  1. Strike 3... I've tried my 3rd KMart in northern Utah to no avail. Getting jealous of the rest of you.. I just wish I knew if they were all sold out or just haven't hit the area yet....dry.png

If you go to Kmart.com you can check the stock in a particular store by typing in the UPC.

Where? I can't seem to find the option even though I have the UPC listed earlier.

  2. I think if Mattel dumps the DC license it’ll be because DC doesn’t know how to market itself to today’s audiences.

JLU hasn’t been on TV for 10 years (yeah, it’s in reruns in some weird package CW runs, but most kids are probably watching NEW cartoons on cable), Brave and the Bold/Beware the Batman skew obscure purposely, GL:tAS and Young Justice got canceled, and Teen Titans is pretty much just about the Teen Titans... so there’s basically no TV media to support the characters. (And what TV media there is has made John Stewart and Guy Gardener more prominent then Hal Jordan, so I can guarantee there are kids who see the Nu52JL and say “Look it’s Batman, Superman, Aquaman but he has no beard, Cyborg, Wonder Lady... I don’t know this guy, and why is Green Lantern not black?”)

Aside from Batman and Superman they have had TWO other characters get movie: Jonah Hex and Green Lantern. Both Bombed.

In terms of videogames, there’s the Arkham games which are Batman and everyone already loves Batman. And there’s Injustice, which while getting good reviews is an alternate world so it does little to promote awareness for the versions of the characters people might see on cereal boxes. (alternate skins excluded)

I don’t think kids like Nu52 comics, kids don’t read comics for the most part and I don’t think DC’s crazy “must grab mainstream headlines with shock news: LESBIAN TERRORIST GREEN LANTERN!!! FIRST LESBIAN TERRORIST CHARACTER IN COMICS! GOING TO KILL TRANSGENDERED VEGAN GREEN LANTERN NEXT MONTH! FIRST EVER TRANSGENDER VEGAN CHARACTER TO BOTH APPEAR AND DIE IN COMICS!!! SEVEN VARIANT COVERS BUY NOW!” campaign is going to change that.

So if DST got the license to make minimates because Mattel’s stranglehold is over... do we really expect them to do any better?

We need kid sales at TRU, so it’s mostly gonna be Superman and Batman variants because kids know who they are. Action Leagues not based around either of those two peg warmed like no tomorrow (Action League sold fine when it based on a TV shows kids knew all the characters from, and it sells great as a Toy Story and Wrestling line, but as a DC comics line no one was psyched about Firestorm and Green Lanterns) , so there’s no reason to think minimates would be different.

it’s gonna be stuff like this:

    4xBatman Vs Joker

    4xBatman and Robin (Modern Deco)

    2xSuperman Vs Lex Luthor

    2xGreen Lantern Vs Sinestro

    4xBatman and Robin (Classic redeco)

    2xSuperman and Wonder Woman

    4xBatman Vs Riddler

    2xFlash Vs Captain Cold

    4xBatman and Robin (1966 redeco)

    4xBatman Vs Penguin

    2xSuperman Vs Metallo

    2xAquaman Vs Black Manta

there is no wave 4 because TRU is full of Aquamans, Flashes, and Green Lanterns it can’t sell.

Maybe we get some movie themed minimates since the real meat and potatoes (FOOD METAPHOR!) of a license is movie tie-ins, but then we’d just pitch and moan we’d rather have comic versions of XYZ (XYZ in this case meaning ‘insert character here’ not some bizarre shorthand for Mxyzptlk*) because it’s our nature.

When Mattel controls the three biggest girl toy lines and MotU is doing just fine and they make LOTS of money off wrestling figures you can’t JUST blame Mattel for DC’s short comings. EDIT: I forgot about Hot Wheels AND CARS, they make sooo much money of those lines it’s crazy... Unless they specifically set out to let only morons run their DC line, in which case that’s just bad business so it’s probably more likely people just don’t care enough to buy “Green Hornet... or whoever” figures.

*personally I’d rather have an animated verions of Mxy then comic, but that’s just because I’m a big Gilbert Gottfried fan.

Sorry for the necro, but I disagree with your idea of the 2x packs shelfwarming. I'm sure if they were sold in TRU and had the exclusive sticker they would be bought up by every scalper in the country. Bullseye and Moonstone were what, one or two in a whole case? They were really desired back then and they're really expensive now. Even the Wonder Man/Union Jack pack is worth $30.

