  1. Heya!

I got my tax return today and decided to finally start picking up various storylines/origin stories in the classic Marvel Universe that either I've read before (but never owned) or never read. What I'm looking for are the best storylines collected into volumes/collections. I usually lean towards older stuff (pre-90s comic book crash to be more precise) but I'm open to new stuff as well... I'm also really looking into getting some Hulk stuff that isn't Planet Hulk.

    I have the following:

    Marvel Masterworks

    The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 - 2

    Fantastic Four Vol. 1 - 2

    The Avengers Vol. 1 - 3

Silver Age Captain America Vol. 1

The Invincible Iron Man Vol. 1

    The Mighty Thor Vol. 1

    The X-Men Vol. 1

The Uncanny X-Men (Aka Giant Size X-Men) Vol. 1

    Collected Storylines

    Spider-Man: Kraven's Last Hunt

    Spider-Man: Birth of Venom

    Spider-Man: Death of the Staceys

The Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus Vol. 1

    Avengers: The Origin

Captain America: Winter Soldier Ultimate Collection

Now, this is my current to-buy list:

Thor Visionaries: Walter Simonson Vol. 1 - 2

    Iron Man: Extremis

Iron Man: Demon in a Bottle

Iron Man Epic Collection: Stark Wars (Armor Wars Prologue and Armor Wars)

    Spider-Man: Origin of the Hobgoblin

    The Avengers: Kree/Skrull War

Daredevil: The Man Without Fear - Frank Miller

    Daredevil: Born Again

    Wolverine - Claremont/Miller

Captain America: Man Out of Time

Silver Sufer Epic Collection: When Calls Galactus
(The Coming of Galactus and various Silver Surfer stories)

    X-Men: Days of Future Past

    X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills

    Infinity Gauntlet

    The Death of Captain Marvel

There are some books I would like to get but seem to be out-of-print and go for a pretty penny so, for now at least, these are out of my list until they either go back into print or are published into new, affordable collections:

    The Avengers: Under Siege

    Marvel Masterworks Daredevil Vol. 1

Marvel Masterworks The Incredible Hulk Vol. 1

Marvel Masterworks Dr. Strange Vol. 1

    The Avengers: Ultron Unlimited

So yeah, definitely looking for some good Hulk books (Perhaps Hulk Visionaries Peter David/John Byrne?) and others that aren't Spidey-related!

    Welp, dreams do come true!

    EDIT:

Sources are saying he'll make his big debut in Captain America: Civil War and that Andrew Garfield is out. Standalone film hits July 28th, 2017, pushing back the rest of the phase 3 films except for Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 & 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

  3. I read it was a passing the torch kind of deal. I think that's still the case but when I read it that was early scripts they were talking about and I know some big development happened since then so it could have changed.

There's a rumor circulating that its a complete reboot with no ties to the originals. In fact, one of the biggest rumors is that they're eyeing Bill Murray to play the Walter Peck-ish role!

Y'know, I find it odd that Sony is going with an all-female cast for this. Aren't most corporations against this sort of thing since it supposedly 'limits' the merchandising potential especially concerning toylines and video games? We already have a hard enough time getting female characters in other toylines as it is-- I mean, how long did it take for Hasbro to make a six inch-scale MCU Black Widow to be made after The Avengers came out?

Personally, I don't see this reboot doing too well and it will most likey go right into the 'oh yeah, that existed' bin with recent flunked reboots/remakes like Robocop.

I had not heard that spoiler, and that sounds amazing.

There is a school of thought that women are more than 50% of the movie-going public, and girls are 50% of the toy-buying market, and if a girl wants to buy an action figure, they should be allowed to. The reality is not always that simple, but I applaud any studio willing to attempt to translate the success of a 100% female-driven comedy like Bridesmaids into an otherwise inactive franchise. I think Sony has seen the sales potential for women's GB merchandise over the years (apparel, costumes), and has the right idea. I think a kid-targeted movie could have led to more merchandise, but it's a fine tightrope making a kid movie appeal to adults, and I'm personally glad they went this route.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm fine with a all-female cast (though I'm not a fan of some of the actresses they've chosen) and the fact they're taking a risk with it! I just found it odd Sony of all people are the ones taking said risk. tongue.png

Doesn't rule out a cartoon in the future! Maybe even with a few dudes.

