  1. Looking at these pictures, does it seem that most of these figures don't have the ability to hold accessories like guns, swords, etc? That would suck, especially for customization purposes.
  2. So my question now is, if DCD isn't arbitrarily tossing out Minimates, but cannibalizing them for a 4" line, would they consider farming them out to DST, who know how to make these little guys turn a profit? All wild speculation. Hi I was thinking along the same lines. The 3.75 inch line shares many features with the Minimates--they are small, come in packs, wide range of character, and probably most of all seem to involve a lot of part/mold reuse, just like the minis. One place where the Mattel line beats out Minimates is that the iNfinite Heroes (Dc's announced 3.75 inch line) will probably have wide exposure at the box stores like Target, Wal-Mart, Toys R US, etc, whereas Minimates are limited to comic book stores. I don't know the particulars of the DC license, and whether it would be hard for DST to simply produce the Minimates for its smaller market. I would be happy only getting waves twice a year if that meant sparing the line, and DST can still do what they do best: market to the local comic shops and online dealers. Maybe DST is negotiating that right now, and can't say anything for jeapordizing those discussions. The best thing to do right now is wait a bit. After C3, I never thought we would see official DC Minimates again until the first three waves took me by surprise. Perhaps the DST/DC Direct crew have even more awesome surprises waiting for us.
  3. Do you think the news of DC Minimates' possible demise might have something to do with this? I don't want to rain on the parade, but it seems to have generated a lot of discussion.
  4. I am doing this myself. For my 8 year old nephew who likes building toys, I am giving him the old Spiderman 3 Megablocks Bank set with a a couple Spiderman minis (Venom, Spiderman, and Sandman). For some of my other friends, I am giving gifts related to their interests (BSG fan got a Cylon boxed set not to long ago). Also giving a Ghost Rider to a friend who loved the movie. Too bad I didn't know more DC fans, I would have been able to give DC figures away too!
  5. Ohhh, must have! When are these coming out?!?! Could this be what is killing the Minimates? It would be a shame. A bit like ending the marketing of oranges when you get a new shipment of apples!
  6. I have to say I pre-ordered 7 (I even got extras of Grodd/Flash for a couple customs I have in mind) but have preordered a smaller amount of 8 (I ordered only one set instead of a whole case like I normally do). Since my comic shop sells out of DC all the time, but the Avengers wave and Spiderman 3 wave are all still clogging the shelves, I am surprised it is DC that may be getting the axe and not Marvel. I may have to order a whole case of 8 now, just to throw out my vote of confidence. As some here have said, maybe we are reading too much into this. Still, it never pays to take something you love for granted (and DC Minimates are my favorite collectable, even before my long-time favorite Transformers!)
  7. Reading all the facts, I would say this could go either way. The "this is the last of the line" could imply this was what they had AT THIS TIME, ie they have yet to solicit waves past what we've already seen. It doesn't sound good though. I don't think it could hurt to write polite, calm emails in support of the line. Maybe even letters would be nice. (I stress the words "polite" and "calm;" I think most of us are both, but there are always those of us who may let our passions get the best of us). Even if DC isn't planning on pulling the plug, maybe someone will appreciate how much we enjoy their product and want to see more.
  8. I am still hovering between denial and anger, myself. Of the characters who are absolute MUSTS for me, though, are probably Two Face and Catwoman (for Batman's Rogues), Green Lantern Golden Age for Justice Society, Beast Boy for Teen Titans (there was no Beast Boy announced, right?), and Martian Manhunter for Justice League. I know some of them came out for C3, but I think they need them for DC Direct to "complete the set". If I get those, I might be able to talk about acceptance. No guarantees, though.
  9. I have emailed askdcdirect@dccomics.com Hi there I have really enjoyed your DC Minimates line of action figures. I am disappointed and alarmed, however, to learn the line's future is in question. Please consider bringing back the line as it definitely has its hard-core fans who purchase every single figure (and in some cases, multiples of figures!). Could I suggest including vehicles such as the Batmobile or playsets such as Justice League headquarters? That might add more to the "playability" factor to broaden the interest in the line. Thank you again for backing such a fine product! Sincerely Josh Waterman
  10. Based on what I have seen, if I were working at DC Direct, this is what I would put out: Team set: JLA: Superman, Batman, WW, Flash (Barry Allen), Hal Green Lantern, Aquaman, J'onn J'onz. Most of these exist already, so it would be kind of sucky, but we could get a Barry Allen 'mate, and J'Onn J'onz in the DCD style. (BONUS: they could throw in little tree arm and leg accessories so you can start to turn the figures into their appearance in their first case, the one against the Appellaxians) JSA: (classic): Flash, Green Lantern, Spectre, Ma Hunkel, Hourman, Hawkman, Sandman, Atom (the first appearance!) or, the current: Green Lantern, Dr Midnight, Hourman, Liberty Belle . . . egads, now that I think of it, who would be in a "current" boxed set??? The current JSA is huge. the new Mr Terriffic would be a must, though. Classic Teen Titans, New Teen Titans or, Character-centric boxed set, a la the Pocket heroes: I would initially go with Flash, Superman, and Batman, because from what I heard with JLU figures, these seem to be the best sellers: Batman: Batman, Alfred, Gordon, Two Face, classic Catwoman, Robin Flash: Flash, Mirror Master, Captain Cold, Trickster, Pied Piper Superman: Sups, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Business Lex or 70's Superfriends Lex, Silver Age Brainiac others: Green Lantern: Hal, Alan Scott, Kyle Rayner, John stewart, Ganthet, Parallax Shazam! (DC seems to be going through a Shazam renaissance, what with the DCD figures, Trials, the Jeff Smith book, etc): Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr, Black Adam, Sivana, Tawky Tawny
  11. I am gonna stick to my wave 8 guesses here, because they SHOULD be made: Orion/Darkseid Black suited, mullet-head Superman/Doomsday Fire/Ice Martian Manhunter/Dr Light
