video showing the elevator working, some points of note:

*This is a preliminary design, intended to work out the mechanics, the next step is to reduce the bricks and size and try and install it into the batcave.

*The elevator car appears to stick at the base of the chamber, i'm intending to modify the holding chamber so the car slots in and moves alot more freely, i'll possibly use tile pieces so there isn't as much friction.

#Lego Elevator Video here>>

Looking ahead

I am pretty close now to a final model, with the exception of the tiles and plates needed to finish the study and furniture (replacement of correct coloured bricks) the exterior wall and windows to the study and the installation of the Batcave its pretty much finished.

My intentions to keep adding to the batcave would be to install a small driveway and rockery to cover the entrance, for the Batmobile, this will come at a much later date though so expect there to be a substantial gap between the main building development and the driveway.

I hope you liked this update, if you are a Youtube user please add my account and request my friendship, it's always great to have more creative friends to talk to and share projects with. Comments and feedback are always welcome.

Hey thanks for the suggestion!

That is a really cool Batmobile, however at over $100 and the pure fact it is built to Lego Minifigure specifications would mean i'd still have to tweak it and modify it just to fit a Minimate figure. It is probably the right size, in terms of height, but i think my best chance would be to custom build my own based on the blue prints of the small and larger versions made in c3.

I will get round to doing it, but right now the actual bulk of my cash is going on the batcave itself.

Hey Guys,

I made changes to the front wall and supporting walls to the elevator, aside from actually being installed into the batcave this is as tweaked and modified as it could possibly get.

Before I pull it down and install it in the Batcave i thought it would be cool to share with you.

The Project aside from the elevator installation and a few more additional tiles and walls in the study is almost finished. :)

.....when your ready I'll officially sponsor (or commission) a Batmobile & a Tumbler .

I NEED a Tumbler.