A new cartoon would be fantastic and would be a good way to feature the original four characters without having to get any of the actors involved. I'm surprised Sony hasn't tried to make a CG GB series after Nick's TMNT became a major success, honestly. Imagine if Nickelodeon had a 'power-hour' with a new Ghostbusters cartoon followed by TMNT!

Was Robocop a flop? I have not seen it yet, but it looks like an admirable, reasonably faithful remake of the original. I'd say reboot, but the main elements seem to all be there.

IMO, I didn't care too much for the new movie myself (never cared for the sequels to the original, either) but it came and went out of theaters barely making $60 million on a $120 million-ish budget. (Though the worldwide gross was $240 million.) So it didn't make much of splash, at least here in the US.

  5. Just got back. I personally thought it was okay. I do think the film has some problems, however:

    - Superman didn't seem too concerned with collateral damage during the climatic battle with Zod... which seems out of character.

    - A lot of the CGI sequences were much too cluttered and made it hard to focus on the action. Not as bad as Michael Bay's stuff but man...

    - Camera work was too erratic at times. How many times did Snyder need to do that zoom in-out of focus-zoom out-in focus thing?

    - Some of the dialogue... was not so great, especially that of the military characters.

    - Pacing seemed awkward, like on Krypton at the start.

    - I think they should've cut one of the early fight scenes. As cool as it was, I think they could've left it out and the movie wouldn't have suffered.

I did like the film, though, and it makes a solid foundation for a new series. I just hope Snyder calms down at bit for the sequel. :)

And while I did complain about it, the final fight between Supes and Zod was worth the ticket price. HOLY CRAP.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this Hulk. The main reason I originally wanted this 2-pack was to get Loki (who is also great.) but Hulk ended up being amazing. Kinda sucks he didn't come with a raiser piece but I used the one from my previous Hulk so it's all good.

    post-1725-0-71167600-1360649061_thumb.jp

He goes great with the other 'classic' style guys I have on display. :D

    Oh and...

    post-1725-0-57809100-1360649314_thumb.jp

  7. Man, all the Marvel stuff looks great!

    - Loki looks great despite the reuse of movie Loki's helmet.

    - Looking forward to getting Hulk that has the newer hands. (...Why does he have a second pair of hands?)

...I find it hilarious that Hulk and Loki are in a pack together. "Puny god."

    - Definitely want the Deadpool/Punisher set. I don't have Deadpool and love the classic Punisher look.

    - ZEMO!!

    - Will be getting all of the FF stuff. I prefer the white gloves/boots to the original black and all of the accessories and villains are simply wonderful.

  8. I'm not sure if its accurate or not. I based this more off my custom Marvel Universe Red Skull, which used a movie Comic Variant Hydra soldier body and a movie Red Skull head.

I just think the colors and pieces make him a perfect counterpart to Cap and now he stand out much more in my display.

And I'll keep you in mind about the Red Skull head piece. ;)

  9. Made some new kitbashed mates after finally getting the MvsC3 Thor.

    Thor2.jpg

    Classic Thor -

Head & Arms: Disney Avengers Boxset Thor

Chest & Legs: Thor SDCC Boxset Thor

    Belt: TRU First Appearance Thor

Helmet & Cape: Marvel VS Capcom 3 Thor

    Thor1.jpg

The helmet and cape are a significant improvement over the previous capes; Thor's helmet now fits and his head can be moved around now. :D

And in honor of Avengers coming out on home video today:

    Thor3.jpg

"YOU WANT ME TO PUT THE HAMMER DOWN?!"

    ---

    RedSkull1.jpg

    Red Skull -

Head & Body: Villains Boxset Red Sjull

Gloves & Boots: Silver Age X-Men Boxset Cyclops

    Holster: Movie Captain America

    Gun: Movie Red Skull

    Armband: TRU Classic Iron Man

I added the boots and gloves to create a contrast to Captain America's own. I really need to get a new Red Skull head since this one was damaged in storage. :(

  10. It'd like to see him re-released just to see how they handled him now, but i still think the wave 2 one is pretty close to perfect.