  3. Yes! I finally got mine. I was the one to put them on the floor from receiving. I bought both of the foot soldiers, Shredder, Kraang, and I accidentally bought Mutagen Mike before I got Kraang. I didn't remember which one was Donatello so I'll have to go back for him tomorrow.

EDIT: I'm not missing anything in my bags. I opened them in a plastic bag so I got everything.

EDIT2: Never mind I'm actually missing a kunai, but that's it.

  4. Went to my kmart and they were completely oblivious.

    Fixed that for you

They were like, " you mean the lego people?" in my head i had complete rage face going on.

Dude, Kmart has never carried Minimates before. You can't expect every employee to have complete product knowledge of every block figure they carry (which there are a lot of. K'nex, Tenkai Knights, Mega bloks, LEGO minifigures, Imaginext, C3, Superhero Squad). Every block figure is going to be a "LEGO people" figure to those who don't care about Minimates. I've worked in the toy section before and I honestly don't care about every single brand of toys that we carry. Why don't you try working retail before raging at people who work there.

This isn't just a Kmart thing. I've been to a few TRUs and sometimes the employees there have never heard of Minimates before even though they carried them for years.

  5. It's likely that many Kmarts have closed down because their lease expired. The owners of the building see how well they're doing, and raise the rent, and corporate decides to not have any of that. I have no fear of my store closing down because we own the building. And as Zach has mentioned earlier, Kmart has the most locations than any other retail outlet. It is also possible that Kmart has too many locations. Also, I wouldn't recommend going to Kmart on Black Friday or Thanksgiving because the lines reach to the back of the store. Especially electronics. Some people think that we're not busy just because THEY came in at a time when we weren't busy, but usually we have a lot of customers around 2pm and the people who claim we're not busy come in after 6pm.

  6. The non-closing Kmart I hit yesterday said to check back Tuesday; that is when they get stuff in. They said to call first when I explained I lived 75 miles away....

Then why don't you just order them online? They already added some of the new sets so it's a matter of time when they put the TMNT blindbags on there. I believe you will get free shipping too.

  7. My store has them now, but the toy department guy doesn't know when they're supposed to be stocked.

EDIT: About some of the stores closing, they're all for different reasons. The one in Oak Harbor closed down because the landlord decided to raise the rent A LOT and Kmart Corporation decided to just close down the store. The one in Marysville closed down because a giant sinkhole opened up in the parking lot. The manager there fixed it, but the landlord was unresponsive. They sued the landlord and won, but the landlord didn't want Kmart to be there anymore out of spite.

Our store in Burlington, is not closing down because our sales are good and Kmart Corporation owns the building. We still get some jerks who come in and ask when our last day is from time to time, but that's because they either don't know what's really going on or they found an article from 2009 and didn't read the date because they just discovered the internet.

  8. Is Jubilee's visor going to be translucent?

Also, I'm not sure which issue it was but I remember Cable wearing blue and yellow in Marvel vs Capcom 2. His first minimate was that costume but unfortunately he didn't have anything on his back. Hopefully we'll get an updated version with a sculpted harness.

  9. Nice! Working at Kmart is definitely better now that we'll have Minimates and I can use my employee discount. The only thing I'd complain about is that the kids who visit our store are complete trash and like to open blindbags and take the figures sometimes. And if these ever go on sale I won't be able to use my discount card :< But my discount card will work at Sears so hopefully they'll carry them. I don't think they have a toy section though.

  10. It's kinda weird that you guys didn't make ones for Donatello and Raphael, I'm used to there being four different colored minimates given away at SDCC each year, one for each day. tongue.png

We have not done that in years. In 2011, we gave out four different pirates, one per day. Nothing like that since.

Mikey and Leo were chosen because of our respective companies' key colors, orange and blue. Maybe we'll do Raph and Donny at other cons, or next year.

Opaque plastic is generally harder than translucent plastic, especially with a coat of paint on it.

Not sure we can put painted swords in sheathes right away without issues, so I am not sure that will happen without building in a lot of drying time.

Oh D:. Well I haven't collected since like 2011 so this is new to me lol. I remember there were two years that you gave away translucent minimates (2007 and 2010 I believe), then there was the year you had four different colored keychain minimates. So even though you haven't done it for three years, there is still a precedent.

Oh. D: I haven't collected anything since 2011 so this is new to me lol. I remember when you gave out four different translucent minimates in like 2008 and 2010, and then there was 2009 where you gave away four different colored shirt guys with keychains attached to them. There were also four different colored ones at Wizard World, Toy Fair, and SDCC in 2003. So there is a precedent.