  12. Replace "Flash" with "Alan Scott Green Lantern."
  13. Only a handful of the 52 were shown, so it could be. Personally, I hope the DCAU becomes formally inducted as one of the 52 (which would include Batman Beyond).
  14. The minimate version of Spectre is the classic Jim Corrigan version (or perhaps the generic, host-free Spectre that ran amok during Day of Vengence, if you like, although his face is too serene for that). The Hal Jordan version had a flaming circle in the middle of his chest, a one-piece suit that recalled his Green Lantern costume, and a Green Lantern mask. Forgot, Star Sapphire: the Star Sapphire gem is like a Green Lantern ring, as another poster mentioned, but the gem acts as a parasite, taking over the mind of a host. The "classic" Star Sapphire is arguably none other than Carol Ferris, Hal's girlfriend! There have been other Star Sapphires (including a golden age one that battled the Jay Garrick Flash in the 40s) as well.
  15. I love em! Glad to see the Flash. This is obviously Wally West. Hope we can get a Barry Allen soon. I love the Batman, for the same reasons another poster indicated: he reflects the Neal Adams/Jim Aparo era, which was the era holding court when I started picking up comics. Clayface looks a lot like the animated version. I wonder if this is a hold-over from C3? Grodd is great. He looks a lot like a custom version I saw not too long ago. Grodd, along with lesser luminaries such as Ma Hunkel and Ambush Bug, proves ANY character is a possibility. Bravo!
  16. Here are my guesses: Orion/Darkseid Black suited, mullet-head Superman/Doomsday Fire/Ice Martian Manhunter/Dr Light
  17. Hey, sorry guys about the DCD question. Guilty as charged, my bad.
  18. Thanks for your time! For the DC Direct waves, we saw Green Lantern with Star Sapphire and Aquaman with Ocean Master. I thought these were fairly odd pairings, because I would think Green Lantern's most well-known villian is Sinestro and Aquaman's is arguably Black Manta. Will we be seeing these two big baddies any time soon? Or could this hint at a Legion of Doom set?
  19. Welcome aboard! That is a pretty cool mate there. I frequently go to Ebay to look for custom MiniMates, but I seldom see that many, and usually they are quite expensive (understandable, because of all the work that goes into them). I did purchase one custom, a three inch Colossus who was sold to raise money for either this site or one of the big two. I love it even more than the official 2 inch version.
  20. I don't know if I ever did this wish list! I'll play! 1. Martian Manhunter 2. Flash 3. Dr Midnight 4. Mr Terrific II 5. Captain Cold 6. Amazo 7. Black Adam 8. Question 9. Captain Atom 10. Dr Light (the eeeeevil one) Batman Variant: First Appearance Batman Sups Variant: First Appearance Superman (or Kal-L of Earth 2, with the white streaks in his hair!)
  21. My entry to the Villian-Mates contest and first "non-quick" custom ever: The Shade! Here is his pic from DC Who's Who: Here is the pic of the Shade (sorry he looks kind of blurry): Here is a pic with him and a few members of the Injustice Gang gloating over their prize: As soon as I saw the previews for the Penguin minimate, I knew I had to make the Shade. The chest is made from Lady Deathstrike's vest, and although it doesn't come through clearly, I used the loincloth thingy from Deathstrike to make coat tails for Shade. Learned a lot from this one, and I hope to do many many more.
  22. Hi everyone Inspired by the awesome stuff I see on this forum, I have started customizing my own Minimates. I am working on a figure for the Design a Villian contest, but I made a mistake. I thought I had picked up acrylic paints, but instead I got enamel. I finished painting the figure, but it doesn't look right because of the paint (it dried kind of globby). Would painting over with acrylic work? I tried sanding off most of the enamel and painting over it, but since my airbrush doesn't work right since using enamels with it, I painted the rest by hand. the good news is the figure is mostly one color. When I seal it with acrylic spray, will that help cover up the brushstrokes? Also, I was wondering if anyone can give me some pointers with the airbrush. I tried a couple different ways of cleaning the attachments, but the enamel is pretty sticky on the attachments. The paint has not dried completely--I had started soaking the parts immediately after working with the brush the first time--but I can't get the enamel paint off completely. Also, the airbrush flow is very thin, then chokes off entirely, so I think it may be unclogged. Can anyone please give me some advice on fixing this? I have the cheap mini-airbrush available at Wal-Mart (if I decide customizing is really the hobby for me, I will probably invest in a higher quality brush), so maybe there si a place where I can get the tube and nozzles separately. Thanks for any help, and I apologize if I put this in the wrong place.
  23. Not familiar with the character, but that is one sweet 'Mate! Very crisp paint job, too, I like.