Hmmm... How about a black blank torso with red sculpted pieces that go on the chest and arms? The arms would be a solid red and the legs/mask would be the only areas that would need tampos. The feet/crotch pieces can be blank red.

    Carnagemmidea0001.png

The torso would be a slip-on piece with small, sculpted tentacles sticking out of the back/shoulder area. The claws could be sculpted with small indents to apply black paint.

  11. So...uh...

    • Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes hasn't been cancelled as Avengers Assemble is being viewed as a continuation of that series.

    • Avengers Assemble is compared to what Brian Michael Bendis did in the comic books with the New Avengers series. The cast of the series is similar to Marvel's The Avengers in order to expand its audience after the success of the movie.

    • Footage shown featured a giant dragon attacking Manhattan as Iron Man flies the Quinjet with the team on board. Hulk pushes Thor aside and tells him, "You'll be lucky if there's anything left to smash", before jumping out of the plane. Hawkeye and Captain America are on mini jets, while Iron Man shoots missiles at the creature causing it to fall down and then get back up.

    Huh.

  12. I dunno man, the way they resolved Harry's character in Spider-Man 3 was REALLY weak and tremendously disappointing after building it up through three movies. That was just plain bad writing. I mean, using the BUTLER we've seen for one minute through all three movies to resolve everything? REALLY?

Spider-Man 3 was a lazily written, total mess of a movie with great action sequences and symbiote costume design.

  13. Started to collect these a couple of weeks ago. Started with the Catwoman set and will pick up the Joker's Funhouse set in a few weeks. I might pick up that TRU baggie for the new mask part, though...

After that I'm going through Bricklink to get the rest of the characters.

  14. Hmm. Just found this at another board about Marvel's plans with its animation division. Take it with a grain of salt, though, since I have no idea how reliable the source is:

    Regarding Ultimate Spider-Man:

    - Marvel knows how much fans hate the show. They know, that they messed up when they could have brought both kids and adults fans together, instead of focusing on the children. Regardless of what their PR BS makes it sound, the reason Ultimate Spider-man has been renewed for a second season, is that the network ordered the second season WAY before the series debut. The publicity stunt Marvel pulled by stating the show has been renewed by popular demand, is just a strategy to try and tell fans that people like this show maybe you should give it a second chance.

    - Ratings for the show are not good. He then gave me the following example: If you have 10 people watching a channel, then you introduce a new show, and instantly 200 are watching, but after 2 weeks the number goes down to 60 you still have bad ratings drop, yet its way better than the original 10 they had before the show. Agent X wants you to look at that statement carefully and you will know the “TRUE” meaning of Marvel ratings PR stunt.

    - Chances are more than high that Ultimate Spider-man will conclude after season 2. There will be some minor changes to the show during its 2013 season (a bit less in your face humor, a tiny bit more drama, and less scripts from “man of action” while more from Bendis and Dini). If by chance, the fans embrace the show in its second season it will be renewed, otherwise a new Spider-man show will replace it. Early talk about a series in the same tone as the upcoming movie reboot have been discussed, but nothing more than just that: discussion. Agent X also still urges the fans to show their disapproval of the show, since Marvel is listening, although it takes months and years for the company to answer the cries.

Hulk and the Agents of Smash:

    - Agent X wants to make sure that people understand that the HULK and the Agents of SMASH is meant for kids, much like Ultimate Spider-man. Which a mistake Marvel is now realizing, but again, way too late.

    - After Ultimate Spider-man fan backlash, Marvel is almost certain that hardcore fans are not going to enjoy this show either.

    - Unlike Ultimate Spider-man, only 26 episode have been ordered, and to not make the same mistake again, the network will wait on the ratings before ordering a second season of SMASH.

    - As mentioned before, the show premise is ACTION, ACTION, ACTION with no place for plot development. The target demographic of the show is boys ages 5-12. So again it seems a disney kids show with Marvel characters.

    Regarding Avengers Assemble:

    - According to Agent X, Avengers Assemble is the most ambitious TV animation project for marvel, ever. Unlike, Ultimate Spider-man and Hulk Agents of SMASH, the new Avengers show is taking cues from the successful Marvel Cinematic Universe, and from the thousands of angry fans comments towards the direction of Ultimate Spider-man. As a result the new show WILL NOT be in the same universe as Ultimate Spidey, nor is it in the same universe as Hulk and the Agents of SMASH.

    - While still a cartoon, Avengers Assemble will be taking itself seriously and trying to appeal to both kids and hardcore fans.

    - Marvel is spending money on Avengers Assemble than any other show, so expect high quality animation like never before.

    - Wishful talk was made to have the actors from the Avengers movie reprise their roles in the show. But due to high costs, the idea could have been scrapped. Agent X does not know what was the final decision in this matter, but he knows that whoever is voicing the characters will try to sound similar to the movie cast.

    - Falcon was chosen to be in the roster, so that fans get familiarized with the character, before his “certain” appearance in the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    - Panther and Antman will join the cast later and a possible Ms Marvel inclusion is also on the table.

    - Thanos will feature as a big villain in the show.

2 more Animated Tv projects on the work:

    - According to Agent X, 2 more, unannounced Marvel animated TV series are in different stage of production.

    - One of these series is a new X-men animated show.

    - Not much is known abt the X-men show except that it might have the same tone as Avengers Assemble.

    - Agent X either did not want to reveal the second project or did not have enough info.

    Regarding Comic con 2012:

    - Agent X informed me that Marvel is a bit worried about fans reaction to Ultimate Spider-man on their animation panel.

    - There will be undercover Marvel guys who will ask questions to the panelist, praising Ultimate Spider-man, and pretending to be hardcore fans who “supposedly” enjoy the show. While Agent X hates the sneaky plan, he tells me this is very common with almost all companies.

    - A full episode of Ultimate Spider-man will be shown at the panel. According to him, it is either a Bendis written episode (Bendis episodes are supposedly good ones) or the a major villain reveal episode (either Green Goblin or Doc Octopus)

    - Marvel hopes to show a full episode of Hulk and the Agents of SMASH. If the first episode has not been completed by July, a short 5min clip showing the SMASH agents in action will be shown instead.

    - More info regarding Avengers Assemble will be revealed at the Panel, along with character designs, and maybe some test footage(if ready by then).

    - Excpect a lot of praise from Jeph Loeb towards ultimate spider-man, and a claim that hardcore marvel fans love it, which of course is BS

    Misc:

    - Talks of an Avengers vs X-men adaptation is on the table. Agent X does not know if it will be a DTV movie or a crossover between the 2 upcoming tv series of Avengers Assemble and X-men.

    - AgentX mentions that Marvel is moving along with new direct to video animated features. More on that in few month, he promises.

    - AgentX asks the fans to be patient and to remember that Marvel is a company that listens to the fans. They might have messed up, big time he adds, with Ultimate Spider-man and Hulk agents of SMASH, but the company is learning, and avengers Assemble and the new X-men animated series will prove that. He also mentions the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how awesome it is now after few missteps in the beginning, and asks to have faith in the company, which is really aiming at beating DC animation in both series and DTV’s

    - Marvel was so shocked and in awe at the huge number of complaints the company received for Ultimate Spider-man. The company started censoring their social pages (twitter, facebook) to block users from hating on the show, and therefore spreading the hate online.

With all that said, AgentX still asks the fans to voice their love, hate, or criticism towards the Marvel shows, via social media(twitter, facebook, forums, etc). The company does listen and the hate towards ultimate Spider-man is really helping change the upcoming projects and making Avengers Assemble a great show.

    Hmmmm.

  15. Got 'em! They had done a reset at the local TRU where they replaced the Avengers display with an Amazing Spider-Man one. I figured they moved the mates around so I looked at the collectibles aisle... and almost missed 'em: A single, full peg of Wave 13 mates next to the Avengers/MvsC3 peg!

Picked up the Spidey/Punisher and DD/Kingpin two-packs as I have no interest in the other characters.

Surprisingly, Spider-Man might be my favorite mate of the bunch. The colors are a perfect red and blue! No more dark red or baby blue...
